Who Saved the Country What Ltd to the Capture of Andre Motet Shervood and Jack Fetnton Merita Monument as much -at William, Paulding, and Van Wert A Shot from the Vulture Lodged in an Oak Tree on Teller $ Point, now in the J'oMsetsion of the Writer, J"c. Every writer ujon American history, when he arrives at thi account of the raj ture of Andre, lays down the thread of his narrative to cxjKitinte on the patriotism of thnt noble little band, who, regardless of goldeu promised, retained the unfortuuate spy, aud saved their country from impending ruin. We do not desire to undervalue their triolein nud services, although we have soiuetiioej asked ourselves the questionsfor what puriiose were these three men stationed upon the roadside ? Did they go forth from their homes in the morning with a desire or an intention of saring their country? Had they any authority to stop travelers on the high roads? If they bad twert patriots, would they not have joined the Contiueutal army, instead of lounging upon the roadsides ? There is a link, in the chain of circumstauces which led to the capture of Andre that has been omitted in previous details of this momentous event. Who has ever heard of Moses Saerwood and Jack Peterson, who had as much to do with this circumstance as WillianH, Paulding, and Van Wert, whose names have become as familiar as household words? Jack Peterson was truly a patriot. He was a mulatto, and served in the Continental Army. At one time he was captured and sent to New York as a prisoner, where, with other Americans, he su tiered iu the notorious ( Prison Ship," until, by a skillful strategem, he effected his escape. One dark night he managed to tie a bundle of clothes to his bead, and by stealth crept to the chains, which held the ship to the anchor. He slipped quietly and unobserved down iuto the water, and soon reached Carlos Hook, by swimming. He traveled cautiously by night, and after many privations, euffcriugs, and hair-breadth cs capes, reac hed his home on ibe banks of tho Croton river. The above incident ialgivcn on the authority of Captain Totter, a former resident of Sing Sing, who is a nephew of Moses Sherwood, referred to in the following sketch of Jack Peterson, which was published a few years ago in the Westches ter Herald, by Caleb Koscoe, who was ever on the alert for facts and iucidents which illustrate or develop the history of the American Revolution. It will be eecn by this sketch, which is worthy of republication a hundred times, that Jack served in the army of his country until be was honorably discharged, and that it was pure patriotism that led Peterson and Sherwood to attack the enemy of superior numbers and power. It was not three to one, but two against many! It was this boldnerS and patriotism that thwarted Andre in his design to embark upon the Vulture with his death-warrant of American liberty. In all future time let the name of Peterson and Sherwood be shouted in the same sentence with those of Williams, Paulding, and Van Wert. For many years after this great evcut, Peterson was accustomed to point out to his sons and others one of the cannon balls lodged in an oak tree, on Teller's Point, which was fited from the Vulture ou this occusiou. . A few years ago this tree, being very much decayed, was cut down, the ball removed aud kept by Wm. Underbill, of Teller a Poiut, who nut long since presented it to the writer of the present article. JACK PETE-40N. John Peter3ou, a colored man, (mulatto,) departed thi? life October 2, at his late residence in the village of Peekskill, aged one i l.uuilied and three years. Peterson was bioulit up iu the family or Job Sherwood, I il this county, whose sou, Isaac Sherwood, i. m . t S .a a i hail entereu trie cohiineuiaj Army as a !
