Blob In Newport. Some rowdies in Newport, Kentucky, on Friday evening last, mobbed the Free South printing establishment, pieing the type nnd throwing the forms into the river. The Free South was published and owned by WilliamS. Bailey. The editorials were written by Mr. Bailey, the type set by his daughters, and the forms put to press and worked off by his son. By dint of hard labor and the most rigid economy, the family managed to earn their livelihood. The politics of the paper was objectionable to a large majority of the people of Kentucky, a portion of whom have taken the liberty of removing the objection in the manner described above. Not content with destroying the office, tha mob grossly insulted the daughters of the proprietor, who plead with the rioters not to destroy their only means of making a living. Twenty-three men, headed by an old fanatic, throws two States into conniptions, and is only captured by United States troops, who are instantaneously dispatched for that purpose. A mob attacks a printing office, defended by an old man and ,his daughters, immediately under the nose of U. S. troops, at Newport, yet no orders are issued no drums beat to arms. Whatever Mr. Bailey's politics may have been, he was entitled to protection full as much as the most aristocratic of the first families of Virginia. Why United States troops should defend the latter and let the former go unprotected, is a thing for people to think about. Had Mr. Bailey violated any of the laws of Kentucky, he was liable to the penalty. vV'e apprehend the citizens of Newport will give character to their city by searching out the perpetrators of this outrage and bringing them to punishment. Such attempts to stifle free speech, is doing more to cause forays like that made by Brown, than all other causes combined. Mr. Bailey's politics are odious to three-fourths of the people in the North, who, nevertheless, will condemn this manner of stopping the dissemination of his sentiments. Jisj?" Our cotcmporaries seem to be perplexing themselves greatly about the politics of this paper. Having been so long in servitude to the leaders of some one of the political parties, they seem to think all papers are governed or controlled in the same manner. We are happy to state as we have heretofore done that we wear the collar of no party, and are not, consequently, compelled to grind out a particular tune, when the masters see fit to turn the crank. We advocftto what we honestly conceive to be the best interests of the people in " the Pocket," regardless of the effect it may have on this or that political aspirant's prospects. Despising demagoguery, when we saw po litical hacks asserting that Gerritt; Smith was elected to Congress by the Republicans, we published the figures, showingthat he was elected by Democratic votes. At this, the Enquirer throws up,its handsandcries " Black republicanism." Again, in stating facts due SenatorDouglas and other jirominent men of tha country, the Louisville Democrat says we are one of the soundest and most reliable Democratic papers in the State not even making an exception in favor of the Enquirer. Have it whichever way you please, gentlemen. ' l Arkbst of a Slatk. AJ slave named Toby with two or three aliases was arrested on Friday last, at Columbus, Ohio, b a deputy United States Marshal. Toby made a gallant resistance, .butwasfinally overpowered by numbers, thrust on board the Cincinnati train, and started South. A telegraphicdispatch was sent to Xenia, requesting persons there to procure a writ of habeas corput and intercept the fugitive at that place upon the arrival of the train ; the writ was served upon the United States Marshal by the Sheriff of the county, but the Marshal refused to obey it. About one hundred and fifty negroes had collected around the cars, and were furiously excited. When it was known that the Marshal refused to obey the writ, a cry of " rescue, rescue I" was raised, &a.d a, rush made for the train. The cosdector, at this juncture, gave tb.e sigaal to. start, and the rescuers fled from, the cars in hot haste. A trial was had before the. United States Commissioner at Cincinnati, and Toby was consigned over to his. mistress, who lived in Cabell county, Virginia, Toby had been a resident of berlin, Ohio, for near five years prior to his arrest. He escaped from hi3 mistress in 1854. Bt-The Vincennes Gazette says William P. Curry of that city has obtained a patent for an improved feed water apparatus far steam boilers. The object of this invention ii to obviate the injurious influence on the regularity of the feed caused by the spring of the rods which connect the float in the boiler with the stopcock or valve in the feed-pipe. The rods, between said float and stop-valve are so ananged that a double connection is effected, and that one of the rod3 always pulls as well when the .float rises as when it sinks dawn. By this arrangement the slightest motion of the float affjets the valve, no matter what the distance between the valve and the boiler may be. fgyThe contest ia Wisconsin, which will be decided next Tuesday, is on the question of " Squatter Sovereignty." Gov. Randall denounces popular sovereignty, in unmistakable terms, while his Democratic competitor, Mi.Hobart, stands squarely on the Douglas platform ; and, it is said, with some hopes of Fiiccees. BT, The Cleveland Herald says that Messrs. Hiram Griswold and A. G. Riddle left that city on Thursday night Tor Charlestown, Vu., l'J act af) counsel for Brown.

rather of a chaotic state. The probabilities are that the ticket supported by the Amer ican party, composed of selections from both the other parties, will bo elected. If this should be the case it would take a Philadelphia lawyer to decide which party was victorious. The Republicans unless they lost? heavily on account of Brown's evteute, will, doubtless, have a majority of the legislature. In case the Americans succeed, the Herald thinks there will bean entire reconstruction of parties in 1860.1 The conservative men of the country will once more enter the po litical arena, and rescue the government from the agitators who are now using it for the basest and most selfish purposes. S& A difficulty between the cititenB of Lawrenceburg and the managers of the O. & M. Railroad occurred a few days since, and there was a rnmor on the streets at one time, that a large, number of citizens had arranged plans for taking up the track with in the eorporarate limits. That would be too reckless to be sensible." S, Roger A. Prtor, one of the most talented men in Virginia, has been elected to Congress from the Petersburgh District, in place of Hon. Wm. V. Goode, deceased. Pryor stated on the stump, that, though Mr. Douglas was not his first choice for the Presidency, he would give him his cordial support in case he was nominated. ' Salb or am Interest is th Ohio Statk Joub.n-al. It is said that Mr. F. W. Hurtt, of Cincinnati, is about purchasing an laterest of one-half ia the Ohio State Journal. Mr. Hurtt is an energetic business man, and will prove a valuable accession to the Journal. " " ' : ', """ ' " S-OfA Kentucky State Republican Convention has been called to assemble in Newport on the 16th day of the present month, for the purpose of organizing the party, and forming a Presidential electoral ticket appoint two Senatorial delegates for the State at large, and transact such other business as may come before the Convention. Impertinent. -The Louisville Journal wants to know if the Harper's Ferry insurrection "is not a practical illustration of Douglas' Squatter Sovereignty doctrines, enunciated in Harper's Magazine?" Of course it ain't. It is said that the Postmaster General contemplates moving the Postoffice Stamp agency from Philadelphia to Washington. B3The State Sentinel has began the publication of Judge Douglas' reply to Judge Black. It is a ponderous article, and will occupy several numbers of that paper before it is completed. BU Wheat is selling at 85 and 90 cents ia Vincennes, though but little is coming in. Corn is worth from 30 to 35 cents, and the supplr is said to be ample. Bgk, The Sons of Malta had a midnight parade, in Lafayette, on Wednesday night (or Thursday morning)' last. The procession was quite large and imposing. SHHfHr. J. A. Ford lost a package of money recently, in Lafayette, containing over $1,700. He offers t reward of $500 for its recovery. '' B?2u We learn that Charles R. Doming, formerly of this city, has been unanunpusly nominated by the - Democratic party f one of the counties in Kansas, as a candidate for State Senator. Laf. Jouc.-x Is that the same Charles R. Peming that was indicted in Indianapolis, a few years ago, for robbing the mail, and who got off by some hocus pocus, kLOwn only to the initiated? v .:' , ;', W(ihlBgtoa Item. We clij the following items from, the Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette : There is trouble between the hanaonious Democracy In Philadelphia, Florence and Collector Baker being at loggerheads! , , A good story is tohL by a Lancaster paper, of an incident which occurred during Buchanan's recent' visit. Mr. McLane is still ia Baltimore, but will leave in a tew days in the Brooklyn for-Vera Cruz, where it is belieTed the treaty will be arragned on a satisfactory basis. It is be lieved hat Juarezes not unwilling to have a rapture with Spain, as it would give him an opportunity, with our assistasce, of course, of carrying tho war into Africa, by attacking Cuba. John A. Dix is to-day first on the books for the French Mission, but to-morrow soma oo else rrt,y be a head taller. Senator Douglas' wife has been seriously ill, but is now recovering. Francis J. Grund, tho noted Hessian and toady to Cass, is about to write a book. For the sake 'or many reputations it ia to ha hoped it will not contain a correct history of lunuj luuiuuicui. men who wQom ce nas been associated as fugleman. The Forbes revelations trumpeted with so much wind by the New York Herald, don't amount to much. They show that many prominent Northern men have helped old Brown along; but it does not prove that they had any intimate acquaintance with his scheme. In view of many applications to the President for Midshipmen appointments, the Constitution says it has been requested to state that the act 'of Congress of" "August 31st, 1852, expressly provides that after this date, no appointment of Midshipmen or pupils at any Navy Schools be made unless recommended by the member of Congress representing the District in which the applicant resides, in the same manner that Cadets at West Point are now appointed. Tke President has power ' to appoint ten Cadets at lnrge, but not one Midshipman. The Scientific American has rather a poor opinion of the water gas about which the Philadelphia papers made such a fuss recently. It says such a pas is inferior to rosin rhs by just the amount of water vupor mixed with it, and is not any cheaper.
