FRIDAY MORNING. OCTOBER 14 I ,TIe" Duello. It is'a UmenUbte fact, 'dtsccrnable to an j
obserrant mind, that religion,, morality, and brtovnshirv on -all-important queitions, refined seMibUitfef are on the wane. The wbeneTer a majority pmeni 'would call for pnlpit bows respectfolly as it passes rice dad ita?h township being entitled to a cerin the regalia of secular power.' The editorial nunibeTfjf ToU7establihed upon an tripod, for the sake el popular influence, suitable i basis, aid "entitled to no more' or connives at the unrestrained exercise of the je3Sj whether represented in convention by grosser passions, - or prostitutes itself to one Deniocrator one w hundred. ; The chair the accomplishment of base ends The po- ea Itsek-VSaid that none other than litical hydra, now dominant over everything- mQfa9i Gatitt fa j on the table, else in the land, after being gorged for WM j,' Vrjcouid possibly be twenty-five years' on . the Tilest offal, now enlcrt&!ned until that was disposed of. The turns with disgust from a regimen saroring clia could noi kad would not countenance of anything but dissimulation, hypocrisy, issues. Vhe motion tolay on the
selfishness or servility.; It3 golden .rule is the lex talionis and the "code of honor," and its annals are written in blood, from the murder of Alexander Hamilton to the latest butchery in California, where the judicial ermine is stained with the noblest blood of the Senate chamber. -The challenge to deadly combat is now the dernier argument, and the brave . man who has for years boldly and manfully re sisted the aggressions of an infatuated sectionality, . finds .himself. ; assailed Jj a foe whose garments are already dyed in blood ; and no matter how unequal the. contest, he rashes to the death to rescue, his reputation for courage from the imputation of cowardice.'. In the meridian of his usefulness, and at a moment when his cxample.wonld" have I crownedhim with-honor, and carried I wcigwy xnuuence agaws. a aepioraoie ctii, his moral courage' fails 'him,-and he yields 1 tothe imperious diction of the cut-throat I "code". . j i-.. .. i ..Ait Even whCe the cry of popular indignation is I going up from the Union, while the pall of I desolation hangs over the State whose I brightest star has been extinguished in the I morning of his promise, there are those I who view the murder of faenator Brodenclt I as merely the unfortunate consummation of a moral necessity, sencr-wat ice w" I blood should flow than the " code" be dis- I honored. But a single human life is not all that is involved in the " affair of honor." I In the Terry-Broderick duel, for. Instance, I what becomes of the Honorable Chief Jus-1 tice, who has so flagrantly violated the laws of which he' was the high exponent ? The scaffold -msy be cheated of its victim, but the branded murderer, with reeking hands, will find the curse 6f Cain in the maledictions ' of the1 heartsr he , has 'desolated ; in the cup of remorse which will' cling, I ever fall, to his lips; in the divestiture, and degtadation from all the position and Influ ence be ever enjoyed, and in the condemnation of a community whose moral sense he has so deeply wounded. , Communicated. Mr. llardtu'a Card. EoiToa JouaxAL In your daily of yes. I terdayyou kindly offer mo space in' the j columns of your paper for the publication of my official report of the proceeding of the V Darling Convention." I am most happy in accepting the same, and herewith transmit to you the manuscript. You know j a regularly organized convention is never folly played out until the Secretary's report thereof has been given to the public; and the absence of such a report, where the same has been required, ia prima facie evidence of that officer's dereliction of duty. But such is not the case in this instance, although several days have elapsed since the adjournment .of the' convention. On the contrary, tha thing wa3 promptly gotten up upon my part, and forwarded, first to the Volktbote, and then to the Enquirer, which ha3 unfortunately operated to withhold its appearance, as the editors of both these papers declined to publish it, but each declined .from very, different motives, if I am allowed to judge from their conversation to me. And hence you perceive why it is I so highly appreciate your proffered kindness. The report itself is not extraordinary in anything, but, of all the editorial fraternity of thiscity, you, alone, seem complacently disposed to let the convention run its length,' and also to afford me an opportunity to give this additional evidence of my unalterable determination faithfully and impartially to discharge the duties of every accepted trust, be the responsibility whatever it may. For this, please have the goodness to oblige me again by accepting my sincere thanks. ' Very respectfolly and troly yours, " I. . .! q yf nARDIX. At Mr. A. Darling's, in Perry township, on the 8th insL, a number of Democrats (between forty and sixty) convened, pursuant to a call for a meeting of the Democ racy of anderburgu couuty. On motion of Mr. Gavitt, Hon John Law was called to the chair, and Messrs. Lunkcnheimer and Hardin were elected Secretaries. "' Mr. Denby moved the following: Resolved, That all Democrats of this county be and tbey are hereby authorized and in vited to act as delegates at the Democratic State Convention, at Indianapolis, next Jan uary;' and Retolved, That this meeting now adjourn tine die. Mr. Gavitt moved to lay said resolutions on the, table. Discussion ensued. Messrs, Gavitt and Whittlesey speaking in favor of the latter kotc, and Messrs. Denby and Rudd in opposition. The question being called for, Mr Denby moved that the vote tbereoVbe taken by townships. The chair ruled that the motion wa3 out of order, Said that the motion to lay on the table must hare ihe precedence, as it bad been made first. Mr. Gavitt's motion to table prevailed. - N- ' ;- - J Mr. Rudd then moved that the delegates be chosen from the townships (upon whatever equitable ratio might 1 agreed) by township action, each township naming its own delegates. The chair ruled the motion out of order. Said that the meeting ' bad decided upon three and three it must be. ' "' . Dr. Walker then moved for a reconsideration of that rote, v In stating his motion, the Doctor said his object was to put a better face on the proceedings; ' whether the contention was packed or not He said a committee would keep upappearances iter " Thechaired" tie Doctor's' 'moUon out order, noon the eround that it was not maje before the Committee was appointed. After debate on both sides, voted down. The vote stood 11 to 17. The Committee then reportei fa following names, viz.: . John l,W a. T. Whittlesey, Geo. B. It was also announced . that, by the prece dent just established, the nominating committee cannot act as delegates. . Acquiesced in by all. , , . " , ', Next arose a call for all who regarded Mr Douglas as their first choice for President, to take one side of the house, and the Gen. Lane men the other. N Owing to the rapidi ty with which the chair decided the pre ponderance in numbers to be In faTor of Mr. Douglas, and as no names were called, or reckoning made, or numbers given as the result of the vote,' to say nothing of the noise and confusion, no approximation to accuracy can be found as to the precise rela tive strength of the two sides. Rudd, Dr. John T. Walker, Denby, L. C. Stinson, Hardin, and others, voted for Gen. Lane as their first choice. Ben. Stinson, Whittlesey. Kirkpatrick, Richard Raleigh, Gavitt, and others, for Mr. Douglas. The names of other voters not noted at the time. On motion, it was unanimously Retolved, That the Secretaries of this meeting furnish the daily papers of Eransville, and the State Sentinel, each, with a copy of the proceedings of this meeting for publication. It. was now here announced that Hon. Cyrus L. Dunham had arrived, and, on motion, a committee was appointed to wait upon and invites him to address the meeting. Accepting the invitation, Mr. Dunham was immediately introduced, . and occupied about one and a half hours in a very interesting speech, replete with arguments and Democracy. On motion of Dr. Geo. B. Walker, it was unanimously . Rttohed, That the thanks of this meet ing be returned to Hon. Cyrus L. Dunham for the entertainment he has afforded us by his eloquent, patriotic, and truly Democratic speech, made before us to-day. The meeting now adjourned. G. WHardi.v, iSrc'y.
