P..u.,'.M.. , 1 UTRCS 1. icSHXsi will uurea iuc uutens of Evansville, at the court hou3e, at 7 J o'clock, P. Mn Friday, Oct. Tth. Secretary of State. There are three candidates announced for the office of Secretary of State, which it is allured will be lerallv vacant after the elect;n nn TnMdav nt. Daniel McClure. who a wu the incumbent, at the last October election. was re-elected for the term of two . years from January 1859. Shortly after the election, and before the expiration of his first term, Mr. McClure resigned the office: whereupon Gov. Willard appointed C. I. Dunham Secretary of State to fill the unexpired term. The term for which Mr. Dunham was appointed has since expired, and another general election recurring this fill, it is held to have been the plain and positive duty of the Governor to have ordered an election to 11 that office. This he has neglected to do, and as the requisitions of the Constitution cannot, or ought not to be defeated by the neglect, or corrupt disregard of them by the Governor, m svtin A.r tViA noorvl A rf tha State . M. vv. rr ; seem resolved to vote for a new Secretary of Sute, without the sanction of the Governor. Under an appointment as Secretary of State, for Mr. McClure's unexpired term, Mr. Dunham is in fact filling the offico for the succeeding . term, for which McClure never qualified a alL This is an arbitrary exercise of power, in direct and palpable violation of constitutional provision. As Mr. Dunham will be here on Friday to address the people, his opinion may be asked in regard to thequestion. The voters shonld understand on what title be pretends to hold the office. If he is a usurper or an intruder, the people want to know it. If he has a legal and constitutional right to the place let him vindicate it. There are three candidates for the alleged racant office. Ml Jahks M. Hill, of Jennings county, appeals to the Black Republicans for support. Ms: William M. Fhxsch, ot Clark county, is a coaservatire of the opposite ranks. Ma. Jzssx L. Alixasdir is a Democrat! but will accept the rotes of all parties. We do not know anything of the characters or qualifications of any of the candidates, bait la aaid that all of them are qualified for the office. Tbi GotebkoR akd the School Books. I The State Sentinel declares that the article published - in this paper, in regard to the I change of books used in our schools, was full of gross errors. The statement made by us was founded upon a communication sent to us from a reliable source in Indianapolis. To correct the error, we copy the Sentiner$ version of the proceedings: It is charged that McGuffev's series of Readers has been adopted by the State Board of Education as text books iu the common schools of the State. This is not the fact. No such action has been had by the Board. At the roeetincr of the Board referred to, the Superintendent of Public Instruction onered a resolution covering the I action, wmcn nnaiiy met tne unanimous sanction of the Board, bnt the language of the resolution not exactly meeting the views of the Board, Gov. Willard drafted one which did, and it was unanimously adopted. That resolution adopted Goodrich's series of readers as - cheaper, the amount of matter being taken into consideration, and having already adopted Butler's Grammar, who is the author of Goodrich's Readers, it was regarded S3 consistent and just that they should be preferred to any other. The action of the Board is said to have received the approbation ot the Superintendent. , The complaint against the change is said to hare originated with the publishers of the excluded books. ' ' ' ' ' ' ST The United States Marshal for Indiana, and the leader of the Lecomptocites, J. L. Robinson, does not like the anti-Le-compton movement to bring Judge Douglas into Indiana to address the people. He thus speaks of it: "The bolters about Indianapolis have cot op a call for Dourrlas to come to this State, and are clandestinely sending secret circulars round through the State to get signatures. Douglas men undoubtedly have a right to invite Mr. Douglas to come here, but they have no right to pretend they represent the w masses of tho Democracy," in any locality that we know of in the State. We understand there is one in this town. Who can honestly say that in signing such a document, he represents the mass of the Democracy of this county ? We shall see. Dio? tsx Niggib. The Indianapolis Atlas says: -Tbe Republicans of the free States would most glaaly ' drop the nigger question ' if they were penaijted to do so. They do not desire to agitate it, but it is forced upon them by the Democratic party, who attained power by Its agitation, and who seem determined to keep it by the same means." If the Republicans would stop talking the nigger, the other side would soon cease prating about slavery. The best stopper to the tongue of & virago is silence. When no one answers, it lags, the steam of her wrath goes down, and the qnarrel ends in a dead calm and silence. If the Black Republicans would remain silent on the nigger question for six months, they would kill off the Southern slavery extensionists ; they wonld die of inanition in sixcy days. Both parties, North and South, live upon the excitement which the violence of each produces in the opposite section. If one would step, the fuel of the other would be gone.

The Prospects or the Pbovbios Trade. -In the absence of all foreign demand for the hog product, with no market to look to other than home no reason can be girenwhy the high prices" of last season . . . r - - and the year previous should be expected. All accounts from abroad indicate a large hog crop in Ireland this season, which will have much to do with supplying the English and other European markets. Our own meats have been gradually finding less fa vor with the English ' and French governments, partly owing to our mode of fatten ing and curing, as well as to the damage and injury frequently sustained - by the article while on transit. The boa cholera which still prevails in all parts of the West with unabated mortality will reduce the crop I maicuauj mis year, oui sot to an extent to I bring the supply down to mand. the reduced deWater Gas. A successful experiment in the manufacture cf gas from water, was made at the gas works in Wilmington, Del., on the 1st instant, the demonstration waa in every respect satisfactory, the light being very pure and brilliant. One twenty-seventh of the usual capacity of the works can supply the whole city with this gas, at all elevations. . The light, in burners suited to the density of the gas was admirable. It is manufactured under Dr. Sanders' Cincin nati patent, and is cheaper and clearer than that made from coal. The directors of Philadelphia city works, and many scientific gentlemen, were delighted with the success of the demonstration. S?ju A boy named John Durk hanged himself in St. Louis on Friday, it is suppos ed, because he was not allowed to - serre at masj. It appears that after the boys had dressed in the room adjoiuing the chapel, for the purpose of serving at mass, it was found that he would not be required. The others repaired tt th Impvl and left liim there. When they n-turne.l, to their horror ihtj found him hanging dead. 1I LhJ, in the interim, liatitd himself by meaaa of a rope fastened to a step-ladder. Eceopean Crops. Private advices from England represent the crops in that country and throughout Europe, to be less productive than waa anticipated. The actual yeld of wheat will he much below an average in Great Britain, France, and Russia. Under the circumstances, considering the reported spread of the potato disease, some British houses write as though they looked for a fair export from this side. ; At present, prices do not permit ot grain1 exporting to England at a profit, but there is some prospects of an early advance in English markets. , , t ' - ' ' ' Scicide. ' Assuming that she runs to Portland in seven days, the cost will, therefore, be $30,000 ; miscellaneous charges, $45,000. The Cunard steamers are asserted to cost Xl per mile, and the Great Eastern will average 2 per mile. The' Great Eastern will not be liable to dock does or pilotage at either Ilolyhead or Portland.
