FRIDAY MORNING,...............SEPTEMBER 30 ======= RIVER ITEMS. ——— ARRIVED. Laurel Hill, Louisville Melnotte, Pittsburg Kate Sarchet, Cairo Shenango, do Union, Louisville Alida, Cannelton Magnolia, Louisville Kate French, Louisville ——— DEPARTED. Laurel Hill. N. O. Magnolia, N. O. Kate Sarchet, Wabash Melnotte, St. Louis Union, Green R Shenango, do Novelty, Wabash Kate Sarchet, Wabash ——— The weather yesterday was cloudy and damp. The river is raising here steady, having risen one foot since our last report; we may expect to find it stationary this morning, as it is falling at all points above. Business was rather dull and no shipments were made: at St. Louis, the river was faling [sic] yesterday at the rate of about one inch in 34 hours. The upper rivers are all falling slowly. There is two feet in the channel below Peoria, 26 inches on the Lower Rapids, and 4 feet scant below Keokuk. There is 3 1/4 feet in the channel of the Missouri from St. Joseph down, and 5 1/2 feet in the channel of the rirer out to Cairo. The weather continues very fine and warm, and business on the landing was dull. The readers of the river column have noticed that in the last two or three days, we have made numerous mistakes. This has been owing to the failure of the Louisville papers to arrive here and from misunderstanding. Henceforth we will try and attend to our own business, and not listen to those who have likewise been misinformed. We are sorry that such errors should have happened, and in future we shall wait for something definite, so that our predictions will come true. The <Lue Eaves> is due from Pond River and will, in all probabiliry [sic], be here this afternoon. The <Greenville> is also due and may be looked for during the day. The <Castle Garden> is the regular Cincinnati packet to-day. She is a good boat, and officered with experienced men. The huge steamer Magnolia touched at this port yesterday, on her way to New Orleans. She was light, and showed to advantage. The <Kate Sarchet> was to leave for Wabash last night. The neat little steamer <John A. Fisher is the regular mail and passenger packet for Paducah to-day, on the arrival of the cars. The "<Star>" officers are aboard. The <J. H. Done> has indefinitely postponed her trip to Cairo. The <R. M. Patton> is due here to-day, bound for Eastport. She was to leave Louisville yesterday at 4 o'clock. Capt. Barnard will be found on deck. The new steamer <Lafourche> was advertised to leave Louisville yesterday, which will make her due here this afternoon.— Passengers going South will find everything complete on this boat. The <Alida> will leave punctually at 10 o'clock for Cannelton, and passengers who wish a speedy and safe trip, should get aboard. She is to be depended on, and her officers are clever gentlemen. The <Scioto No>. 2, will be down from Louisville to-day, and after proceeding to Henderson, return on her up trip. Captain Ballard is in command, and those wishing a quick voyage should not neglect this opportunity. The <Novelty> left for Wabash river yesterday evening under command of Capt Mitchel, on a prospecting tour. She proposes remaining in that trade if she can make it profitable. The stern-wheel steamer, <Belle Creole>, caught fire and was burned to the water's edge and sunk, at Madison, Tuesday. She was built at Wheeling three years since, by Jos. Richardson and others, and was probably worth $8,000 or $10,000. She has been engaged in a bayou trade during the past two winters, and had gone to Madison for repairs. Capt. Maratta's new side-wheel packet, <Ethan Allen>, for the Cincinnati and St. Louis trade, building at Pittsburgh will be completed in February. Her cabin will be similar to that of the <Princess>. The wrecking company have at the wreck of the <Peter Tellon>, at Point Chicot, two of their boats, the No. 7 and No. 11. The flood of last spring left a deposit of mud on the wreck of the <Tellon> 40 feet deep, but, as the river fell, 25 feet of the deposit washed off, still leaving 15 feet of mud on the wreck.— This mud is removed by a pump, 22 inches in diameter, which, when in operation, creates a current on the top of the wreck, which lies in 52 feet water, removing the deposit, and enabling them to get the freight which is in the wreck. The cargo of the <Tellon> consists of 450 barrels pork, 260 tierces lard, 130 kegs lard, 8 hhds. tobacco, &c. The pretty and elegant Arkansas river Mail packet, <Irene>, was snagged and sunk in the Arkansas river on Friday last, at Red Fork. 45 miles above Napoleon. She went down in sixteen feet water, broke in two, and can't be raised. The cabin furniture was saved in a damaged state, and taken to Napoleon. The <Irene> was owned by Capt. T. Dean, of Cincinnati, and Capt. Jno. D. Adams, of Arkansas. She was built at Cincinnati last season, and had recently undergone complete repairs, and was worth $18,000, and insured for $12,000, in the Firemen's, Western, and Washington offices of Cincinnati. We do not know whether she was bound up or down. Her cargo, of course, was valuable. Another steamer will be built or purchased forthwith to take her place in the Arkansas river mail trade. The <Pocahontas>, Capt. Riley, is plying as a packet between Cairo and Cape Girardeau. The <Fleta<, built at Louisville, for Captain Barnes, has abandoned the idea of ascending the falls of Red river, and returned to New Orleans. The <Imperial> has at length abandoned the mob line, and is plying in the cotton trade betwen [sic] New Orleans and Memphis. The officers of the <T. C. Twitchell> went to the jail in New Orleans and paid fines for enough men to manage the boat, in order to get them at something like reasonable prices. But after the boat left New Orleans the crew one by one deserted, until she had to employ others. All this was owing to the scarcity of hands and the high rates of wages. ———<>——— TERRIBLE AFFRAY.—A correspondent at Rockport writes us that a most shocking affray occurred near Gentreville in that county on Monday night. A man named Wilder assaulted a Mr. Collins in his own house and a fight ensued, in which Wilder, the first assailant had both eyes gouged entirely out. The shocking a flair had caused a deep sensation in the neighborhood. ———<>——— ——>Mr. Everett spoke the whole of his oration upon Webster without referring to notes. The Providence <Journal> says, "the wonderful exertion of memory is not without precedent, but such power of memory combined with such other great power, may challenge comparison with any thing in the history of oratory."

attack on a Chinese fort, insist that the batteries were manned by ! Europeans as well as Chinese.' They say that men in gray coats with cropped hair, and Russian features were visible io the batteries, and the whole of the fortifications were evidently of European designing. Some of those who advanced near the wall even go fo far as to declare they have heard men calling for more powder in Rtmian, and this morning it is rejwrted two bodies floated out of the river, dressed in Chinese clothes, but having European features.
