EVANSVILLE. INP , SATURDAY MORNING OCTOBKB 29
SgTbe Capt- E. Cook, arrested at Cbambersburgb,' b tb brother-in-law of Governor Willard." Tbe State Sentinel informs ug that the Governor, Hon. J. E. McDoxaid, and D. W. VooatcEfia, haro left for Charlestown to attend his trial. Tbe Sentinel is extremely fearful that some one will misconstrue tbe Governor's motives, and according enters into a labored defense of bis course. No one, we apprehend, will censure the Governor, and the Sentinel, bj its uncalled-for defense, onljr manifests what ils coarse would hare been had Cook proved to be a relatioa of a leading Republican, instead of Gov. Willard. Bask Scspkxsios ix Mikstksota. The Bank of tbe State of Minnesota, and tbe Nicollet County Bank (Minnesota,) hare both suspended. Tbe issues of the former are based upon Minnesota 8 per cent bonds, which re at par in New York city: those of the latter are based upon j .University bond3, for which, we presume, there is no sale at an price. There is little or no circulation of either of the above banks in thu Stale. 53, The Great Eastern steamed and sailed from Portland to Holvbcad, a distance of five hundred and fifty miles, in forty-eight hours. The greatest speed attained was 6tvcntf en miles per hour. The veather wa3 sqmlly, and the amount of steam used was only twenty pounds, so that no tstituate, from the present data, can be furued of the speed of the Leviathan. 2T The Terre Haute Journal says that (Irecrsj of the Vincennes Sun, received a copy cf the Dongla3 invitation, but instead of obtaining signatures for it, he put it in bis pocket. The reason alleged by the editor of the Sun for ibis course is, that he was afraid, if tbe great Senator should come, he tniht raise a fuss in tbe Democratic ranks. The Journal denominates that as being " rather n:ce." . t3)r"Th'e latest advices indicate that the Fan Juan difficulty i3 not so near an amicable adjustment m was supposed. The British have decided to dispatch a man-of-war to Fagot Sound. John Bull will undoubtedly mike quite n bluster about his wounded honor, but we apprehend no very serious resu'ts. EQThs contest ia Maryland between Col. Hughes, Democrat, and Mr. Hajner, Opposition, is peculiarly bitter. At a recent li3cn3ion, in Prince George's county, the former gave the latter the lie, and received, in rcturu, a blow. Hughes, it is said, has challenged his opponent. We hope, however, it may result us most of the Virginia challenges. Cuange or Name. The Board of Directors of the New Atbany and Salem Railroad Company haTe resolved to change the cororute name.' It will, hereafter, be called the " Louisville, New Albany and Chicago Railroad Company." It will be recollected th.it this road changed hands about a year ao. The new owners bare invested largely during the past year in improvements, and are fist getting it into the order of a nVst-dasi road. Sons or Malta. The State Journal, of Thursday, says number of scamps are going about the country making money by peddling out a bogus ceremony which they call the initiatory degree of tbe I. O. S. M. They charge each individual on whom they confer it the sum of fiftv cent;. ,The Pacific Railroad Company of Misiorrl ha3 advertised for proposals for tbe gradii and masonry on nearly or quite all ot tbe route from tbe present terminus, near Tipiwn, to Kansas City. From this, it would seem that tbe directors are satisfied that the means will be in' some way provided to construct the balance of tbe road. 3. Some scoundrels in Louisville, recently attempted to enslave a family of free negroes, but were foiled by the negroesi luckily having free papers in their possession. The kidnappers were promptly arrested and lodged in jail. CaT The Hon. W. W. Boyce, of South Carolina, has written a letter declaring bis preference for Gen. Joe. Lane the 44 Marion of the Mexican war"' fir the Presidency. Lane seems to be the 44 coming man," and of all the Northern aspirants, his chances seem to be improving the mo3t rapidly. tTi,Tbc arms recently furnished to a volunteer company, composed oi' bl-ck. men, in Philadelphia, have bven taken away by the Adjutant General on account of the Harper's Ferry outbreak. , E?3,Tbe St. Paul Daily Times sajs it hopes that one of the Crst act3 passed by the Republican Legislature, recently elected in Minnesota, will be tbe passage of an efficient Registry I.ttv. tTOver 200 s!ave3 left St. Louis on Wednesday for the South. Tbe drain on tbatStatr, if continued, will soon reuder it free of rkves. CTThe Post Office at Marietta, Ohio, was destroyed by fire on the afternoon of the 2Sth. The books, letters, and papers of Ibe oCice were all saved. A IUkd-Hearted Auditor. The State .Auditor of Massachusetts has refused to paj a bill of forty-six dollars for a suit of clothes charged iu tbe account of 41 some person employed iu the public service." The Traveler intimate!, rather than states, that the suiue auditor bus declined to pup u member of the committee, sent on public busiuess to Philadelphia, tbe expenses of his family on a tour to Niagara.
Jons Brow. -C. L. Vallandigham, member of Congress from the Da vtdn District, Ohio, who was casually present' at the examination of Capt Brown, at Harper's Ferry ,"gives the" following account of the
man ; . " It is vain to underrate either the man or his conspiracy. Capt. John Brown is as brave and resolute a man as ever bended an ! insurrection, and,, iaa. gacuLcause&nd with 1 a sufficient .force, ; would Lave been a con- j summate 'partisan " commander. ' lie has coolness, daring, persistence, the stoic faith ws A tdt ianMi " sb tv, a fiFmnasinftf Ttll an n auu athaw mm a iuuvvb w . purpose . unconquerable, e-HV is tall, wiry, muscular, but with little flesh with a cold, gray eye, gray hairy beard and mustache, compressed lips and sharp, acquillne rioseof cast' iron lace -and frame, and .with powers of endurance 'equal to anything needed to be done or suffered 4n any cause. Though engaged ia a wicked, mad and fanatical enterprise; he is tbe farthest possible remove from the ordinary1 ruffian,-fanatic or madman ; but his powers are rather executory than inventive, and he never had the depth or breadth of mind to originate and contrive himself the plan , of -insurrection which he undertook to carry out. . - - , T The conspiracy was, unquestionably, far more extended than yet appears, numbering amoLg the conspirators many more than the handful of followers who assailed Harper's Ferry, and having in the North and West, if not also at the South, as its counsellors and abettors, men of intelligence, position, and wealth. Certainly it was one among the best planned and executed conspiracies that ever failed. For two 7 ears be badr been plotting and preparing it, with aiders and comforters a thouiand miles apart, in the slave States and the free; for six months he lived without so much as a suspicion in a slave State, and near the scene of the insurrection, winning evta the esteem and confidence of bis neighhors, yet collecting day by day large quantities of arm, and making rady for the outbreak. lie bad as cc r 'ete an equip ment, even to intrenching ' as any com mander in a rcgui ii ;...)" ed, like Napoleon, u" : ' He had Sharpe's rifles an volveri for marksmen, and slaves. d intendppoi t w.r. .aaynard's repi' c3 for t-e In the dead hour of the night, dossing the Potomac, he seized the Armor) with many thousand stand of arms nd ether munitions of war; and making prisoners of more than thirty of the workmen, officers and citizens, overawed the town of Harper's Ferry with its thousands inhabitants. With less than half a score of men surviving, he held the Armory for many hours, refusing, though cut off from all succor, and surrounded upon all sides, to surrender, and was taken with sword in hand, overpowered by superior numbers, yet fighting to the last. During this tbort insurrection eighteen men were killed, and ten or more severely wounded twice the number killed and wounded on the pnrt of the American force at tbe battle of New Orlean?. John Drown failed 'ioexcitw a general and most wicked, blood.t nod desolating, jtrvile, and civil war, only because tLe slaves aud non-slavebolding white wen of the vicinity, the former twenty thousaud in number, would not rise. He bad prepared arms and amunition for fifteen hundred men, and captured at the first blow, enough to arm more than fifty thousand; and yet he had less than 30 men more, nevertheless, than Lave begun half the revolutions and conspiracies which history records. But he had not tampered with slaves, nor solicited the nonslaveholdirg whites around him, because he really believe I that the moment tbe blow was struck they would gather to his standard, and exiccting, furthermore, tbe promised reinforcements instantly from the North and West. This was the basis upon which the whole conspiracy was planned; and had his belief been well founded, be would unquestionably have succeeded in stirring up the most formidable insurrection, possibly involving the peace of the whole country, and requiring, certainly, great armies and vast treisures to suppress it. Religions Mlsocllanjr. Da. Bicllows' Last. Dr. Bellows recently told his congregation that 44 tbe time bad arrived when Unitarianism has the option either to hpse into Rationalism, or turn more decidedly into the body of the Church of Christ; finding there its home, and communicating the joy of a son supposed to have been lost, returning strong and happy to bis father's home." Ia Search or a Pastoo. A Congregatiooalist pastor, iu Connecticut, says that 14 when a pulpit was vacant now-a-daXs, the church generally appointed a committee to go and make inquiry of some theological professor, or of some other eminent divine, for a suitable candidate. The first question about bim usually was, Is he a popular man ? The second, Is he a good speaker? Third, Is he social and easy in his manner? Fourth, Is he a man of decided talents?' Fifth, Can be. live on a small salary?. And. then, as tbe committee was about taking leave, with hat in band, and one foot over tbe door sill, it is sometimes added he's a man of piety, we supdose." Beschzr ox thi HtRKArrr?.. Tbe B03ton. Recorder quotes from one of Mr. Beecher's late sermons tbe following : M One thing I know, nnd that is, that there is no other name but the name of Christ, given under heaven, that we know anything about, whereby we must be saved. 44 For he who live3 and die; , believing in Christ, shall not "-,!;. u.r ;,. rl-wting life. Whether any re everlisting life or not, ia u- ,r me to say. I will not sit in judgiue. ,iju them, neither will I st up a judgment against them." . JlQ7Tho Methodist paper published in Liberia rejoices over a ."recent outpouiiL of the Holy Spirit, felt in all the churches of the community," and thinks that 44 the peculiar features of tbe work indicate that it is only the commencement of a great blessing which our Heavenly Father designs for Africa.'" Presbytemax Loxuxvity. A writer, speaking cf ' clerical mortality,'" pays that 44 the lowest ascertained death-rale in tbe world is fifteen annually out of every thousand; the highest being more than double that and wus found in the most notorious districts in England, where thirty-six out of every thousand wa the proportion, of death 9. Of the 2,500 ininLeters belonging to the Old School Prccbyterian body in May, 1858, thirty-one died within the year following, making the ":eath-rate twelve and a half, or one-sixth lower than the most favored people known on the ar'h, as to hedth,"Up n these declarations, the Recorder comments : "What we bare, with ?ad forebodings, long expected, is now realized in Mr. Beecher'sopen ji'ianionment of the doctrine of the inevitable and eternal prdition of UBgodly meu. The boldness with which he sets aside the plain averments of the Son of Cod, is more a jrrlef than a .-urpri.se. Tbe secret of his fratcrnizlug with Chapiu and Parker, is now fully explained io '' opcu avonal of the maiu priuiipk of Universalism which is, that all the Scriptural assertions of tbe sure and eternal punishment of thu waked,
fail to make us know that they will be thus punished. Now, in conceding to tbe ranks of Uni versa lism, this gifted mind, the main source of our sorrow, is not in. the loss to him personally, nor in the loss of him, great as these may be; nor in that his genius is hereafterjto he cptnfy employed, against the
principles of bis former. profession; but in the thought of tbe multitudes! that are to fall with bim. Captivated with the splendor of his genius, they have been seduced to applaud him in all tbe displays of that genius, at tbe expense of Christian doctrine, till they bare come to think as lightly of all Christian truth, as he thought when he said that 4 Doctrine is nothing but the skin ef troth set up and stuffed.' " Maertinq TJxdsb Ditficcltibs. A couple were married in Gallatin, Tennessee, on Monday last, who bad walked 100 miles for that purpose. They were from Kentucky, and when they arrived at Gallatin were out of money, and perfectly destitute, not having a cent to par for their license. The magistrate-married them gratis, -and tbe young men of Gallatin gave them a sufficient sum to pay their expenses home. ; tgk.The New York Tribune says, we see it stated in some of the journals that Kagi, one of the' agents and victims of John Brown's insurrection, was " the Kansas correspondent of tbe New York Tribune!' This is not true. The only correspondent we ever employed in Kansas ia Mr. Wm. A. Philips, who went to that territory for ,us in 1854, and has been in our service there ever since.
