John Letcher is in a very dangerous condition from an attack of erysipelas, a disease to which, for some time back, he has been subject, bnt which now is more formidable thin usual. Mr. Letcher is at his home at Lexington. The Bridgeport Advertiser understands thai Mr. P. T. Barnum intends to improve East Bridgeport by setting out shade trees along the highway. Mr. Barnum has advertised for one thousand trees to enable him to carry out his plans. Judge Jewett, President of the Steubenville and Indiana road, had a foot badly crushed while he was getting on the cars at Cadis station, on Thursday last. Dr. Nathan Meyer, of Richmond. Va.. a botanic physician by profession, having been i bitten by a rattlesnake, had resort to the usual whisky remedy, but foolishly suffered himself to be bled very copiously, in consequence of which be soon died. Dr. Roasvally, of New Orleans, who wished to reopen the dead body of Dr. Graham, into which he alleged bis ring had fallen, but accepted the value of the lost jewel as a compromise, and was arrested for obtaining money under false pretences, has been acquitted. Col. Thos. Henry, formerly of the U. S. Army, but mor3 recently of Walker's Nicaraguau Army, challenged Col. Frank Anderson, at New Orleans, last week. The latter refused to fight, on the ground that he had never injured Col. Henry. ffcT A woman was arrested in Philadelphia city on Sunday morning, grossly intoxicated, and holding in her arms the body of a dead infant, to which she had given birth the evening previous, in an often lot. $ff A young man stated that, at one period ot bis life, he had been nearly betrayed into the principles of infidelity, " bnt. ' he added, " there was one argument iu favor of Christianity which I could never" refute the consistent conduct of my own father!' t&T The New York correspondent of the New Orleans Crescent thinks that the Hon. W. C. Rives, of Va., has a chance of being nominated as the Opposition candidate for the Presidency, and of being elected. 86? The Washington States, a Douglas organ, earnestly condemns the conduct of the New York City Supervisors in the appointment of Registrars. tvv The union of the Opposition by means of a mutu.tl abandonment of distinctive differences, is a thing now apparently determined upon at least so far as the leaders of some of the element? are concerned. The New York Tribune publishes a letter of the Hon. Edward Bates, of Missouri, to the Whigs of Lexington, in thai State, which probably Nys down the present shape of the coalition doctrine in a way that may be considered authoritative. Ci. Enquirer. The Enquirer reads the doom of its p:trty in the prospect of a union of all the Opposition upon some conservative man. Let but that union be consummated and the knell of bogus Democracy will be sounded. It makes but little difference who the man may be, if the people u-iitc on him, the country is sa.ed from the clutches of the vampyres who are now sucking its best blood. Democratic Modesty. The A'e- Yorker Dcmokrat, having published a portrait anil biography of Fernando Wood, was accused by the Abend-Zeihmg, on Tuesda', of having sold out to Wood. The Dcmokrat of yesterday indignantly repels the charge, and aays that the likeness and eulogium were an advertisement. Mr. Schwedlcr, the publisher of the Dcmokrat states, ovtir his own signature, that he will show to who choose3 to call, Wood's ie ter zinc him to translate and insert tny one life. The note is in the well-known band and dignified style of the late Mayor : permits the Demokrat to translate and print " my portrait and biography from the Sund,ty Courier" for fifty dollars, and states that I hall expect to see it in the daily, weekly and Sunday paper." Fob Old Waios. Edward Bates of Missouri, has written a letter in answer to an invitation to address a meeting of the Whigs of Lafayette county, in which, while he commends the effort to re-organize the Whig party, he says: " But it H not strong enough to act separately and alone. To accomplish any real good lor the country and for the cause of truth and freedom, it must co-operate with the other elements ot opposition to an Administration and a party which have divided the nation into sectional fractions, and have destroyed the peace anl confidence of the country, and endangered its integrity. Suh co-ojieration demands no sacrifice of Whig principles not a tittle. On the contrary, it requires the exercise cf the best attributes of a genuine Whip tliepatriollsm which would lead us willingly to sacrifice our jer3onal prejudices aud prepossessions (if we have any) for the public good the courage which wonld enable M when fully convinced of the right, to maintain it against all odds and the moderation and forbearance (living and letting live freely tolerate minor differences of opinion among brethren co-acting in thesanieeause An old parsonaijc, in lYtwporL where lr. nopkins lived, rikJ now iiuiuurtalired br Mrs. Stowe? in her Minister's Wsotng, is now the residence of half a dozen gentlemen of color, with their wives and young ebonies.
