EVANSVILLE, IND.
OCTOBER 12 i WEDNESDAY MORNING Tor Judge of tha Fifteenth Judicial Circuit. JOHN PITCHER, of Posey. WM. F. PARRETT, of Warrick. Frosacutiag Attorney Cor the iini. JAMES ddAXcCLIX, of VaaJerbarjhDemocratic Voeabulum. A' celebrated traveler recently attempted to make a glossary of theTangoagea apoken by some of tlie Indian tribes through which he wu passing, to facilitate his intercourse with them. He would hare succeeded to his entire satisfaction but for one insuperable difficulty, and that was, that they appeared to attach no definite meaning to anything they uttered. Under one set of circumstances, certain symbolic sounds their whole language was incoherent seemed to indicate one thing, and under others the same sounds implied something else, perhaps the rery rererse of the former, so that after a fruitless effort to reduce their lan abanguage to writing he was compelled to don the idea in despair. These poor unlettered aborigines might find their paralel in our own enlightened institutions. The pandects of the Administration possess a wonderful adaptation to time, place and circumstance; they are admirably catholic in their applicalon. An ex cathedra promulgation goes out, passes from extreme to extreme of the land, enters contention, caucus, and conclave : finds the local sentiment of one section in conflict with the local institution of another ; white principles here, black principles there ; lines straight, broken and crooked; surfaces eren and uneven; actions diametrically antagonistic, yet, without alterm!? in the least the vhusiquc or tne p a-T-T-ty, the imaculate party, it is received harmoniously passed on to the next neighbor in tbe same way; and by dovetailing and moulding its plastic form into every variety of shape, to harmonize with everything that may have been engrafted into sectional democracy, it returns to headquarters to report the party a unit, and the great principle (?) of Democracy immutable. Even in the national legislature, where extremes meet, the conservative Democrat of the North, whose conservatism consists in conceding everything to the South for the sake of preserving tbe Union, works "cheek by jowl" with the conservative Democrat of the South, whose conservatism consists in conceding nothing to the North in consideration of his great forbearance in sparing the Union. The true vernacular of orthodoxy meaus indefinitely everything everywhere, and nothing anywhere. Water and oil won't mix ; pour in your alkali however, and the non-affinity is remov ed and you produce soft soap a slippery substance that facilitates tLe pasaage of objects, and quickens the tardiness of their motion. So tbe truth of the North and facts of the South, tending toward opposite directions, would militate sadly against tbe prorcsiiveueis of tho party the harmonious umi, but the alkaline catholicon, poured fium aa empty vial, labelled "Democracy,'' instantly converts the miscellaneous dements some of which are very hltby, like old soap grease into lubricating saponaceous gelatine, and the pasty glides smoothly aioDg over hills and hollows, crooked lines and straight ones, so easily, 1 bo harmoniously, that tbe load of office-seekers it carries, declare it to be the most delightful vehicle they ever travelled in on their road to fame and fortune.' 1 As an instance of the diverse character of the ingredients which are blended into bar! mony by the miraculous virtues of the contents of tbe empty vial, we select the following declarations from a Northern and Southern pronunciamento, respectively. Want of space precludes our presenting more than a mere specimen brick from each. Tbe free and accepted Democrats of Indiana in convention assembled, got off the following, among other resolutions : j Resolved, That the Democratic party, in all its precedents, is pledged against the revival of the Slave Trade, and that we heartily deprecate all efforts to resuscitate that odium, let them come from whatever source they may. . - '.. About ' the same time the other end of i this harmonious unit, souring and fermenting under a Southern sun in the State of Mississippi 1 Resolved, That non-slaveholding States should rightly have no voice in determining whether it would be to the interests of the slavebolding States to bare a greater or less number of slaves. This should be purely question of State policy, and the General Government transcended its powers, we are bound to believe, when it presumed to prevent tbe importation of slaves from Africa. Now in Indiana the former resolution embodies a portion of the definition of Demooracy. In Mississippi the Utter resolutioa embodies a portion of the definition of Domocracy. Yet they are one and the same; immutable; a harmonious unit. ! In the name of all the lexicographers that ever labored for a pure language ; in the name of the man who could'nt make tbe Indian glossary; what are we to understand when we are exhorted to join tbe p-a-r-r-ty and become Democrats? We can conceive of but one remedy for the difficulty; that is to do like the Almanac makers, have a sep arate Democratic glossary, adapted to each degree or latitude, prefaced with the blank form of an oath, in which the neophyte binds himself to shut his eyes and open bis mouth, and ask no questions, when he goes abroad, in other words to receive everything ii genuine that has Democracy branded on the wrapper, signed "Jas. Buchanan," whose signature it .is not forgery to imitate. j 0, Miss Louise Rosienkiewicz informs the Cincinnatians that she will instruct pu pils in music. There are two or three operas, a hornpipe, polka, and highland fling in that n.tnic ! The last two sjllables are pronounced by an ordinary sneeze.
Stzax Fim E5CIXI- The Council, on Monday morning; decided to purchase Mr. Latta's steam nre engine. They give the gentleman $5,000 for the same ; one-third
payable in 30 days ; one-third in six months; and the balance in 13 months. This is a bold step, but we presume the ground has been carefully canvassed by the gentlemen who made the appropriation. To make this purchase effectual, there will be at least 1,000 feet of new hose very large in size to be bought; at least two horses; a new, stout hose reel, and a house in which the whole is to be preserved. To depend on a livery stable for horses, will rob the machine of one-half its value. In the hurry and bustle of a conflagration, bells ringing, men running to and fro, we will venture that there is hardly a hostler in any of our stables that would get the horses harnessed and hitched up in less than half an hour. Then there would be a difficulty in managing strange horses. Not one horse in five, ordinarily, would deport himself properly amid the excitement of a fire. We think it will prove absolutely necessary that horses be purchased by the city, before tne steam engine can oe maae arauaoie. engine can Horses will need an attendant and no small quantity of corn, hay and oats. We will hare to secure the semccs of an engineer and fireman. If Mr. Latta was unwilling to permit a trial of his engiae under tbe management of our most experienced and careful practical engineers and machinists, we may infer how useful he thinks the engine will engine win prove under the management of one who has no experience as an engineer, whatever. Mr. Uasxt proposes to run tne engine tor one year for nothing. If the old adage, " what costs but little is not worth much," hold3 goodj we wm conclude lhat the fire engine will not be attended to as well as it ought. Mr. Hakiy's zeal will cool long before the end of the year, and the Council will be compelled to employ an engineer at last. With the engine in one place, the engineer in another, the horses in a third, and a fire man anywhere he may be found, the engine will be put to work, we doubt not, with much promptitude and certainty. That Mr. Latta's engine is a compiicatcd pitcecf work, any one can 8ce. That a very slight difficulty in the working or any portion or the machinery would seriously injure-if not entirely stop-the engine, is apparent to tne most stupid. A man should be cool, cautious, full of expe dients, and, above all, thoroughly compre hend the philosophy and practical uses of every part of the machinery comprising an engine, before he is fully competent to take charge of one. We insist that it requires more skill to properly manage a steam en gine amid the excitement consequent upon a large fire, than it does to run almost aoy other class of machinery. iiaviag purcnasea me eugiue, naviug bought the hose and hose-reel, and horses to pull them, having secured the services of a good engineer and firemen, will the Council stop there, or will it make additional appropriations for an engine to be placed on the outskirts of the city? If a good hand engine is also purchased, will not tbe city be as deep iu the mud, financially, at the close of the year, as she was in the mire at tbe beginning ? Besides, we venture this prediction: If the Lamasco company gets a first class en gine, and a first-rate engine is also given to the Franklin company, four-fifths of all tbe fires that break out in the city will be put out by the hand engines. We trust time will not verify the truth of our prediction to the disparagement of steam. But while we have frankly given our fears as above thai the steam engine will not prove a profitable investment, with the Enquirer " we hope it may prove a good in vestment on the part of the city fathers." vwa . a i nere is no question, Dnt wnat as a mere extinguisher of fires, after the engine is once located at a cistern, the steam engine is superlatively better than any hand engine. As a proof of its power we trust we shall immediately witness a reduction in the rates of lusurance. ' In addition to this. we feel a just pride in the reflection that our young city is the pioneer city of. Indi ana in introducing steam Erev engines. , It will give us notoriety and importance abroad, which,' of itftlf, is valuable. Tbe enterprise of our city in the inauguration of these engines, may attract tho attention of foreign capitalists and they be induced to bring their means and invest with us. Whenever we are aroused at night by the appalliug cry of fire, and hear the clatter of bells mingled with the shouts of au excited multitude, we confess that the shrill whistle of our steam fire engine will fall pleasantly on tbe ear, and we may then have occasion to pay tribute to tbe foresight of our city fathers which turned out to be so much lt ter than our own. We all know this to De true, ana are, or ought to be, anxious to secure the counterparts of our friends while they are blessed with health; and in doing so we should be careful to eo to an artist that makes not only the nicest pictures, but those that are also most durable. Entertaining these views, we looked through the new foundry and machine shop of Messrs. Jous Ivissos & Co., yesterday, with pleas ure and admiration. These gentlemen have just received their finishing machinery from Massachusetts. Their lathes,', boring' ma chine, and bolt machine, excel anythingtof the kind we ever saw. For beauty of fin ish, smoothness in running, and durability of build, we doubt if their superiors, or even equals, can be found in the West. One of the best indications of a good workman is to be found in the quality of bis tools ; and if this rule is applied to Messrs. Ivissos k Co., and holdi good, their workmanship will be of a superior grale. The propne are to te found at their posts, witll 6lccves rolled up, ready either to do a job of work, or politely show an inquiri Dg stranger through their premises. . . . , Ret. William M. Daily. The trial of this centleman excited considerable interest at the Conference. Rev. S,T. Gillett, aided by J. T. Noble, conducted the prosecutiou. The Rev. Dr. defended himself, assisted by Ileq. E.II. Sabin. It was rumored that Revs. W. C. Smith and C. B. Davidson acted in the caDacitv of private counselors. Rev. Mr. Gillett conducted the prosecution with remarkable tact'and spirit, and won the approval of all bis'brcthren of the conference. The result of the trial has been announced before. Jgy" We are informed by Mr. II ex by Babcoce, that his house was also broken into n Sunday morning, and some $30 in money taken out of his pocket. If there is no other way of stopping these midnight depredations, the council should appoint a night police immediately. '-' ' IIE810NAT105 of JcDGK Swax.
