ground in places in the woods was covered, I did not suffer much. "ja - a The evening's chat undWthc diuiif tihed revealed te character andstory of the mem- j bersof the conjrrfplioo. isVgaW rejko'.y 1 natives of Atlantic States; among them were three or four Scotchmen and Germans. All of tfae had been brought into the wil-
derness by a love of adventure and the pros- body and every thing around him. If the pecta of cheap tends, to aeqnrre which wa , own, aba aaid, had only had the couraga to the chief object of their sacrifices. None of seize and confine him, or it his slayer, inthem were married ; but all of them had j stead of shooting him, bad knocked him fri:nda and relatives they designed to bring down with a club, he would have thanked into the country. A few were mere wan- them the next day; his life would have darers, without an object or purpose, but to , been spared, and she would have escaped a
live from month to month. The solitary shanvy was occupied, I had obaerved, by a widow and two children a boy five or six, and a girl of three years old. The children were the pets, apparently, of all the men ; they were comfortably and neatly draasad. The mother's neatly doue up hair and tidy calico dress showed more attention to personal appearance than would have been expected in such a place. I had seen her at the door of her shanty, with her pale, sad face, as expressionless as marble, resting on her hands, the victim, as I supposed, of the prevailing chills and fever in their worst and most obdurate form. At supper she came into the dimly lighted shed from the deep shades of the forest, moving like a spectre of grief and despair. Each one of the men, by turns, rose to give her a place, and spoke kindly and cheerfully to ber ; but she scarcely made any reply, but sat for some time and sipped her coffee in Silence, and then rose covering her face with her handkerchief and in a convulsion of emotions and tears, Bbe walked hastily away to her cabin, leaving her children to the care of the men. I was told by the man at my side, that she had met a great sorrow. Her husband had a few evenings before been shot down before her eyes ou the spot where we were sitting; under our feet we could see where the earth had drank up the pool cf blood in which tt.e poor man bad died. The story was told by the crowd with sad and sympathising faces. The deceased had been bead sawyer, and he and his wife ayre the first comers, and bad been ti .cy.aia in ibe wilderness. U the 1aw of the Ettal occurence, some un- had brought a jug of strychnine, rifla whisk j upon the preniisoj and ae was tempted to drink freely of it. The eoect was to render him a d uion, and he turned upon his beat aud moet intimate frieuvi, the Superintendent, on whoa be rushed with a bowse knife, threatening him with instant death. The latter tied, and esci ped from the lunatic ; but as soon as he re-appeared upon the premise:?, the infuriated drunkard nude after him again. In the third or fourth assault the Superintendent fled to the eating shed, and there became cornered by bis pursuer, so that escape was impracticable, and as the drunken maniac was rushing upon him, brandishing his knife in the dim light of the moon, the Superintendent drew a revolver and shot him down in bis tracks. Just as the husband entered the shed in pursuit of his intended victim, the wife heard the click of the pistol, and threw herself between them, and clasped her husband around the waist to shield and arrest him ; but he cast her, like a child, from him, and she recovered herself only to see him fall and expire at her feet. The fatal click of the pistol and the terrible shriek of the husband still ring in the ears of the disconsolate mother. The obliteration of memory only, she says, will still the heart-rending, awful, expiring yell of her murdered husband which startles her day and night. The remains of the deceased were put into a rouh box, and as there were no magistrates or officers of the law within thirty miles, the body, after being kept two days, was buried without legal inquest or religious rites, under the shade of an oak, in the forest. The act, in the eyes of all who beheld it, being considered justifiable, no steps were taken to arrest the perpetrator. But he could not endure the sight of the wretchedness he had caused. The lamenta tions of the stricken wife and the tears of the fatherless children, he said, were more narrowing and unendurable than the heaviest physical punishment. He begged an interview with the widow; implored her forgiveness; aid though he was acquitted by the world and forgiven of her, he had found he had incurred a terrible penalty, which would follow and make him wretched througa life. Be lamen d that he had saved his own life at so heavy a cost, and said if his own death would restore her husband, he would joyfully submit to it. With a solemn pledge that be would give himself up to justice, at the approaching term of the court, and that he would aid, if spared, the wife and children of the murdered man, he left the mill on the day before my arciva). The sympathies of all tne men, who dwelt unceasingly on the circums' mce of the frrihT. tr.lv were enuallv divided 1 a.vsv wswwM ' " l J tween the disconsol te widow and the conscience-stricken man wTio had brought tlie heay al.-.ctlons upon her. In a wilderness with two LelIe:$ children, sod none but me- of the rudest lubits ml natures around hci, she was utterly forlorn and heart broken. A wurd of syinpato and consolation from one whom she thought was of a kindlier nature, optoed a vent to ti e impulses or ber heart, anl feUe poured forth a flood of feeling, that sec. d to bring relief to an overburtbcped hojom. She told how early she and her hnabaud bai been united in life, when both were bat cbilreo how they bad wandered and strugled to find and secure a home how kind ba had ever been to her-,-how he had dot-

She rela- j tcl huw 'xtpcatMt he always had teca, ' when he returned to himself, for his violent , conduct when in liquor, now gentle and J kind he was at all other times, to every
heavy affliction one that God alone could lift from her heart. She had heard no preaching for five years, aud had never had but a little religious teaching, but she had always put her trust in the Providence of a Heavenly Father, and she now found her only consolation and relief in prayer, and in casting all her afflictions on Him who bad promised to bear the burthen of every sincere and afflicted heart. She could not talk to those around ber on these subjects, though they were kind and tried to console her; but a friend of ber own sex, or a good minister, would give her unspeakable relief. The incidents of the terrible tragedy and the subsequent conduct of the slayer ; his remorse and dejection, were repeated, day after day, with graphic particularity, that showed that her mind was running so constantly upon the horrid scene, that there was danger of insanity. As long as 1 remained, the afflicted woman sought me out to pour into my ar the story of her sor rows ; as it apparently lightened the burthen to have it shared with another, I took as much of her load as she could transfer to me. I learned that her husband had a bal ance of v300 due from the mill, which would be paid in a few weeks, and which would take her home to her friends in Georgia. Till that was received, arrangements were made to send her and her children tea tit lae on the banks of the St. Francis. This incident, with many others I lave met wlih on our fro'i tiers, has impress 0 me with the i onviction that if the money gathered for foreign tn.-siotis were spent in the waste place of our country, the fruits would be r u-fu. i what kWj . re. Au Albany Me li-.uilc'a Opinion of Evaiisvlllr. ,uJM one of the intelligent mechanics brought from w Albany to complete the new sataaabsa at our landing, give." the following impressions of Evansville, in a letter to the New Albany Tribune. The writer will learn on further acquaintance, that We have, lcsides all others, requisites tor a iargc city, thoae of good wella, aud an accommodating postmaster. It is only neIMgMJTJ to dig to too depth of the bed of the river, to obtain the finest water that flows in the earth. The elevated position of the city requires wells to be deep, and they are expensive, but excellent when made. Our Canal gives an abundant supply of pure wo. ter, for ui.tiiulacturiiix purposes, that is earned to every part of the city w ithout any other expense but the costs of the pipes and to laying of them. The difficulty in our post office arrangements will be remedied by carrying the complaint to Mr. Kudd, who evinces a disposition to do all in his power to accommodate the public, especially the Deruocrutic masses : ;'The every day affairs of life work many ch:uiges, and one of thera has brought me to this place, where now, for the first time, I become satisfied of the important position it occupies among the prominent towns of the State. Situated as it is on a broad level plain, above high water mark, between the Wabash and Green rivers, and at the terminus of the Wabash & Erie Canal and the Evansville A Crawfordaville Railroad, it possesses the advantages of the trade of all of them, and of the rich farming countries thro' which they pass, and becomes a great depot tor the productions of all those great thoroughfares, from whence they are re-shipped to New Orleans, aud the proceeds therefor again sent on the way to reward the honest larrueror mechanic; iu the interior. Manufacture.here appear to be largely on the increase. There nre numerous foundries, extensive cooper-shops, working steam machinery ; several tlouriug mills and saw mills, starch factories, soap factories, breweries, distillery, tanneries, and numerous other branches of mechanics too tedious to mention. In boat building but little is done here. One small boat has been built here this season, aud is now nearly finished ; two others are finishing here. One built at Paducah is to have the cabiu of the old Southern Hell moved to her; the other, a small boat, is having a new cabin put on her, mostly by New Albany mechanics. In short, I think that Kvansville is a thriving business place; is inproving very fast, and destined to become the largest city in the State, which she has all the requisites for, except two, uamely : good water and an accommodating Postmaster. Of these she is sadly deficient. I have seen but two wells in the city, and understand that tlitie is but about half a dozen in all. The inhabitants generally use cistern or river water. The Postmaster thinks I so little of accommodating the laboring class that he never opens his office until after time to commence work. He closes it Bt aboat II o' dock, or a few minutes after ; I wns il at 2: and cls gail ut 5. so that the man engaged at bis daily toil, if he cannot gvt a friend to call at the office I a .ur ;.im, musl lose his time to call at the rbco when it is open, unless be can, as a rarv. uuuce, drop ia U;tween 12 and the few luiuutcs after that the mail may he behind time, which sometimes favors him with an opportunity to hud the office open. The Invitation to Ma. Douglas. An anti-Lecompton Democrat wishes us to say that the reason why the invitation to Mr. Douglas to visit the State was not signed in this county, wa? simply because the leuders of the movement at Indianapolis failed to send any of the printed copies of the letter to Mr. Douglas to this county for circulation. Whether the omission was designed orjaccidcntal, it is viewed by the friends of Douglas, as a slight to one of the strongest Douglas counties in the State. If a copy of the letter had been received here, it would have been signed by a large body of the Democracy, as well as by men who hold themselves independent of all party organizations. There is a very general desire expressed by the people of this Congressional District that Mr. Douglas shall be invited to speak at Evansville, to the voters of the Pocket, wbo control the vote of the State, and make up, in every contest, its Democratic majorities. It is a place, too, at which he can address bis numerous and ardent friends in the Green river regions of Kentucky. We hope some steps will be taken by the anti-Lecompton men of this District to induce Mr. Douglas, while in the State, to visit and address the people of the Pocket. The Forney Libkl. The Philadelphia Press reiterates, " upon the best authority," that President Buchanan did express his purpose, on returning to Washington, of consulting Attorney General Black, "about prosecuting the editor of the Jres for a libel," in consequence of the publication of the Broderick article. That paper adds: " If Mr. Buchanan desires more direct evidence of the fact that he did threaten a prosecution of the editor of the Preu, because we demanded to know whether he felt his conscience clear of the blood of DaTid C. Broderick, it will be forthcoming." TIk Louisville Journal, on the other hand, stvs of this affair: M Col. Forney's Washington correspondent aays Cat Mr. Buchannn must at hnrt feel himself guilty of Mr. Broderick's I 'local IK don t believe that the 1'resident experiences half the regret in fw.ing himselt guilty of Broderick's blood that he do.3 in feeling himself innocent of Forney." The Vcvay (Ind.) Stwt, a miscel laneous paper, is at outs with the Evansville Enquirer nbout Senator Douglas. The Ad tnii, -t: ion friend? in Evansville have adopted the Journal (Black Rept'olican) to attack the Democratic convention which ai assembled in thai district and passed Dougresolutions. We trust that they will see the folly of attacking a Democratic convention. The above u from the Louisville Democrat, a paper whose poluical doctrines and course we have commended tor years; by whose side we have been fighting for Douglas ever since the war on him began. Iu calling us black the Democrat is smutting its own ;.i. If the Journal is Black Republican, the staunchest Democrats in this District arc guilty of the sin, and the Democrat itself ought to be excommunicated trom the Democratic communion. From rnE Kansas T iv Minks. lbs Indianapolis Atlas has a 1 .-of late papers published at Denrcr city, from which it learns that it is the opinion of the explorers that ten years will not suffice even to prospect the country, to explore its mountains and valleys, to say nothing of developing the hidden wealth. They conclude by saying: "Another year will open a dozen districts as rich iu mineral as the famous Gregory's, and probably more vnluable. Conklin k Co.'s quartz mill is nearly ready for work. Several gentlemen htd beeu engaged all summer in taking ambrotype views of scenes on the Rocky Mountains, " the diggings," Ac, Ac., with the view of getting up a panorama for exhibitiou in the States during the winter. Twelve hundred dollars bad been raised to build a school-house. A gold refining and assay office was about being established, the necesaryy apparatus having arrived for that purpose. William J. Holltdan, of Noblesville, Indiana, has made a fortunate location in the mines, taking out more than $100 per day. A Cheap Pavement. In Memphis, where tbey have uaed large quantities of aifted gravel to make a permanent road bed for their streets over their soft clayey soil, without satisfactory results, the city authorities hm j . ave adopted a new sort of pavement. A lw.l of arreened irravel i- first laid ilnwn and coal tar, from the gas works, 'u ourvd j over it, till it is saturated w ith the tar for several incites ia depth ; then the whole is covered with fine sand, which mixes with the tar and gravel, and aa it indurates, the surface becomes as firm, apparently, ns n rock. As far as the experiment has leen tried, it has proved eminently satisfactorily, i and 'he new pavement is being txU u.iol to other streets. From fifty to sixty barrels of , tar are reciaried Sr a block of three) hunurd tect. There may be something in this new n: de of street improvement worthy of the attention of onr City Council. A Sad X'cciDfWT. The Sullivan Democraf says : Wc learn that a Mrs. Lowry, of Uutsonville, Ills., was k 'led almost insuotly, one day last week, ner that place. In this way, they have involuntraily been made to appear in the unenviable character-; of spies and informers againat barkeepers and some of their associates, who have on occasions indulged in a glass of lager beer. The result has been that they have incurred the ill-will and persecutions of those against whom they have been compelled to testify. Tbey are exemplary lads, whose employment as newspaper carriers and collectors of bills, oblige them often to pass into barrooms. They think it unfair and ungenerous to subject them to a process by which they arc made odious to those with whom they are obliged to deal, or have daily associations.
