EVANSVILLE, IHO.
WEDNESDAY MORNING .....NOVEMBER 23 ======= From Kansas. Mr. A. Johnson, of Boonville, called on us yesterday, on his return home from Kansas. He informs us that business in that Territory is brightening up considerably, and the people are quite animated and energetic. St. Joseph, Mo., seems inspired with new life; buildings of every description are being erected, and improvements of all kinds making rapid advancement. A new hotel has just been completed in that city, at a cost of $150,000, and another, which will cost, when finished, from $r0,000 to $75,000, is almost ready for occupation. The hotel enterprise of the citizens of that city, whose population is about equal to that of our own, should shame us to energetic action in the building of one that would be a credit to our city. While in Leavenworth city, Mr. Johnson met with a Col. Ford, formerly of Kickapoo, who had just returned from the Pike's Peak gold regions. He brought with him a variety of specimens of gold dust and silver ore, the sight of which greatly excited public attention, and will, no doubt, induce a greater emigration to the mines than ever in the Spring. Col. Ford, himself, intends returning, and taking with him machinery for breaking the rock in which a greet [sic] deal of the precious metal is enclosed. The gold excitement will speedily build up a new and populous State in the Pike's Peak region, and we may soon look for a broad belt of civilization extending across the entire continent. The discovery of gold in those "Western wilds" will occasion their settlement years in advance of the ordinary march of improvement. The railroad from St. Joseph to Atchison was nearly completed when Mr. Johnson left the Territory, and he thinks the cars will be running between those points in three or four weeks at farthest. The opening of this road has given a new impetus to business in both of those cities and will, by its influence, add largely to their population. ———<>——— ——>The <Enquirer>, of Monday afternoon, .. devotes a column and a half to what it terms a " chastisement" of Mr. Bates. It is - evident, however, that the gentleman from Missouri is but used as a scapvgoat for auother offender, who is lashed as unmercifully as the author's ability permits him to lay it on at least in the covert manner chosen. The main object of the assault on Mr. Bates ia contained, we think, in the following . paragraph, seemingly incident! thrown into the articie: Unanimity is the very soul of action. " Weak points must be strengthened with care and without delay. All the outposts most be strictly guarded, and trusty sentinels posted on tbe watch towers, who shall watch with jealous care the movements of the enemy j In tbe meantime, the choice of a standard-bearer is of the first importance. Shall choose a disorganizer as such ? The more bold and dexterous the incendiary, the more he is to be dreaded. A counterfeit of exquisite execution, though eminently qualified to deceive, is, nevertheless, a counterfeit. - t .. - , ; The italicised sentence is the Enquirer'sNow, we are curious to know who it is that is destroying the unanimity of the Demo cratic oartv ? Who is it aspiring to be a "standard-bearer that is a " disorganize 1 "' - Is it Mr. Buchanan, or is i. Mr, Douglas ? A little explicitness on this point would be . , very s accptable f People generally regard ' .Toshua Giddings as more implicated iu the Harper's Ferry difficulty ' from what old Brown refuted to say concerning him, than -for what be made known, So wis would say to the editor, a worse construction may he ; placed upon ' your italicised line than you really Intended. Having "chastised" Mr. Botes, do let us' know it' there are any aspi-ing disorganize!- in the Democratic ranks, and who they are, that we may help point the fingeof condemnation at them. i t Chinese Tbeatt. A correspondent of - the New York Tribune writing from Can . ton, says it is rumored in that city no great advafttfege will accrue to our government . . from, tbe ratification of the treaty taken out .by Minister Ward, after all. Tbe stipula tions of the treaty are few, and it seems all hope of prospective' advantages to'be""dc- ' rived from it are based upon a clause securing the privileges accorded to the most fa. vored nation.' This is likely to prove a barren advantage, inasmuch" as the most . favored nations " are not enjoying the rights ,. desired by our merchants, who are informed by the wary children of the 6un, that they may alia re ia the privileges granted to the " favored nations " so soon as they enter upon their enjoyment. The consequence is, ' the new -ports remain closed as before,; and it is plain to be seen we will have to wait t until these ports are forced opeu by the united power Of .trance ad England. 1 John Chinaman has evidently outwitted brother Jonathan in tbe formation of this treaty. . A - . . ., : i. . fca?" The Paducah Herald objects to the prognostications of the Cincinnati Enquirer in reference to the chances of their respective favorites for the nomination at Charleston. The Enquirer says the New England States will be a unit for Mr Douglas. The Herald eays that this is a great mistake. That Maine is decidedly for Mr. Guthrie, so, also, i& New Hampshire ; and, it is as sured, that after the first ballot, Massac ha setts will likewise cast her vote for him. S John ' D. Defrees, the Editor of the Allot, left Indianapolis for Washington City Monday. Mr. Defrees is a prominent candidate for the Congressional printing, and, it is said, with good hopes of success. ———<>——— ——>Allen. A. Hall, editor of the <News>, killed G. G. Poindexter, editor of the <Union and American>, in a street rencontre, at Nashville, on the 18th. The cause of the shooting was an editorial quarrel.
The Lecture Course.
The Lecture Committee of th Library Ass3tiatiott announce, in this morning's issue, the cours'j ot Lectures which iliey pur pose to give our citizens during tbe season,? Wetongretuiate our readers with the prospect, they present us of an entertaining and instructive series of lectures. We are very certain, it is the best course that the Library Association has given, and we believe it is not excelled trynyonxsrnrierture3r . . - t - this season, in anu Wele.rb. rtlti. The names J Of the lecturers, alone, is a sure index of lb Instruction and pleasure they w CI afford us. The -eotrnuittee are', fortunate in being able to open the course" with a gentleman whose name, forj many ijearsy has been so widely and favorably known, as that of ExSenator Foote, of Mississippi, There are few,; if any, men in jtheWestor Soutti, who ought to draw, larger, audience, -f All who remember his noble and patriotic services in the Senate, as the . co-laborer and. compeer Of Henry CUy, will desire to hear his ideal of " The Patriot President." J - J James A. McMasters, Esq., is well known over the country, especially by the members of the Catholic Church, as the able editor of the Freeman 9 Journal,- one of the leading organs of that church. He lectures on Christopher Columbus, a subjectof universal interest. We .see in notices -of it in eastern papers, that he has some new and interesting views in relation to the ' great navigator. He is said to be an' attractive speaker. , . . ... , tj t . , . .-, We understand that Mr. Owen, late minister of the United States to Naples, has kindly consented to deliver a lecture for tbe Association. It will probably be on tbe subject of Italy and its people. But his fellow-citizens of Evansville, will be glad to hear him on any topic". 4 ' " Every one who was fortunate enough last season to hear Prof. Youman's lectures on " the chemistry of the sun-beam," will not fail this season to hear his lecture on the masquerade of the elements," it can not be otherwise than tery attractive. ) Prof. Youmans' is one of the most instructive lecturers in the country. His lecture will be one of tbe most attractive of the whole course. " But with most of the lecture-goingpub-lic, Bayard Taylor will be the great attraction of the course. He is very popular all over the country, and in no city more so than here. His lecture on "Moscow" is said to one of his best. , t What historical subject could be more interesting thau the thrilling life of the famous heroine, " Joanof Are," especially in the hands of so fine a lecturer as E. P. Whipple, of Boston, well known as one of the first critics and writers in America ? The names and literary characters of Emerson and Headly are well known to our readers. The committee do not announce their subjects, but whatever they may be, the lecturers cannot fail lo make them attractive. We know our readers will agree with us when we say this course well deserves their liberal support. The Association have yielded to the general demand for first class lecturers, and in doing so, they, have incurred obligations which can only be discharged by a large sale of season tickets. They have placed tbe tickets at a low price so as to bring them within the reach of all.' No one is too poor to own a season ticket. Of course our professional and business men will all take an interest in the ' matter. And we hope tbe industrial classes, tho manufacturers, the mechanics,' and the laboring men will show their appreciation of these lecturers. In . what , more profitable and interesting way, cau they spend' a long wirier evening? All intelligent and public sprited citizens should take a deep interest in such lectnres as those presented by the Library At&ociatiou. They have a great tendency towards elevating the taste, intel ligence, and general character of tbe people. Numerous statements, having gone the rounds of tbe press to the effect that great indignation , was, felt at Charlestown, Ya.,! against all strangers and that even the Jives of . the. counsel, of the. prisoneTJc were endangered, Mr; Ken not t has seen proper to publish the following letter, in justice to tho citizens of Charlestown : ,'. ,. ' Some one, apparently moved ' by ' spite againsC the people of Charle-stown, Va., is circulating a report that t'jey advised Capt. Brown's t-onnsH to -teare the place. "Now, if I had no gratitude for real services res dered tome durinir the late exciOov - trialiuJ . o ' common nonesty wouia impel me to contradict that report, because I know it ia-'nat true. The facts are these : The people of Jefferson county are very much excited, and for the best of reasons. Three large fires, the last one cousnminir over twelve hundred bushels of wheat, hi occurred up to last Saturday morningi U aider these circumstances a meeting was held and a very carefully-worded proclamation! was drawn up and published by Mr. Green, the major, warning strangers giving no satisfactory account of themselves to leave the place. As I bad important . and.- wellunderstood business in the place and ceroid have given a satisfactcJry account even if I had been on a visit of mere curiosity,' ! ielt sure it did not concern me, particularly as no steps had been taken to call my attention to it. Other straugers, however, who could have accounted for themselves as well as I. thought it applied to them, and very unad visedly, as I think, addressed a Col. Davis, himself a stranger in the plaoe, I believe, asking him what he thought of, it. I bap pened to be in the room when he. entered. I listened to the speeches on both sides iu great tranquility of mind, and was preparing to leave the gentlemen to themselyes, with the remark that it did not concern me at all, when Col. Davis .remarked that he did sot know that he ooold answer for my personal safety if I staid. To this I replied, very civilly, however, that my personal safety was my personal , business, not his, and tliat I should not leave until I was quite ready. The conversation dropped there, and I remainedand I could have remained until now if I desired it. It should be borne in mind that Col. Davis did not volunteer his opinion, or intimate anything until he was asked to do so, and then it was merely kis opinion, privately expressed. How it got into the papers I do not know, but I am confident he
be held responsible tor it. And, though mischief was often threatened by ' sotne ill-conditioned 'people,'Of wEbnT Charlestown bas its share; and from whom I believe New York and Philadelphia areS not altogether free, I will add ; that some ot , . . .:,: .u tfr,. t,m4 at Harper's Ferry, had sternly put down the -Vrf-!T't:,ir . - riX - i.,r - rage snouia oe aone w, us er any straugersi but oyer their own dead'-bodies. Mr. STXRRmV'iri answer to the soJ licitation we published yesterday morning, has consented to repeat " Flora's Festival,", on to-morrow evening.: The proceeds of the concert, as in the former, are to be applied for the benefit of the Mission Sabbath School. The admittance fee ha3 been re duced to 25 cents, and. we shall lock for a crowded house on the occasion. We ought to take great pride in the cultivation of home talent, and avail ourselves of every opportunity to witness the . improvements being made by. our people in the divine art of singing. The concert is to take place in Crescent City Hall. t)5if To-morrow is Thanksgiving day, and we j resume many of tbe business bouses will be closed; but Mr. Elliott informs us that his City Gallery will be open for visi- . ... . . . anH of rnnrai! mnnr will Pnihrcp this tore, and of course many will emorace iniS opportunity of paying him a visit, and viewing the improvements of art, as manifested in the beautiful new specimens that adorn his gallery, and all who do so, will feel a new desire to give thanks that our city possesses such an institution as City Gallery, 45 Main' street. BF. Thyssens has opened a studio in. the room known as the " Sun-beam Gallery," where he will take pleasure in exhibiting specimens of his-', paintings. He desires to' forma class ia the art of painting, which he will teach on liberal terms. He may hq found in his studio from 9 o'clock A. to 5 P.M. Enquirer cop y. 23-2w. ' Bgi. Notice is hereby gven to the Stockholders of tbe Evansville Library Association, that the fifth call on stock and annual contributions are now part doe, and that J. F. Ceisp, Esq, Librarian, is authorized by the Board of Directors to receive said dues and receipt for the same, in the name of the Treasurer. A. Lemcke, Treasurer Library Association. tku? Some people are uuder the impression that the stock of shoes in this market is light, but we are , happy to inform them that this is not the fact, and it is not likely to be so during the season. Hughes assures his friends and the public generally, that he has an excellent supply of as good shoes as can be procured in this market. Cay The Ball Club proposes having a game of ballon Thursday afternoon, at their usual play ground, near the old grave yard. A cordial invitation is extended to all who can swing a " bat " or catch a ball, to be on hand and take a part in the sport.
