EVAWSVI1.LE.IND. WEDNESDAY MORNING OCTOBER 2 Horace Greeley is out iu a card in reply to the revelations made by one H. Forbes, which were published in the New York. Herald. Mr. Greeley admits that he did give said Forbes $20, to aid him to go to Xansas to assist the free State men in their difficulties. He says, also, that other l.rtiea contributed means, and that probata,, -be w Hole amount raised for Col. Forbes equalled $700. Forbes departed West for the purpose of drilling the free State recruits, was gone some five or sir months, and returned to New York to raise more money. Greeley, considering that he had already invested about as much in the Colonel as was profitable, declined to take any more stock. The white-coated philosopher says he has yet to learn what the Colonel did in Kansas to aid the free State cause. He closes bis card with the following advice to the Fifth Avenue Hotel Committee, who made a sweeping charge against certain Republican Senators, as being implicated in the Harper's Ferry difficulty : I close with a single word of advice to the Fifth Avenue Hotel Committee and the pro-slavery party generally, viz : In your dealing with Col. Forbes, bo sure you have a plain contract, put down in clear black and white. Even thus, you will probably find that he costs more than he comes to ; in any other case, you certainly will. ' The Common Council of Indianapo lis, after a warm debate, passed an order to purchase a steam fire engine from Lee & Larned, of New York city. The engine is to be similar to the one exhibited in that city a few weeks ago, but of heavier and more durable construction. The price is $4,600, payable in bonds maturing in two years, bearing 6 per cent, interest. There was quite a rivalry between the friends of this engine and those of Mr. Latta's. The insurance company in the city that will give the largest amount of money, not less than five hundred dollars, is to have the privilege of naming the engine. Bonds are also to be issuid for the purchase of horses, hose, etc. The Council also advertise the hand engines, hose ,hose reels, for sale. They evidently, intend to make a revolution in the fire department. Should our Council intend to purchase another hand engine, there is one at Indianapolis that is abundantly worth what is likely will be asked for iU We think the Franklin Company ought to inquire after it. It may be worth their while. Tbikves. The Olney, 111., Timet says that town has, for some time, been infested with thieves and burglars, whose depredations have become so outrageous as to almost occasion thti necessity for a session of Judge Lynch's Court. Notices had been posted up in different parts of the town, purporting to emanate from that worthy, calling upon the citizens to meet before His Honor, for the purpose of devising some plan ef ridding the community of the pests with which it is infi-stcd." Olney is not the only town troubled with these gentry. We would in fer, from articles in our exchanges, that there had been a regular rain of thieves. There are much fewer detections, too, than common, which argues an unusual shrewd ness on the part of the rascals, or remarka ble dullness in the police. Slanderous. The Providence Journal says the mails from the Isthmus come laden with their nsual tidings of turn" oil and war in South America. " We should be as much surprised to hear of general peace on that continent, as to be assuted that no murder bad been committed in INew York for a week. JgTue Governor of Tennessee has nom 'mated a Board of Directors for the State Bank, composed, with one exception, of Democrats. Dr. G. P. Smith, formerly a mail agent, heads the list. The Nashville Banner thinks, for a "People's Bank," this Board is slightly partizan. G. Pikbcb. The Concord, N. Pa triot states that under no possible circum stances will General Pierce allow his name to go before the Charleston Convention as a candidate for the Presidency. This disposes of the charge that the Douglas movement in New England is really intended for Mr. Pierce. 8A Paris correspondent of the Provi dence Journal says it is rumored that Napoleon intends making Piedmont foot the bill of expenses incurred by France in the late war with Austria. Snow. The rst snow of the season fell at Indianapolis o i Saturday last. It didn't amount to much, however, melting as fast as it fell. A'i Logan3port and Kokomo there was quite a snow storm. Gov. Weller, of California, has sent to First ComDtroller Medill a thousand dol lar draft, for delivery to the Treasurer "of the Washington Monument Association, it being the first of the yearly contributions of that amount tendered by tne state oi Cal ifornia. g&The Southern Indianian says the St. Louis mills at Princeton, are sending off about six hundred barrels of flour each week, most of it going to New Orleans. An Important Disclosure The New York correspondent of the Charleston Cour ier says : Th nTnnrwtnn rtf rtnn rtf the dailv tOUT l 1 - . nals of this city have in their possession tne names of certain merchants and rich men in this city, who have been aiding and abetting just such men as " Old Brown " in creating disturbances and disaSections among the slaves at the South. The person who found them out did so by having a close communion and keeping up a regular attendance at Dr. Cheever's church.
',, New Habmoht, Oct. 31, 1859. f Editor Jocbsal: I promised you some notcj on the Posey County Fair-and only wish that some one more competent to the task had made the promise. Nevertheless, here are the facts : Tuesday and Wednesday, up to 12 o'clock M., were devoted ItTUSS enrryorartTeTesfarid arranging them for exhibition and examination. - In Class Kofi, .nouses, there were eijjhlyfive entries, Kentucky and Illinois" being represented. Much yt th ..' stock ; was very good, and some yeryinfcrior.' i -.f In Class Nos2;-cattle,- there were- -thirty entries. ! Posey ! county shows some good stock, and I wojdered that she "did hot exhibit at the District Fair. : In Class No. 3j jacks and mates;! there were six entries. None of the stock in this class could be called very goodj '; " c . In Class No. 4, sheep,, there :were eight entries. Some very good specimens of wool bearing animals were on exhibition. In Class No. 5, hogs, there were eight en
tries. Some of the stock in this class ..was very creditable. " - ' ' - -' In Class No. 6, poultry, there were six en-, tries ; a coop of Shanghais exhibited by Mr. White, were very fine. ',.. ' ."'.'. , In Class No. 1; vegetables,; there were twenty-eight entries, all of excellent quality. The potatoes, both Irish and sweet, were very good. Beets that ' were hard to beat. Cabbage that would make a German think of his Fatherland, and pumpkins that were pumpkins. The other articles in this class showed that the people of Posey understand how to cultivate their rich soil. In Class 8, grain and seeds, there were twenty-three entries the grain of corn, wheat, oats and barley, was good. . In Class No. 9, field crops, there were four entries, the statements made did not show a very heavy yield. . x rr In Class No. 10, fruit and flowers, there were twenty entries. The apples were good and quite a number of varieties.' Only one pear. Two lots of dried peaches and two of dried apples. ' There was a bushel of pealed dried peaches and a bt.3hel of dried apples put on exhibition by Mr.- Minney, that were the finest I ever saw. Tne ladies of New Harmony must have stripped their gardens, judging from the quantity on exhibition. Only one plant in bloom, was to be found, but that one was a beauty. In Class, No. 11, Mechanical, there were were forty entries, of plows there were four, the best two "horse- plow'on exhibition was made by Wm. Sheldon of Mt. Vernon. Several saddles and sets of harness were on exhibition, and all of them very good, but I think your townsman, Mr. D. M. Schnec, showed the best, but owing to the fact that thi3 was a County Fair he could not have a premium awarded him. The buggies were nothing extra; two good wagons, two pairs of boots, one pair of slippers, a stove and trimings and other tin and iron ware, made I guess out of the county. Harrows, Drills and cultivators made up the bill the Kirby mower and reaper included. ' : . ; ':" In Class, No. 12, Miscellaneous, there were one hundred and eighty-four entries, a most heterogeneous "mass, 15 quilts 8 pieces ef embroidery, 4 of tapestry, 8 bonnets, 3 carpets, 1 piece of jeans, 1 of flannel, honey, butter, bread, cakes, jellies, preserves, pickles, paintings, specimens of dentistry and tobacco, pastry and molasses, cord-wood and maple molasses, butter scotch and apple wine, canned fruit and stuffed birds, cordial and shawls as old as 1 am, but I' will quit for the time, words fail to, enumerate all that was in this class, it was rightly named and although so large, $7 would pay all the premiums at$l for the first, 50c for the second. : .. In Class No. 13, the ring-, there were forty-seven entries pacers and trotters in harness and under the saddle; no very, fast ones. Ten ladies rode for the county premium, and as many gentlemen not forgetting about a dozen boys. . The ; ladies rode well, and managed their horses as though they understood the art equestrian. The gentlemun rode well, and the boys so well that four premiums were awarded. The riding was one of the great features of, the Fair. In Class No. 14, sweepstakes, there were twenty-two entries. Illinois bore off the first premium for stallions. Good stock of all descriptions vere exhibited in this ring, and many of the premiums .went out of the county. On Friday there was a series of rings . . i , j Tr . i j v , I open 10 me woriu. jveniucny aau Illinois took premiums. Gibson, I believe, took one or two, but of. this I am not sure. The officers did all in their power to make visitors comfortable, and carry on the Fair to the satisfaction: of all. Kl.'.ix x. The mu3ic discoursed by the New Harmony Band needs no comment from, jne.Any one that has heard their performances will readily award to them tlie palm. - ' The ' managers made one mistake in the regulation of entries. All members and their families, (and I thought that Posey county could boast of the (argesl families in the State,) were admitted for one dollar, wbeth er they exhibited or not ; yet a person from out of the county wa3 charged two dollars., and their families had to purchase tickets. Experience will dictate a change the Fair will be opened to the world, and exhibitors will be the only persons., who will be admitted for the 8 mall fee, thus will they en courage persons to exbibit. it is tbe exhibitors who makes the Fair, and the greater tbe amount on exhibition, the greater the crowd to see the sights. The Fair opened to the world, would draw stock and labor saving machines from the whole country,' and our farmers and mechanics would thus have a chance, at least three days in the year, to. attend a great. Industrial School, and learn- more by seeing the articles, and have an interchange of thought with the owner, than they could learn from theorists in a whole year. . ; I ought not to omit noticing a fine display made, I believe, by Mr. a. Bolton and Jas. Tompson, Esq. - The growth of the sea, the land, and the air, was exhibited by them. - A beautiful Aquarium was there tiled with fish and other aquatic creatures; If gwas looked at by every one- , who visited the Hall. - The dinner servea on tne ground was good, better I thought, than at your, Fair, and at one half the price, only twenty-fire cents. ,.,' ., The citizens of New Harmony, proverbial for their hospitality, out did themselves, and all were made to feel at home, mirth and eood music prevailed, and I feel sure that no one who attended the first Fair of Old Posey, will ever forget it. Only one slierht accident occurred daring the whole Fair, and to have three thousand people together, and all happy, is worth Sail the trouble connected with Fairs. 1 The receipt were about one thousand dollars, enough I am told, to pay the premiums and other expenses. This is well.: . i IIarvowith. . Thomas D. Roliinson and Charles B. Stetson were elected delegates to the Charles-'' ton Convention by the District Convention, at Topsbam, Maine, on Wednesday last. Both are strong Douglas men, and strong Douglas resolutions were passed.
"The Louisville Courier tell the. fol-, lowing story of. the cool impudence of a. burglar in that city : LJL About two o'clock yesterday morning i

" None of your business;" quoth the burglar Mr: Frentz then told him to leave, or he would blow his brains out, to which the burglar replied, " I'll be d -d if it won't be the lust matvs brains you blow out." The owner of the store insisted upon his leaving, but the rascal demanded, "with much coolness, that he should light him ou -he front way, remarking "I don't intend to take the trouble to crawl out the back way."' But he did when Frentz commenced calling for the watch. The Lafayette Courier tells a tough story of a burglar of that place, who in a fit of repentance, or a misht of' the garment, brought back a new cloth coat he had stolen a few nights before from Mayor Connolly. lie entered the bouse about midnight, and softly deposited the stolen coat in the very place he had taken it from, and got away wiinoui Deing seen. - j; Su -A- "woman was recently tried in the Anderson, S. C, Circuit Court, on a charge of being a " common scold." She was defended by ex-Speaker Orr, who moved to quash the indictment on the ground that it was not an indictable offense in South Car olina. The motion to quash was sustained by the Judge, because that portion of the common law relating to this offense was obsolete in that State. " J " 1 S&The Democracy of Kansas have nominated Sam. Medary for Governor, with John P. Slough for Lieutenant and John A. Haldeman for Congress. There seems to be no department of manufactures which our mechanics undertake, in which they do not excel. We were shown, yesterday, a beautiful specimen of glue, from the manufactory of William G. Boepple, in the vicinity of our city, which equals in clearness the best of Irish glue. Our pressman and he is ,a judge says it "makes as good composition rollers as any glue he ever used. Johk Zimmerman is the manufacturer. So great celebrity has the new Factory acquired, that orders tor a vast amount of glue are already received from St. Louis and adjoining2 cities. The success of Mr. Boepple's enterprise is but another indication of the pre-eminence as a manufacturing point, which our: icity is rapidly attaining. 1 ' 1 Eplrama from the Knickerbocker.
