EVAMSVILLE, IMP. K HI DAT MORNING SEPTEMBER 30 For Judge ot the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit. JOHN PITCHER, of Posey. WM. P. PARRETT, of Warrick. Prosecuting Attorney for the same.. JAMES SHANKLIN, of Vanderburgh. Editorial Rablas. From the manifestations made bj our neighbor of the BoonvUlo Democrat, we are let! to believe that some sort of animal rabidnesa has broken out in the streets of Boonvilla, worse than that which created so much alarm la3t week in our highways, and that the Boonrille Democrat has " got a bite." That paper flies at Judge Law with most rabid ferocity for having, in return for his kind and hospitable reception at the Spencer county Fair, courteously invited the citizens of that county his hosts to visit our entertainment next week. Ceuld any one but a misanthropic churl have done less. For this simple act of common politeness, the amiable and esteemed Judge is abused, and the District Association, which ho represented, denounced as a humbug and fraud. The secret of the offence is, that by some mistake or unavoidable circumstance, the time selected of the District Fair, was in the same week in which the Warrick county Fair occurs. The Democrat seems to be troubled with a fear that its home exhibition will be deserted for the more imposing show here. The people of Spencer and Warrick will meet with a most hearty welcome to our entertainment, and we hope they are preparing to come in hosts ; but we would suggest to them that as there are five days allotted to the show here, they can conveniently and pleasantly spend one day on their way, in examining the excellent products of Warrick that will be collected at Boonvilh. There, will be much there worthy of a visit to see. But the Democrat warns all comers "There will be uo humbugs on exhibition to - draw" wondering mankind upon the grounds no $1,000 will be paid to have Flora Temple" there no $1,500 will be paid to have one of Lutta's steam fire entities on exhibition uo express messenger will be sent for some distant " intellectual light to display his flanks none of these may be expected, but a simple show of the real, substantial wealth of old Warrick and the surroundiug country which may be disposed to join. This aud this alone, will comprise the attraction at our Fair grounds next week. It more than this is needed bv auy one, let him go where humbugs are the order of the day, aud the only capital which many hare to work upon where tinsel show and gaudy parade where the "sound tug brass and tinkling cymbal " are the principal stock in trade. There are such places as these, and one need not travel far tu order to find them." It the author of this spleen ish ebullition will visit the District Fair, otir uivcnanu I and farmers will shame him out of his illtemper and abuse, by the display they will make of their products. Coming Events. The New York Herald, contemplating the revolution in navigation and com men i which the Great Eastern is to initiate says : " It is not difficult to see in the aggretraie, although the details are hidden to us, the revolution that the Great Eastern is to achieve. Her ultimate destination is to run from England to the Antipodes. This, ot itself, will bring the two hundred millions of civilized men who live on one corner of the shore of the Atlantic, into intimate contact with thc six hundred millions of barbarians who reside on the shores of the I ndi:tn and Pacific oceans. Commerce will soon attain such gigantic proportions under thu new development, that the Great East ern, as with the Great W'stern, will lie put aide betore her lite is ended, on some out ot the way route, as two small and slow for the wants of trade and travel. Cities that are now looked upon as monsters will grow in like proportion. If Sandy Hook is too shallow for the en trance of the world's new carriers, New York will turn round and sit itself down on the other end of Manhattan Island, paring away the headlands of the Sound aud the rocky pass of Hell Gate. The ap prenticesbip of ocean steam navigation, which has just ended on the Atlantic, wil bloom into maturity on thc Pacific. Em pires will grow up on its shores, and the cry that is already beginning to be heard in a few place will resound throughout the earth men, more men, to till the soil, to delve the mine, to plough the deep, to buil empires. Nations will be moved to and fro, the races mingled, and the power of the earth rest where man is most tree and his energies most untramelled. The Great Eastern will effect as great a revolution for New York in the future as the Great Western has done in the past. Not alone will she and the other steamers of like dimenious which are sure to follow her impart immense strengeh to the growing .'inmerci:tl destinies ot the city, but they will revolutionize the late of the city Itself. Business will lie transferred to the upper end of the town, where no one of this generation expected to see it extend, and the whole island will become one vast commercial mart, with its centre about the liue. of 1 unth street. What a change I The trade . rested by vessels of the present dimensions entering the harbor by Sandy Hook, will doubtless continue to be transacted down town, as now ; but the trade whose growth the new lines of monster ships will create and foster, must roncentratu in the vicinity of their anchorage. The Hon. Jno. C. Rives, editor and j.t.Misber of the CuiyressioHal Globe, was in this city on Wednesday. H came in his plain aud unobtrusive way, and spent the day in trrcing the changes of tweuty-tive nisi in our city, with which he was familiar wliiu a clerk in the Bunk at Shawncetowii ; and it was not till he was altout to leave by the cars that his presence was discovered by hiiold atunaihlances. Lakok Emigration Kxpkctko. The Liverpool Tunes says it has the best authority for stating that the prrrjiectj of evnigration to the United Sutra are M most prorobiini,', anti a active rnovetoent loidonic mouth- iui.tu ipated. The luiest i niiraticni statistics show that while there is a lulling oft in thc Irish emigration, the number of .Scotch aud English emigrants is largely increased.
From Lake Superior.
We arc in the receipt of a private letter from our old friend and former neigh I Kr, I a Col. Drew. The borean climate ot Lake Superior has not more than the frigid doctrinesof Lccomptonism chilled the warm sympathics nor abated any of the genial and kindiy impulses of the Colonel. He is in glowing spirits, and as cheerily busy as the maternal bird building her nest. Ho has all the Indians around the western shores of the Lake under his paternal care. He is laying off the reserves allotted to thc separate bands and establishing stations with a farm, and mechanics' shops for each. He had on the 18th inst, just returned from the w r ondulac Reservation where tne government had opened a larra, built several comfortable dwellings, a store-house, blacksmith I aad other work shop3 for supplying the wants of the Indians, and to teach them some of the habits and arts of civilized life. He was about to start for the Bad River Reservation where he expected to meet 3000 Indiana to whom he pay9 one of the heav iest annuities of his agency. He has four Reservations under his superintendence; Daring the season of navigation he is kept dilligently at work, and most of thc time upon the wing. The Colonel wishc3 it to be most distinctly understood that he is a Hoosier, and especially an Evan9villc man that Vander burgh is the home to which he hopes to return to enjoy the fruits of all his exertions. After the completion of his payments for the season, he will, if he can procure a short furlough, make a visit, during this fall or winter, to his old friends, among whom he will be sure of a cordial welcome. Thc country, around thc Western shores of the Lake, is described as possessing agri cultural advantages equal to the liest por tions of Wisconsin and Minnesota. The climate is the most salubrious on the conti nent; every one grows fat and strong in breathing lite pure and invigorating aiuiosphere. Fish and game abound everywhere. The Colonel makes his journeys principally m canoes and on loot, in uesonoing nis last excursion, he says: We started from Superior on Tucoday, with a fiue breeze, which soon took us to Oueota. when the wind went down, aud we were compelled to resort to our oars. We ar rived at Fondulac before sun-down, and pro ceeded at once to climb the mountain, and look for a camping ground. Atter a tramp of about four miles, we came to a beautiful spriug creek, where we "pitched our tent" for the night; we, ot course, had a relish . i I i... Politics is Califounia. The latest in telligence from California indicate that the Lecomptou Democracy will be likely to car ry the State. The Republicans and anti Lecomptou Democrats failed to unitn on a Congressional ticket, each organization pn ferring to stand by its own ticket and 1 defeated, rather than, by waiving some iui.nn differences, unite and achieve a glorious success. The Republican Central Committee state that the fault lies at thc door of the anti-Lecomptonites, who failed to come to any understanding with them, although they (the uuti-Lecomptonites) made the first advances, which met with a liberal response on their part. One of the candidates on the Republican State ticket resigned in favor of the snti-Lecorapton candidate for thc same office, but it was thought the Republicans would supply his place by a new man. This state oi niaucn exists m many ,ria oi Northern Ohio, Western isew iorK, and in Vermont and New Hampshire. It is said that in many places there will be great difficulty in keeping the cattle through the winter. Sri? To exhibit the progress iu the size of Ocean steamships, the following statement is made. In ltil'o the largest steamship that had been built, was 122 feet keel, and 27 feet beam. In 1835, the largest was 182 feet long with 28 feet beam. In 1838, the Great WcsUm was built 23C feet long and 35 beam. In 1844, thc Great Britain was launcbed, 321 feet on deck, with fifty-one feet beam. In 1853 the Himalaya was put afloat and measured 370 feet long and 43 feet deep. In 185Cthe Adriatic was built 354 feet long and 50 in breadth. In 185U the Great Eastetn was launched, being G30 feet long and 83 feet in beam. Thus, the ocean-going steuiner of 1859 is nearly six times thc length of that of 1825, whilst thc difference between the tonnage is still more iu favor of thc latter. The en tire freight of the Great Eastern, with coal and cargo, is thirty thou-and tons, which is greater by eighteen thousand tons than that of any vessel now afloat.
