WEDNESDAY MORNING.. ...OCTOBER 2 RIVER ITEMS. ABMVED. Dacetah, Cincinnati Oonewago, (Ncinn,ll Mart urn Potnam, do Hottie Gil more, io J A Dune, Cairo ' ' " Charley Boweti, Cairo " DCriBTCB. Dacotah, NO ' Hottie Gllmore, down Martha Putnam, St L'a Charley Bowen, Cairo Cone w ago, Naaavilla ' The river at this point continues to ' recede gradually, and is becoming very troublesome- so much so that we cannot j keep track of-our regular packets. There are numerous boats aground both above aud below this place. At Scuffletown there is only, three feet scant. From here out to Cairo there is only four feet scant on the - bars. - Freights are plenty, and have adTanced considerably. The following are the ruling figures : To New Orleans Apploe, e0.$ bbl ; Tcbacco, $5 hhd; flour, SUc V bbl ; pound freights, 35o V 100 tt;I(rgs and Whisky ,90al00 bbl. To St. Louis Pound freights, 20e V 100 lbs. To Cincinnai i Pound freighta (heavy). 15o V 100 lbs; ahipstuff and wheat, sack, 15o. QSe? We are. under obligations to our clever friend James . Patterson, at Wheeler & Riggs,' for favors received. STh5 superb steamer J. H. Done, Capt. Lew Davis, and Clerk List, leaves this day for Cairo. She is a good boat to travel or ship on, and is always punctual to the hour. This boat is peculiarly adapted to carrying stock as she has wide guards and every accommodation that shippers could wish. Those having stock to ship should not miss this opportunity. t&" The Charley Bowtn, having been detained by fog and not by ascertaining the dimensions of the sand, as the Enquirer intimates, arrived here last night, with a good trip. There is no fear of sand while oar friend Weed is at the wheel. This splendid packet takes her departure this morning, at 11 o'clock, and is prepared to take freight and passengers, delivenng them on railroad time. Tis useless to say more, as the Charley always speaks for herself. Th Silver Star will take her departure -at noon to-day (provided she arrives), for Paducah. ' The fog for the last two nights may keep her back. She is a good boat, and passengers for Paducah. and way places will be taken care of in good style. That worthy clerk, Gus. Dusouchet, is at the desk, t& Mr. James Stewart, engineer of the ferry boat Manchester, started to cross the river from Bird's Point to Cairo, Thursday night, in a skiff, accompanied by three Irishmen, since which time nothing has been seen of him, the skiff or the wen. It is feared that the boat swamped in crossing, or that he has been foully dealt with. frThenew Cincinnati and Mavsville side-wheel packet Magnolia, made a trip on Saturday evening, performing highly satisfactorily. 7 he hull is 200 feet in k-ugth, 31 feet floor, with 5 depth of bold. The machinery consists of threo five flue boilers, 4G inches in diameter, 24 feet long, with a pair of 22 inch cylinders, G feet stroke. JS?- The Pacific, R. J. Ward, and Diana are lying at Shippingsport. As soon tis there is sufficiency of water, they will resume their places in the New Orleans trade. gayCapt. Stewart, late of the Messenger, is building a tittle cotton freighter at Cincinnati, for the upper Red river trade. She is to be ready for business by the 25tb of next November. , R5yThe Lue Eavet left yesterday: with a fine trip. We are glad to see her doing well. We wish her prosperity and a long life. ' ' J Local and Miscellaneous. Ham moth Potatoiss. There was gathered off from about one third of an acre of cround, part of the farm of William A. Cfariswell, in Warrick County, 70 bushels of potatoes.- Some of the potatoes measured nine inches in length and 1 2 J inches in circumference and weighed 1 poumls each. We eall that doing pretty well for th pocket. : SgjfThe Chess club have added largely to their numbers and Interest. The room is generally well filled with lovers of the Royal game, who spend an evening more pleasantly in witnessing these mimic encounters of Kings anS Queens than they possibly could otherwise.-- v- , - - OYSTKftf..- Few persons are exempt from an appetite for oysters. Where to get the Jbesi article and on the cheapest terms, is information always favorably received. Jacob Schkiblb, corner of Second and Main streets. is the place to procure the freshest oysters of Uie Fair Haven, Norfolk, Va., brand, and he sells them cheaper, he informs us, than they can be purchased any where else. He invites a call. ' tfj-Ei-Govemor Joues died at Memphis, Tennessee, on Saturday, the 29th ult. He as a prominent politician, and his death will be mourned by many friends. The- late great fire in New Orleans destroyed about $400,000 worth of property. The new market bnildingand about one hundred residences and stores were burned. The Delia says it is the most destructive fire Binee 1834.' The New York Herald Bays that Bishop Onderdonk, having failed to secure his restoration to' his office by the House of Bishops, has resolved to sue them for damages for the pecuniary loss he has sustained in being bo long cut out of his salary. This will be a straige lawsuit certainly. iW question very much if the reverend gentleman win fare any better in the civil than, he did in the ecclesiastical court. OCBAN StEAMIHOOn HtJSDRBD MlLES AH Hour. A letter is published in the Buffalo papers, signed by Ex-President Millard Fill'f more, Hon. S. G. Havens and a number of .J, influential citizens, addressed to Rollin ermain, requesting htm to make a public explanation of bis principles of construction for steam navigation. He proposes to esA ' tabluh, amengst other, the following propiocsitions: . That steamers may be constructed to run one hundred miles an hour, and so strong that the greatest ocean forces would ' not endanger their safety ; that the economy lof their movements will be such as to reduce the cost of transportation to less' than one fifth of the present rates; that when loaded with a large freight a full passenger "'list, and fuel enough for a voyage around , ' the world, it would not draw over twentytwo feet ; and that as a war ship one would toe an over-match to all existing navies. ' ' Mr. Germain has made the subject his study for thirteen years, ani now makes it public " lor the first time. Eminent engineers of ' the United States pronounce the plan practicable, and destined to work a complete resolution in steam navigation.

X tat W. Lr. Charlestown, Nov. 1 u The arguments in the case of John Brown, being concluded, - Mr. Chilton aiked the Judge to instruct the jury that, -if they lieIiuve the prisoner was not . a citizen of Virginia, they cannot convict hitn on account of treason, saying that the constitution did not give rights and ' immunities aloncy but also responsibilities. Mr. Chilton also asked another, to the effect that the jury must be satisfied as to the place where the offence was committed, whether within the boundaries of Jetfereoo county, which the court granted. .: . t .. . A recess of half an hour ' was taken, when the jury came in with their verdict. An intense -excitement prevailed .in the court room. Brown sat up in his bed while the verdict was reudered. , ' ' , . The jury find him guilty of treason, advising and conspiring with slaves and others to rebel, and of murder in the first degree. Brown lay down quietly and .said nothing and there was no demonstration of any kind. . Mr. Chilton moved an arrest of judgement, both on account of errors in the indictment and errors in the verdict. - The objection in regard to the indictment has been already stated. The prisoner has been tried for an offence not appearing on the record of the grand jury. ' The verdict was not on each count, separately, bnt a general verdict on the whole indictmeut, the prisoner has also been , found guilty of both counts, for murder of the same persons. It was manifest that he could not be guilty of both. . By . agreement the points will be argued to-morrow morning. . Brawn was remanded to jail. Mr. Harding announced that he was ready to proceed with the trial of Coppe, who was brought in, the ceremony of passing through a file of armed men being dispensed with." ' : ' Coppe took a seat between Griswold and Hoyt, who appeared as his counsel.. He appeared calm and composed. ; - The remainder of the : day was spent in eudeavoring to obtain a jury. The pannel was not complete when at 5 o'clock the court adjourned. ."',' . J. ;. . ' '. Washington, Nov. 1 at. A pamphlet by Rev. Johnson, is about to be published, entitled, " Remarks on Popular Sovereignty j, as , maintained -and denied respectively, by Judge' Douglas and Mr. Black." He establishes the following propositions: 1st, That Congress. has no power to prohibit slavery in the unorganized Territories. 2d, That Congress has no power to prohibit slavery in the Territories after tbey have been organized under Territorial government.- 3d, That Congress, has no power to estabiish slavery in a Territory. Slavery is the creature of positive law, which may exist either by statute or custom. 'i'4. That if Congress can neither prohibit nor establish slavery in a Territory, it cannot legislate to protect .or regulate it. 5, Territorial governments can admit, protect, or exclude slavery at any time during its existence. " J ' ;. 5th. Territorial, governments can admit, protect, or exclude slavery, at any time during its existence. In conclusion, he submits that the doctrine of popular sovereignty, maintained from first to last by -Judge Douglas, and now so assailed by the Attorney Geueral, has borne the clearest and most explicit sanction of Congress, the Cincinnati Convention and , President "Pierce, and, above all, of President Buchanan, and it is with equal conviction of its truth that he asserts that without the belief in the sin cerity of such sanction, and especially the last, President Buchanan would now be enjoying the quiet and leisure of Wheatland, gratified only by remembering the services rendered his country, at home and abroad, in other public but, perhaps, in his estima tion subordinate and less desirable stations than the one in which he now, as his friends assert, fiirures so conspicuously aud hono rably before the world, as well as the nation, , i Nbw York,. Nov. 1 m. . A Washington dispatch says: "I have it on the , most , reliable authority that the death penalty will not be . immediately indicted on Drown. : He may be sentenced to die on the gallows in two or three days,' be cause the Ordinary delay of 30 d:ys between sentence and execution does not apply in the case of one convicted of inciting slaves to insurrection, but Gov. Wise admires Brown's indomitable pluck, and for that and because he wishes to show how magnanimous Vir ginia can be, he will probably respite the execution for at least 30 days. I should not be surprised from what I learn, if an order should be made directing Brown' to be sent to Richmond, to be kept in the Penitentiary there till such time as the Governor fixes for bis execution. ; o- - ' A Massachusetts lady,. whose name I un derstand to be Childs, has written to Gov Wise requesting permission to wait upou and nurse the unfortunate old man.
