rVyi) S!fAI EVANSVIULtf. IHD. TUESDAY MORNING.. .NOVEMBER 29 READISG MATTER ON PAGE. KVEItY Newi Summary. A fepeciat dispatch to the New York Tribune, states that the President occupied most of the 23d instant, in the preparation of his message. While playing the amanuensis to some senatorial brains, he holds no public reception, and declines private visits. In other words, while his keepers are getting up a genuine "Buchanan's message," the President " lies low and keeps quiet." "Occasional," writing to the Press, in regard to a proposed meeting of editors from all the States, at Washington, during the next session of Congress, sajs that it would be " a congregation, interesting in every respect." A thousand editors brought together to nominate a President, would completely overthrow all the President making politicians and aspirants -" that depend so entirely Upon the numerous pens of these same editors. But too many, even, of these manufacturers of great men are the dependents of their own creations." The London Timet makes some sharp comments on the Harper's Ferry insurrection, and says, " We cannot therefore be surprised to see such reasoners reminded, from time to time, by warnings like that afforded by the Harper's Ferry insurrection, how insecure is the basis on which the slave owner builds, and how dangerous it is for a nation which carries so. venomous a serpent in her bosom, to be forever trifling with the possibility of a foreign wart the first effect of which must almost necessarily be to rouse the sleeping destroyer into life and activity. An auction sale on the Cth of December, of the various articles that have accumulated in the Dead Letter Office during the last twelve years, is announced as one of the novelties of the season at Washington. The list would stock an extensive variety store. It is said that at the opening of Congress, a call will be made for a statement of all contracts, jobs, and employment given to citizens of Pennsylvania by the pressnt Administration, with the names of the beneficiaries; also, all extra allowances made on contracts of every kind, and especially claims refused by paymasters. Some interesting disclosures are expected. The Xenia Ifeies says that a negro named W. D. Manly, stabbed John Curry, a white man, in an affray, which occurred at the house of Bob Davis. The quarrel arose out of a discussion relative to the merits, of a dinner. The wound is considered a dangerous one, and Manly is iu. jul awaiting his trial. The Ilicbmond Broad Axe says that a young man, named Henry Smith, residing near Dovjur, iu that county, was killed by falling from a tree twenty feet to the ground. He was in the act of climbing after a wounded squirrel. Gov. Wise appears to be suffering more from the defence of his friends than from any other source. Their attempts to vindicate bis course in calling out troops, only renders the whole affair more absurd. There - is nothing to warrant such a step, or any force whatever. The Marshall county Republican says that Mr. Lorenzo Dow Parks was drowned in Muckshaw Lake, while shooting ducks. The body was .'ecovered, and all efforts made to resuscitate him were unavailing. Mr. Parks leases a wife and two children. The Republicans of New York have nominated George Opdyke for Mayor, ne was a Barn-burner in 1848, but never rejoined the Democratic party after that campaign. Capt. French, recently eortnected with Major Bowman's Bureau of Construction at the Treasury Department, but dismissed for the disordered condition of his accounts, i3 believed to be involved in a heavy defalcation. His accounts will undergo a rigid examination. Ogle Taylor is his surety. It seems that French's expendituaes far exceeded his pay. ' . Mr. Preston, our Minister to Spain, has a six months furlough from duty, which for ' private State reasons," will probably be indefinitely postponed. Dispatches from Mr. Dimitry announces things unchanged in Costa Rica. He was well received by the Government and the people. Justice Daniels of the Supreme Court, is lying at the point of death. No one is adadmitted to see him. Mr. Sartiges is expected to resume the French Mission at Washington, having failed to obtain an European transfer. Hon. Charles Sumner arrived home in the steamer Canada. His health and mental ..T5A0-r.-salll"nOT1Tf1eas Court will resume its sittings this' morning, Judge Moons presiding. ' E& We can look upon no paper "as a zealous co-laborer in the cause of Democracy " that advises the party to cling to a particular person " first, last, and all the time." Such Democracy is too new fangled to suit us, and we know it is not the position of Mr. Douglas himself, who has always advised his friends to go for the nominee of the convention. It is deplorable that prominent editors should sink principles in their advocacy of men. Perhaps they are more to be pitied than blamed for this, as two ideas cannot be entertained at the same time in their diminutive brain pans. The man the most available to carry out the principles of the party will receive the nomination, and him will we support "first, last, and all the time." Enquirer. :, - piThe Douglas men ir Pennsylvania, headei by John W. Forney, have invariably boUed the regular nominations, and either run candidates in opposition to the administration nominees, or supported Republicans. The support of the Douglas men gave Judge Reed his immense majority two years o- f j ago. It is well known that Col. Forney's

I p!atform73Ir. Buchanan and Joe Lane another. Which is right? Which side does the Enquirer take? It is the "principle, not tbe men "that is-to be-considered. The' Republicans charged uponfthe Democracy in 1856 -that' the. Cincinnati platform was a two-faced , concern ; that it was understood to mean one thing North, and quite a different thing South. 1 his .was denied vehemently by that party, who maintained that it was strictly national. At the first meeting of Congress under Mr. Buchanan, it turned oat that there were different opinions as to what was the meaning of the platform. Mr.' Douglas construed it one way, and Mr. Buchanan, Jefferson Da vis, and others regarding it in quite a different light. The qnestion is, Mr. Enquirer, which of the leaders have the correct position, in your opinion ? That is the point the people are anxious about. They are not so particular about Mr. Douglas' nomination, except as 'it would be an acknowledgement that the construction he has given to the Cincinnati platform, is the construction adopted by the Democratic j Prt7- 9 j Local and Miscellaneons. Furthir Fartlcalari. The melanchely affair of Saturday evening, which ushered Mr. Lcxkenheimeu unbidden into the presence of the Judge of the quick and dead, and adds to our annal3 the sad story of another suicide, was the all absorbing topic of yesterday. Hundreds gathered around the spot where the deed was committed, prompted for the most part by a morbid curiosity to obtain even a bare glimpse of something connected with, the last of this unfortunate man. What could have, been the motive tibat prompted the deed, must remain ever his own secret. That ho was perfectly rational at the time, must be inferred from his acta immediately previous, although he had been for some days sadly under the influence of liquor. Mr. L. left the Sixt Hotel, where he boarded, between 8 and 9 o'clock, in the evening, having intimated to the proprietor bis intention to destroy himself. Proceeding up Locust street towards his room, he was met by his brother, who tried to persuade him to return to his hotel, which he refused to do, and went directly to bis room. Apprehending home violence, his brother, Mr. Frederick! Lukkcnheimeb, and Mr. Sixt, followed, but on arriving at the room. found it dark and supposed that the deceased bad gone some place else. Mr. Xn however, had gone into the back yard to borrow a hatchet. Mr. Garvin, who met him there, observed nothing unusual in his behavior or appe.trance, only he thought it a little strange on being informed by deceased that he could not get his gas '.o burn, as he, (Mr. G,) had no difficulty with bis, which is supplied from the same pipes; aud supposed that the object iu procuring the hatchet was with reference to this fact Shortly afterwards a noise was heard in Mr. Lurikenheimer's room, as if some one was cutting or pounding, and in a few moments followed the report of a pistol. When his brother and Mrs. Sixt entered the room, deceased was lying on ' his lounge, suffering terrible agony ; his groans attracted a number of persons, but the fatal -ball had done iU work.' ' It appeared that his pistol being locked up iu his bureau drawer, and the key misplaced, deceased had procured the hatch et to force the drawer and obtain 'the weap on. Having succeeded, he evidently - took his seat on the lounge and deliberately fifed the ball ' through his forehead, a shorty dis tance above and between the eyebrows. The unfortunate man thus mangled, ling' ered for two hours of the most dreadful rjrony, and about H o'clock, ceased to breaUae, being entirely insensible from the time of the commission of the act. - He was burriied on Sunday afternoon from his room. U large number of his friends and acquaint; idces accompanied the remains to their lust resting place in Oak Hill cemetery. - Drowsed. The body of John Rows, wLo was drowned in the canal - basin over a week ago, was recovered on Sunday, taud the coroner's jury returned a t verdict of accidental drowning. : , John Whisky is still at work. , . Rows was an intemperate man, and was the curse of a wife and five children. Something over a week ago, he left his home with a sack, to get some meal, and was seen no more until his body was fished up from the bottom of the'Canal, by some men who were dragging for him. Jhe njt'j he was drowned in the canal, and on Sunday morning the sack ; he had with him when he left home was found floating ia the basin. When this was recognized by " her, she requested a search, which resulted in the recovery of his body as above. In his pockets were found a pocket-knife fifteen cents, a great wad of tobacco, and the ' explanation of the accident a flask, half filled with whisky, so well corked as to exclude the water. An occasional report of the mortality of the city and vicinity, with the causes remote or direct of each death, would disclose , a fact of which a certain class of dealers might feel proud of, perhaps. The statistics of crime would still enhance the interest of the information to these persons, whose traffic is worse than the infernal machine, and whose, advertisements might with propriety be displayed with the cut of a gibbet, a prison,' or the grave of the inebriate and the suicide. . Market baskets were looking down, with but few purchasers. Tallow, brisk. Johs's depot was a cemfield near the toll gate, on- the plank road, though to avoid annoyance of customers who might wish to examine his goods, without purchasing, he gave it out that his stock was nine miles in the country. : Jons drove a brisk business, but his large profits, at such low prices, excited the envy of dealers whose goods cost them store than John's selling mark, and our peripatetic vendor was made an object of persecution. ' Articles were found in his possession' which he hadn't paid for, (for Jons had a credit system of "his own ; he obtained his ; goods on time, but sold for cash, on . the principle of quick sales and small profits. John's title to much of his stock was considered imperfect, atd to crown all, this practical exponent of the erdeit mobUier was thrown into jail to await the next-term of court, and his prop erty confiscated. The venerable scamp de nies having any accomplices, and if this is true he is remarkably ubiquitous, besides being a judge of good living. i S& The wind on Saturday evening upset Mr. Elliott's show case, damaging it considerably, so that for ri few days he will not be able to have the usual display at the door, but whoever will take the trouble to walk up stairs, will find the finest gallery of pictures that is to be found in the Western country, and all who want No. 1 pictures would do well to call at the City Gallery, 45 Main street. Mr. E. has on the finer qualities of cases reduced his prices nearly one-half. More goods have come to auction. II. Nelson & Co. have just received an addition of ten cases of dry goods to their large stock already on hanti, and will resume the auction sales to-day at 10 o'clock. The ladies are invited at the afternoon sales, at 2 o'clock. The entire lot, old and new, is bound to be sold. MARRIED. On Sunday, 27th inst., by Uie lie v. Mr. Gillelt, Ha. John L.
