MONDAY MOUSING. OCTOBER 17 The Cincinnati Gazette gives an ac- ( j3 count of the wife of an engineer in St. Louis, who awoke on Tueaday morning last in her usual good health and cheerfulness. Suddenly she was seen faltering in her gait, and presently to fall on the door in a halfreclining position. She gasped for breath once or twice and was a corpse. A postmortem examination, by Dr. Chas. dpinzig, revealed a most rare lession ; it was a rent in the heart, which allowed the blood contained in that organ to accumulate in the sac which invests the heart, and this also was raptured. She had, in a physical sense of the word, died heart-broken an expression only true physiologically, for she wa3 greatly beloved by her husband and they lived very happily together. The Vincennes Gazette tells'a good story on one of the voters at that precinct, whose name is withheld. The voter came to the polls, handed his ballot to the inspector and turned to walk off, when he was interrogated upon his vote for or against the calling of a Constitutional Convention. He replied : 4 D n the convention, the party had a convention in June at McClure's, and nominated candidates I couldn't go for, and I am agin' any more very soon," That is a similar reply to the same ques tion by a voter In this county. When asked If he was in favor of a convention, he said " No, a convention was held at Babytown, the other day, that was a disgrace to the party, and I am opposed to all conventions." Bp, A correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette, says there is a silly report in circulation, that a'number of leading Democratic politicians of New York, now in session in that city, are about to come on to Washington to tender the support of the New York delegation at Charleston, to Buchanan, in case he wiM reconsider his determination not to be a candidate. This is gammon. The New Yorkers know he is out of the question, and, until recently, they have been Douglas men, but are not now so sure of the Little Giant's availability. BP. A serious fire occurred at Indianapolis on Thursday. A large planing mill, together with some $2,000 or $3,000 worth of lumber, was entirely consumed. The mill and lumber were the property of a Mr. Hill, who estimates his loss at fully $8,000. The firemen had great difficulty in saving the surrounding property. The papers of that city express much regret at not having a steam engine. The Atlas says Evansrille has set their city an example, which should not be overlooked. We trust it may be a long time before the services of our new engine will be brought into requisition, but that time will have to come before we are entirely satisfied as to the advantages of a steam fire engine in a small place. Were we to guess as to the cause of the great destruction of property at the fire above mentioned, wo should say it was because the fire company in whose neighborhood it occurred was not in service with their engine. , Tiie Rev. Abram Payne, who had a discussion with Parson Brownlow, in Philadelphia, some time last winter, is anxious to bsrfe another bout with the Parson, and has chnllemged him fur another discussion. Mr. Drowulow replied to the challenge as follows ; 44 1 aui pleased to learn, trout your late .-hallenge. that you wish to have our discussion OTW again, as from this I may legitimately infer that neither you nor your friends are satisfied with what passed at Philal. iphia. If I should ever recover my speit , 1 will take great pleasure in putting yon isrongh again, at as many points as you may desire; but if I am compelled, through bodily infirmity, to give up this pleasant toil, I will carry with me into my comparative seclusion the proud consciousness of having, in my day, borne the heat and burden of the day in fighting two of the most God-forsaken organizations ever known to this country Abolition and Democracy ! And when I come to the evening of life, when my work is well nigh done, and can see the downfall of these two organizations, I can with beautiful serenity exclaim, in the language of old Simeon, 444 Lord, now lettest tbou(thy servant depart in peace, for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.' " The Electiom is the State. We make the following summary of the election news .n this State, from the Indianapolis Journal: " The Republicans gain heavily in tho counties of Marion, Hendricks, Carroll. White, Miami, Morgan, Johnson, Bartholomew, Jennings, Tipton, Cass, Montgomery, Clay, Vigo, Shelby, Knox and Sullivan. The Democrats gain in Boone, Putnam, Howard, Wayne and Rush. In most of the counties, hut little attention was paid to party lines, the people voting for the men who they thought would make the best officers. The new convention project was beaten terribly. fThe National Intelligencer denies the statement that it has entered into an arrangement to support Edward Bates for the Presidency. It says : As we have heretofore, so shall we now abide the voice of our brave party, firm still, we hope, however reduced, and share its fortunes whatever they be." The tone of the Intelliycneer was certainly calculated to excite the supposition that it was thus engaged. Ir It is rumored in New York that the late Senator Broderick, befbre the duel, made a will in which he leaves all his MBKj to GayWesyw hribngnre aLrr of WPolice Gazette, Porter Spirit of the Times, kc. e Election im Vioo. The total number of votes cast, was 2888. The average opjiosition majority, is 287. One of the candidates succeeded by only three vote. There were C24 votes cast for calling a convention ind 1 828 against it.

Who infored the Enquirer that bo 1 . r a n , i . ca communication of A. B. was mccftmwitj detained from publication in oar paper. A a we pretend to be the proper judge of what necessary and unnecessary in regard to our business, it shows a certain amount of impudence, to say the least of it, for uny one J unacquainted with our affairs to assert that a communication was unnecessarily with-' held. Edge Tools. Wo had shown us yesterday one of the most beautiful specimens of edge tools we ever beheld. What enhanced its value, in our eyes, was the fact that it was a sample of the skill of our own mechanics. The tool in question was a magnificent steel hatchet, made by Messrs. J. C. k J. G. Surra, at their manufactory, on Main, between Seventh and Eighth street.. We should judge from its looks, and the quality of the material of which it is composed, that it was worth about a dozen of the hatchets we ordinarily bny of the hardware stores, which are made in the Eastern States. The Messrs. Smith seem to have all they n do, and we are not surprised at it, when we thcxn tarn out srJcn specimens of cntierr Qur mechanics and farmers will greatly consult their own interests by patronising this enterprising firm, and buy tools which are not likely to prove of no value. We fear, however, that our friends will injure their business by making tools that will never break or wear out. They should be careful on that point. .There has always been a great inconvenience suffered by ladies and tailors, who manufacture clothing for their families and the public, in not being able to find, in any store in the city, an adequate supply and assortment of trimmings. At Hughes' they can find any articles of tailors' trimmings that their work requires. Be sure and give him a call. Lost or Stolen. On Wednesday, Oct. 5th, at the Fair Grounds, from a sorrel horse in a sulky, one set of fine buggy har ness. Any person knowing anything of the same, will be suitably rewarded by leaving the same at the Sherwood House. 21. Bishop Ames Roi :kd. The Galena, Illinois Gazette, states that on Saturday night a burglar entered the house of J. N Waggoner, of that place, where Bishop Ames was visiting, and robbed the Rev gentleman's room of his clothes and a satchel containing $100. A Notorious Rowdy IE Limbo. A well known ruffian yclept, "Buffalo Bill," made three desperate assaults on a man named Marshall, on Friday night lost. Marshall laid his information before Justice McBride, and a warrant was placed in the hands of James B. Evans, of the special police. Mr. Evans proceeded to the den of Pat. Hughes, where he found " Buffalo Bill " in bed, and while making the arrest, one of Bill's co vey's made a tbrcai, but being convinced bf a word from the officer that discretion was the better part of valor, he lowered his crest, aud made no farther demonstrations The vagrant being too drunk for trial, was committed to the lock-up, to sober oil, and on Saturday mortiing tvas brought before the magistrate. At the office, he becalm very unruly, aud made an attempt to es cape; und in so doinpr, jumped out of the frying pan into the lire. Officers Hull k Sherwood intercepted his flight, and " Bui falo Dill wus mulcted in the sum of $20 and cost for his trial. Bill not having yet recovered from the late financial pauic, fouud himself bard up, aud, seqciTUR, will repose in limbo for thirty days. 41 Buffalo Bill " is oue of the greatest villains between Louisville and New Orleans. He is the special property of Hangman, Satan k Co., and the sooner the Devil gets his own, the hotter it will he for the commu nity. ffBh. Several vexatious errors occurred in Saturday morning 's paper, which we regret very much. Errors annoy publishers far more than any one else. In the communication signed by " Experience," the fifth line should read " Experience" will wager the amount you received,' kc., instead of "he re'ed.'' Inthe fifth line of the second paragraph, the hand should give place to the word 14 tool. " We also wrote out a couple of notices one of Divide service at Locust street Church, and one of Mis Hewlett's lertur at Marble Hail,- but in some wy tin y got misplaced and failed to make their appeal ance in the paper. rhese errors annoy us exceedingly, bnt we cannot new help tl em. Sollivxh CounTY. The Texrc Haute Hrpress says it was reported in tliitt nlv that tbe entire Republican ticket was elected in old Sullivan oa Tuesday We think so remarkable a change in politics as this would indicate, can hardly be ioasible. 19 The betting on the county election, io Indianapolis, was quite extensive.
