A long contest for tlie cVction. of Speaker is apprehended sit the eo.nnenceuent of the next session. M r. FItlir riilge, of Tennessee, it is said, hsu no iispirations for the place. ' It 13 conceded tliat tLc choice must bo ma.le from the South American members. Winter Davis, if re-elected, will le a candidate. Davis would undoubtedly give the Republicans the control of the best committees, which i3 the particular thing they desire. The probability i3, that the struggle tor the Speakership will be as protracted as that which preceded the election of Winthrop, and be determined ultimately by a resort to the plurality rule. Mr. Forney, of the Phil adelphia Press, is a candidate for Clerk of the House. Bga, Hon. Robert Dale Owen's work on Spiritualism i3 in press and will shortly be published. The New York Herald says " we have a bookseller's pamphlet announc ing a forthcoming work, "of what is nsu ally called the supernatural," and bearing the ghostly title of "Footfalls on the Bonn dary of Another World, by Robert Dale Owen, formerly member of Congress, and American Minister at Naple3." The subject is allied to spiritualisra, but is addressed to all the various forms of voluntary spiritual manifestations, instead of those evoked by table tippers, rappers, and other mediums. And so another late prominent politician 13 added to the list of public men who have gone over in the flesh to that world of spir its to which Gov. TalmaJge, Judge Edmonds and a host of others have been car ried away." JCQf In Pittsburg, they have a very rigid Sunday law, which forbids traveling or riding on the Sabbath under a penalty of twenty dollars, or imprisonment in the House of Correction for six days. Last Sunday, the Mayor gave orders to the police to enforce the law to the letter. During the day, the officers obtained the names of the owners and drivers of sundry carriages; in which -persons were conveyed to and from Church. Among those returned, was a minister of the gospel, a judge, a legislator, aud several of our prominent business men. These gentlemen think it a hard case that such respectable citizens as they, should lc made snbjects of the law. Tli Com and Hog Crop. The C:ncinnati Price Current gives a summary of the intelligence from its Correspondents iu the hoj and corn regions of the West. 1 1 says : The corn crop. in Ohio is much tatter than was expected a month ago, and, generally speaking, is a. fall average, taking into consideration the greater breadth of land planted. In Indana the crop Li excellent, and in all the' Wabash conntry ii unusually heavy, the ears being longer, and tatter filled than usual. Indeed, we have no complaints from any portion of that State; in all parte the crop appears to be satisfactory." A good rnp ot wt&t bas been sown, and it looks writ.- " In Illinois, except from a few counties iu the XuTiheiu jv.rhoa of the State, where it was injured by frost, the crop is fair, in many phice3 fcCol, aud ia allgooJ. rw-h turn land?, heavy. It in not yet fully matured, but the prespnt u cither is very favorable. It 13 now nearly out of danger, and generally exceeJa the expetation of the former. In Mi3onri. the crop is prtttr good, though like Iowa, we have not heard from many points in this State. .. In Kentucky, the crop is represented a fair average, and is fully matured, the quality being excellent. In Virginia, the corn crop, we learn, is a partial failure, and ' not over two-thirds of last year s crop. . . .. , We' have no very deGnite advices from Tennessee, but from what we have, our irnpredion is 'tbr crop ; is moderately good, though in some places it is short, consequent upon the drought. - In all the places we heard from, hogs are being generally fed with grett care and industry, and it is exceedingly .difficult to purchase stock hogs, showing that the own- , ers feel satisfied they are fully able to feed all they have. The reverse was the case at this time last year. In some parts of Indiana stock bogs are scarce and -In demand, as high as 4 gross having been paid for them. There Htms to ta no speculation going on, and we hear of no contracts being made. The impresiion is general with the farmers, that they will obtain hi;li prices for their hogs, but all thnsj who -went in so freely . last Fall, are now holding otT. The indications are that the number of hogs brought to market will b as great a3 last year, and that. their condition will very much im proved. " Douglas' Prospects. A letter from Wash ington says: The result of the California election is a fearful blow to Douglas, who discovers that his peculiar doctrines nave taken no hold in any of the Free States. The Republicans are not disappointed at Bakers defeat, ta cause they made very little calculation on election.. ... Unless Ohio should go against the Repub. ' Ucans, which no one here ' thinks even possible, the Little Giant maycosidered himself shelved. The Administration is not anxious for Democratic success in any of the Western States, hero the friends of Dougles are np for office, and it will hardly be dis- ' appointed. . Douglas condition is pitiable abandoned at the South by bis party friends, and unable at the North to obtain recruits from the Republican, maks, he is likely t fall to the grwund'tatween the two stools. His vaulting ambition has o'erleaped itself, i -.-.. gf The question of the future annexation of Western Florid to Alabama, is ex-' citingcoiisidcrable interest among the" citizens of loth States. During the approaching election-in Florida, it will Ibrni one of the pincipal mutters of consideration.

Admission will be free, and persons of all religious denominations arc invited to attend. This lady is among the most eloquent teachers of her sect, and has acquired a wide reputation for the beauty and elevated moral sentiments Of her dis courses, and for the purity of her diction. ggy Three steamships of rival companies left New York, on Thursday for Aspiuwall The competition for pisseNgers was so grea that passengers got their tickets aj low as $45, and even $40, through to San Francis co. with bed and board on the passage. The Herald says some of the agents looked as i they would bike, if pressed,. gootV looking men for nothing, and handsome women would have been paid to go. Messrs. Winans, of Baltimore, have not abandoned their double cylinder steamer as a failure. They have ben lengthening her, and making other improvements, which the trial trip suggested.' They propose to make, next week, another trip to sea, and take her round to Norfolk, or into Portland to meet the Great Pattern. , tsf President Buchanan attended in person to the opening of. the bids fur the transportation of supplies for the army in New Mexico and Utah, the Secretary of War tains absent. None of th old contractors were successful bidders. The contracts. were given to new men, and were taken at d action of one -third of former rates. a reZ&f President Buchanan is spending the present week at Wheatland. . The Philadelphia Bulletin says : ' lie studiously avoids Philadelphia In his journeys to his old home. He comes and oes iu such a mysterious manner, that Pennsylvania never has a chance to show him hat she thinks of him. 1 lie visits her in a seini-vlandestine way, and with none of thi pomp and formality of his tours in Southern $tftte. He has never, since bis election, been in Philadelphia, Jlarrisburgh, or Pittsburgh: i Nay, we think he had not even been irt Lancaster, which is within sight of his ; house at Wheatland; for he contrives to get li the bousc'without passing through the important city of the county where he resides, nod of !wbich,'since Martin Van Buren's time,' the Democrats have boastingly spoken of as " the only ', Democratic citj,'.' though it has long : since lost that distinction. The Philadelphians want to know why Mr. Buchanan should so carefully avoid the metropolis of his . native State the city which gave him such a rousiug vote itv 1 856.-a" Inebriate Asylums. Prof. Dunbar is actively engaged in the work of establishing an Inebriate Asylum in Maryland. The American Medical Gazette, in noticing his Libors,' makes a moot earnest appeal in behalf of such institutions. A large asylum of that kind has been 'begun at Binghamp-' ton, under the charge of Dr. Turner, and we doubt not that after its beneficient influences have been observed, many others will be founded.- It is well ascertained that the appetite for intoxicating drinks, like any other appetite, is hereditary, so that sometimes a child is scarcely more to be blamed for it than for having received a consumptive weakness from its parents. It is the opinion of the experienced men' who favor the establishment of these asylums, that intemperance, particularly in it worst stAges, should be treated as s disease. They tali ve that, I with special treatment, It may, in many cases, . be cured, and in most cases alleviated.'; , . . -. y The demand for such Institutions is very great, s We have been told -that DrTurner has received several hundred applications for admission, many of which came from clergymen, ladies, and other persons, occupying most respectable positions in society. They have inherited an uncontrollable dsire for intoxicating drugs, or liquors, and plead for a reception into this asylum as their only hope of usefulness, safety, and even of life. We believe that this treatment of inebriate has been for sometime practiced in some of the European cities, and with the most flattering success. . . C3uTbe German smokers are in an e stacy of deli jib t fu continence 'of a report that Prof. LiebTjr has discovered "a 'mode of imparting to ordinary tobacco the perfume and flavor of the finest Havana. He wa3 taken up insensible and carried to his room. It was found on examination, when he became conscious, that he was paralyzsd in , all those parts of :ii3 body below the neck; and that his neck, was broken. He remained in this condi tion over five days, conversing freely with ns attendants, and describing to them all the sensations which he had. His attending physicians made an attempt to set the neck, but were obliged to desist, on accouut of suffocation coming on whenever the bead was brought to it3 natural . position. Be tween the 5th and 6th davs the nurse underook to move him for the purpose of chang ing his linen, and in doing so, the head was unwittinginly turned, so that the neck was straightened. Death took place almost in stantly. Revolution is the Daxcixo Circles. -A grand revolution, says a New York let ter witter, is about to take place in the Terpsicorean world. The round" or polka redowa dunces are to be utterly tabooed, in deference to hoops and the middle aged ladies the size of the one and the rheumatic joints of the other making the nimble pas of the polka rather a dimcult task. 1 be old or stately qnadrille will resume its sway in "our best society,' as it is less fatiguing to muscles less damaging to hoops and affords, in its slow and swan-like move ments, ample opportunity for conversation. A newly arrived Monsieur Tremse, Irom Paris, is now - inducting our young, beaux into the mysteries of the venerable Minuet it la Cour. 'One of the Fifth Avenue "model men" the Belvidere .Apollo of a large fashionable circle has already added to his list of terrible fascinations the art of going through "Sir Roger de Coverley ' In a stvle which the mythical high-bred gentleman of that name would have envied. t&m On Friday last, a freight car on the Illinois Central Railroad took fire, and while all ablaze, was subjected to a pouring bath, which soon extinguished the names. A por tion of the car and a large amount of freight was burned. Among the latter was a box marked "codfish! which was so badly charred that on attempting to remove it, it fell to pieces, and was found to contain two kegs of gunpowder! An Illinois, editor, with a dry humor which such an event is liable to provoke, closes his account of the affair with the remark that, "in a few min utes more, the engineer would have received the worst blowing up he ever got. teTA boy in Baltimore, aged 12 years, is said to have frogs living in his stomach, he has been visited by several physicians, who suppose that the spawn of a frog was taken into the stomach, aud the difliulty has been produced by the hatching or incuba tion ot tho reptile. His malady has all the srmptoms of epilepsy. This theory is sup ported by the fact that the gastric juices of the stomach will not destroy or cause to be digested any live or animated thing,' and by the fact that frogs and - other reptiles have been found Imbedded in the heart of rocks and trees, where they mnst have remained for ages, and exhibiting life and action on tain? exposed to air. Powerful'lmedicine, calculated to destroy or eject the reptiles , is now being administered to the boy.
