Selected Mlaeellany. j Mr. Hillaed, ia bis last letter to the Boston ; Courier, says: 'Let me mention with due comnieniiation another, excellent thing , or rather two in modern ' London ; the i cleanliness of the streets, and the substan- j tial manner iu which they are paved. Some of them are Macadamized in a very . thor- t ough style, forming a very hard and smooth surface, over which wheels run with no rumble or jar; some are paved, in a way that shows they have made the best use of the experience that such a city must furnish. Rectangular blocks of stone are used I think not granite, but a hard, compact limestone or sandstone these are laid edgewise, and the edges on whic'i tixe horses step are about three inches apart; thus there is a joint, or break, for the horse's hoofs to take j hold of about everv three inches, which is a great help in the -prevention of slipping. When the street rises from the gutter to the center, so that a horse naturally takes a diagonal line in going up, I observed that the blocks were sometimes laid transversly, 80 that the line of motion ' might be as nearly as possible at right angles with the line of the joints. A miniature steam engine, complete in all iU details, was exhibited at the California State Fair, of about one rat power, manufactured by Henry Rice, watchmaker, of Sacramento. A steam attachment was formed with a copper pipe, ' no larger in diameter than an ordinary straw, connecting with the boiler outside, from which it received its supply: and when under a full head, its fly wheel performed over two thousand revolutions a minutv Nothing could be more , beautituny accurate in i adjust ment. The cylinder has a three-sixteenth inch, seven-sixteenth inch stroke. It pro pelled a small turning lathe, and elicited from the spectators many complimentary retuarks upon the skill of its manufacturer. From the annual report of the Virginia State Treasurer, showing the operations of the fiscal year ending September 30, 1859, it appears that the balance of money on hand at that date was $222,888, of which 104,103 is to the credit of the commonwealth, $42,519 to the credit of the Literary Fund, 9,217 to the Board of Public Works, and $67,137 to the Sinking Fund. The actual receipts for the fiscal year were 6,571,711, and the actual diaoursemeats tor the same were $6,002,831. . The Memphis Avalanche, of the 21st, says there is but little hope of the recovery of Ex-Governor Jones, who has been very ill in that city for some time past. Governor June w.i.-i United Senator . from 1848-to 1857, and was Governor of the State from 1841 to 1845. He aeteated James K.. JolK, afterwards President of the United Slates, ia 1841 and 1843 in the race for Governor. He is a man of fine abilities and a national statesman, and his death would be a public loss. ' T Lawson Botts, the counsel for Brown and his confederates, a correspondent informs us, is a son of the late General Thomas H. Botts,' of Virginia, and nephew of John M. Bolts and the Princess Catherine D. Murat, of Florida. : His mother is a grand-nit e of General Washinirtou. Mr. Botts is said to be a young lawyer who relies ou his profession for subsistence, and a man of good ability and spotless character.' . .. In Philadelphia, according to the directory, there are 595 Smiths, 412 Browns, 336 Johnsons, 304 Joneses, 2S WLUiuuises, -225; Wilsons, and 178 Darises. Of the Smiths, 80 rejoice in the Christian namo of, John, while of the Joneses there are 26 who are known by that excellent prefix. Of the Johnsons, one half the number are colored. The editor of. the Louisville Democrat suggests an infringement of the guaranties ot the Constitution. He proposes that Gov. Wise shall write a letter to Gerrit Smith," reprimanding him lor his complicity in the Harper s Ferry affair. W ould not mat De an unusual and cruel punishment? Prentice. ' y The Delphi Journal says that an effort will shortly be made to procure the attachment ot a portion of Washington township, Tippecanoe county to Carroll. It is said to be th general wish of the citizens interested that this transfer of their couuty allegience should bo made. Such a remedy we are -now enabled to offer, with a perfect certainty that it will eradicate the disease, and with asemrnnre, founded on proof, tli.it no linrra can arise from ili . use iu any quantity. . Tiiat which protects from or prevents this disorder must be ot immense service in the communities where it prevails. Prevention is better than ' cure, for the patient escapes tlie risk which he must . run in violent attacks of this baleful distemper. This "Cure" expels the miasmatic poison of Fever and Ague from the system and prevents the development of the disease, if taken on the first ap-' proach of its premonitory symptoms. It ia not only the best remedy ever yet discovered for this class of complaints, but also the cheapest. The large quantity we supply for a dollar briugs it with- . iu the reach of everybody ; and in billious districts where Fever and Ague prevails, every body should ' have it and use it freely both for cure and protection. It is hoped that this price will place it within the reach of all the poor as woll as the rich. A great superiority of this remedy over any other ' discovered for the speedy and certain cure of Inter- : mittoiiu is, that it contains no Quinine or mineral, consequently It produce, no quinism or other in lurious effects whatever upon the constitution Those cored by it are. left as healthy as it they had , , never had the disease, ... , " Fever and Agne is not alone the' consequence of the miasmatic poisons A great variety of dieor- j ders arise from it irritation, among which are Neuralgia, Kheumatijm .Gout, Headache, Blindlets, Toothache, tarnche, 1181x11, Asthma, ralpii tation Painful Affection of the- Spleen, Hysterics .
