KVAM8VILLE. IMP.
TUESDAY MORNING... ..JDCTOBM 18 Party C The position assumed by the Richmond (Va.) IF in reference to the organization of tho next House of Representatives has occasioned quite a flatter among politicians. The W U eBipbatically declares that it prefers supporting the most ultra of the Republicans for Speaker, to any of the so-called Democrats. The Whig is very influential in the Opposition party South, and its present position, taken in connection with that assumed by Winter Davis and several other distinguished Southern politicians, is regarded as indicative of the coarse that will be pursued by the 21 members elected from the Southern States who are opposed to the Administration. The New York Herald, in particular, whose speculations are numerous and not very sagacious, sees, in this movement of the Whig, the germ of a great organization that will sweep the country in 1S60 as did the Whigs in 1840. We would like to see a thorough uniting of the opponents oW the Administration in the campaign of 1860. We do not believe, however, from present indications, that our desire will be fulfilled ; and we doubt, somewhat, whether any permanent good would result if it was. It is presumed that the spoils will keep a party together long after its Drincmles have been aoanaoneu. mis is true of tbe Democracy, but would it bold good with the Opposition ? We think not. It never did with the old Whig party, nor would it with any partJ W mi8ht 1)6 fniraed out of the element of Opposition that now eiist. In 1854, the American party swept the country like a tornado, and yet they were weeks securing the election of a Speaker; and in 1855, they didn't make even a re ppecUblc show of strength. The party that achieves success by ignoring all platforms, spitting upon all creeds, except the secu ring of the offices will hardly stand up asjfainstjthe first reverse, and will often tumble to nieces with its own might. Platforms are essential. There must be some rallying point some banner which the eye of the soldier can behold while he struggles iu the thickest of the fight. If any great question arises, whether it be that of a National 9 Hank, a Protective Tariff, or sub-treasury ; u hclhcr it be how the Territories shall be governed : whether Cubashall be purchased, or how the Oregon boundary question shall be stt tied; wc hold that these questions should Ik embodied in tbe resolutions of arties; should be discussed before the peo ple, and by them decided at the ballot box If onr (Jovernment is not sufficiently strong to permit the settlement of these questions in this way. it fails of its mission, and dis appoints the expectation of its founders. Whether the territorial doetrino of Mr. Inuiglas, that of the Republicans, or that of the Administration be true let the people decide. But let us have no shifting .-hulllinji, or political trickery, so that the people can not fully understand in voting for a particular man, what principle they are supporting. Let ea.-h party emblazon its creed fairly and squarely upon its forehead, select its exponent, and anneal to the people. If that be done, we have no fearj but that a righteoud verdict will be given. In former years, that party was most successful who presented its position to tho people in tbe most simple and concise manner. Th aim of latUi-day politicians is to so conceal their creed nuder a mass of verbiage smooth sentences and cloudy expressions that the people will be at a loss to know what they mean, and, consequently, put one construc tion on i in one State, and adifferent one in anotb r. The Democrats secured success in 18.V- by pursuing this course. Will the same success attend a similar procedure in i860? If the Richmond Whig, then, by urging the Southern members to unite on a Repub lican Speaker, wishes to endorse their creed, it can be understood. If it only desires to bid for a share of the spoils, it is to be hoped no attention will be paid to its advice. Ev ery sensible man has become convinced that the great question of "free soil" is to be definitely settled one way or another. All parties must meet it, and they might as well do so first as last. The sooner the question of how the Territories shall be governed is settled, the sooner will the agitation of slavery cease. We have no fears of a cissotion of the Union. Neither does any of the intelligent, North or South. It is a u catch word " that has had its day. "Occasional" writes to the Phila delphia Press, that husiuca men in Washington are beginning to look forward hopefully to the opening of the new Congress. The last recess hsnbeen the dullest and most unproductive tJMfchingtoii has ever known. All classes seem to have felt tbe stagnation, and nothing but tbe responsibility of the loading boust s, kept their bonds above water during tbe calm. The next six or eight months will, however, be animated enough. Politics and business will both be stirred to their profoundest depths, and any amount of adventures of all kinds will be attempted. 'heColnmbua Gazette sajs : "In remmi to the United States SenaUjrship, we will not venture an opinion : but tbe result of tbii State election insures the nomination l.y the Ki ;ul.lii iins of the Chase ami Kates tu kit fbl tht fm sideiicr and Vice Presidency, beyond a peradvenrure in our opinion .' aT Hon. John Y. Mason, United States Min'ntr at the Court of France, died of uptjt on the 3d instant. He was a native of Virginia, and has occupied his present position about six years, having been appointed Ly President Pierce in 1853.
Miaa HSW1.WT. Crescent Cty Hall has ,
been secured for this lady, and she will deliver her last lecture there instead of at Marble Hall. This, djaetleas, will be the last opportunity that will be offered our citrcni to bear this talented speaker. Whatever views we may entertain as to the truth or falsity of her teachings, one thing is conceded by all. She presents them in their most favorable light, and urges them with an eloquence equally persuasive and charming. We think she will he greeted with a full bouse to-night. An admittance of ten cents will be charged. fjfj It is a fact that is becoming notorious, that I. Psbrt Elliott's Photographs are far superior to any that are made in this part of the country, and equal to any that are made East or West. Any one who doubts it, need but to call at the City Gallery, No. 45 Main street, examine tho splendid likenesses of Miss Holitt's and others, which he has recently made to be convinced. Mail Robbery. On Monday night the post office at Vintennes was broken into, and the whole mail from Indianapolis and the East for Eransville, as well as from Louisville to Henderson, carried off bodily. It was one of the boldest and most suece&fnl burglaries that has come under our notice for n long time. There seems to be a set of scoundrels who have nilnntpri a. svatpmatic course of a systematic course robbing Tbe wcre carried off at Vincennes, wc have no doubt, contained a great deal of money; and the vexation consequent upon breaking into a regular correspondence will prove nearly equal to the loss of tho money. So far as we could ascertain, no clue of the burglars had been discovered, aud they arc, we presume, enjoying the fruits of their ill-gotten gains. A success of the kind abovo de scribed, will render them bolder, and we may yet have the pleisure of hearing of their incarceration within the .vails of the penitentiary. Hon. Harrison G. Blake, the Re publican candidate, is elected to Congress, from Ohio, by from 1,500 to 2,000, to liil the vacancy occasioned by the death of Hon Cyrus Spink. Suspended. The City Bank, of Racine, Wis., suspended on Monday morning, one week ago. The Racine Journal says bill bolder need not letl uneasy as lucy are amply secured. William Holmes, formerly a reputa ble merchant of Troy, N. Y., who, under the influence of the spiritual affinity doctrines, to which he had become a convert, deserted bis wife two or three months since, has been arrested at Chicago at tho instance o his wife, who wishes to recover her three children whom lie took away with bim. Clippings. A performer on the bass viol, In an ama teur musical association was lately expelled for getting married, matrimony being a base viol-ation of a standing rule of the society. A dentist of New Haven, extracted for a lady under the influence of ether, 20 teeth in ten miuuies. She was unconscious of pain during the performance. A Mr. Timberlake has been mulcted in $ 5,000 in the Kenton Circuit Court, to bind up the broken heart of Miss Ann E. Williams, whom he promised to marry, and failed to keep his word. A passenger train on the Northern railway, a few days since, ran over an intoxicated fellow on tbe track. He was so insensible to tbe magnitude of tbe misfortune as to remark to the condnetor, while he looked at his lacerated limbs, "Thai if too bad; I didn't mean to hinder the train." A child in Boston having been subject to paroxysms of pains for months, an examination resulted in tracing the trouble to an eye tooth. It was accordingly extracted and found to inclose a worm of peculiar appearance, which bad caused all the trouble by its efforts to penetrate to the marrow of the jawbone. At Princeton, Illinois, thtrother Sunday, a coon went into a church during service, and amused himself by making free with the shelter afforded by the crinoline of the ladies, and created a tremendous excitement among slippers and gaiters. The local paper calls a coon in church "running politics into religion." A man named Daniel Stafford stole a pair of oxen near Detroit last week, and in 14 hours from ;he commission of tbe deed, be bad been arrested, tried, convicted, and was on bis way to tbe State Prison under a sentence for three years. A man named Morgan was arrested in Sbelbyville the other day, for setting fire to a house owned by his wile, because she would not consent to mortgage it to raise money for him to "spree" With. Another fellow, named Potter, was arrested for stealing his grandfather's horse. The Buffalo (N. Y.) Pott, a paper favorable to Daniel S. Dickinson for the Presidency, states that the delegation lately appointed to cast the vote of New York in tho Charleston Convention siands divided as follows : Stephen A. Douglas 53 Daniel 8. Dickenson 17 A majority of the delegation, under tbe instructions of the Convention, will cast the whole vote of the State as a unit. Douglas is, therefore, certain of the thirty-five voters of New York at Charleston. The Republicans of Kansas Territo ry have put a lull ticket in the field for State officers, as k lows: Chas Robinson for Governor, end J. P. Root for Lieutenant Governor. B. P. Conway was nominaUd for Congress. The firit ballot election for Slate officer, will take place in December. BffU'l'ho members of the Firu Company in New York, of which Mr Brodcrick was foreman when a rcsi.lent of lhat cily, had a meeting, and took MM table agrlioD in regard to the decease of their old leader. l'he Philadelphia Press estimates I that tho Opposition majority in Penusy lva- ; nia will exceed 20,000 They have a large majority rt' the Lejji mure ami ot tlie .Senators holding over. It is eoiisi.lere.l, l.y the Kst iufoi nicJ, that Senator Iligler a cat is likely to be reruuved from under him at the next election.

Business on the landing was very brisk, and freights arc plenty. fJfQy" We received the following despatch last night, from Billy List : Cairo, lib, Oct. 18. Reporter Journal The Done will be at Evansville Wednesday morning, and proceed to Newburg. She will leave Evansville Thursday, at 1 o'clock, precisely, for Cairo, and all intermediate landings. List. JThe Kate Stsrchet, with Capt. Zack Taylor in command, will be in readiness at 10 o'clock this morning to convey passengers to and from Henderson, with speed, comfort and safety. ffTTbe Ahda is the regular packet for Cannclton to-day, at 10 0 clock, one 13 a good boat, and always gives satisfaction. The Charley liouren left yefterday with a good trip of freight and passengers. The Silver Star will be here this morning from Paducah, ready to return on arrival of the cars. She offers good accom modations to passengers and shippers. We notice that Mr. Sherwood has at last got to work on the levee, pnd we hope he will remain there until a sufficient quan tity of ringbolts are put down for tbe use of touts. F" Wc take the following from the Louisville Journal of the 1 7th : Capt. P. G. ORiley has chartered the tow boat rink arble to take his wharf boat, purchased last week, to Evansville, aud left last evening, commanding himself. We have always heard Capt. O'Riley highly spoken of by river men, and after making his acquaint ance, we are not at all surprised. He is a gentleman in every sense of the word. at?- The K. F. Sass has cone on the ways fit Cincinnati, for repairs'. tW The E. II. Fairchild was advertised to leave Louisville yesterday. It Ehe is w m up to time, she will be here to-day. flaT The. following are tbe particulars concerning tbe sinking of the 6tcamer Ma renan, as taken from the St. Louis Repub lic. .1 : The steamer Marengo, Captain McCallam, bound from Pittsbnrgh for this port, with a large assorted cargo, struck a snag and sunk at Roziera landing, seventy miles below ibis city. The accident occurred at four o.clock. p. u , on Friday. The officers of the Minnehaha saw the Marengo strike, and soou ascertained that she was in trouble The ili.wt h'iha, being about a mile lieliind, soon came up, aud was hailed by the Maren no for assistance. The sinking boat was run out on a bar on the Illinois shore, and was a considerable time in finding a resting place on the hot torn, which proves that the break in her hull cannot be very large. She struck for ward of the toilers on the starboard side, and eventually settled down in nine feet water astern and seven feet at her bow. She lies perfectly straight, and, it is thought, can to raised without difficulty Tho Minnehaha took oil uer passengers about forty in number, cabin nnd deck and twenty head of horses and five wagons all of which were landed here in safety. A large amount of moving plunder was also gftved and brought up by the Minnehaha Star' The St. Louis Republican, of the I'.'th, contains the following particulars concerning tbe burning of tbe steamer Lru nette: At between two and three o'clock yester day morning, the shades of Bloody Island wcre illuminated by a steamboat fire. The burning boat was the old nnd well known limnettr, which commenced her career in the Illinois river, aud ended it in the St. Louis and Cairo trade. Tbe llrunette had been idle for some weeks past, a portion of which time was spent on the ways at d.rondelet, where she underwent repairs. The buruingof the Brunette was, without doubt, the work of an incendiary, and had been premeditated for some time. Tbe Brunette was atout seven years old, and almost worth less as a steamboat. Her latter days were spent in the Chester and Cairo trade, and in towing and jobbing. She was owned by Philip Walther, and, we understand, was insured for $5,000. The shoe trade of the United Slntes is much larger than most people are nware of ; in numbers, there would be six or eight millions of pairs worn annually ; the quality, it is generally admitted, is of an inferior grade. There are some exceptions, and we are glad to be able to inform the public that at Hcuhks', they can, for a very moderate price, secure a very choice article. NEW ADVERTISE!
