The Daily Journal. ======= WEDNESDAY MORNING....... SEPTEMBER 28 ======= John Raine, Mound City Julia Roane, Pittsburg Lizzie Simmons, Louisv Dr. Kane, St. Louis John Gault, Cairo. DEPARTED. John Raine, Louisville Julia Roane, N. Orleans Lizzie Simmons, N. O. Dr. Kane, Pittsburg Lue Eaves, Green River Charley Bowen, Cairo John Gault, Louisville ——— Yesterday the weather was clear and warm, but toward evening it clouded up, we confidently look for more rain. Business on the wharf was rather dull, and it is with great difficulty that we could obtain a solitary item of interest. The only shipments made to-day was by the <Charley Bowen>, and they were few. The river at Cincinnati is again rising, although it is falling at Louisville. We may look for a slight addition to our now swolen [sic] river, but the change cannot be very considerable. The <Union>, the regular Louisville and Green river packet, arrived last night and immediately left for Green river. The <Gillum> is expected to arrive from Green river to day. The <Woodford> will be here to-day bound for New Orleans. Passengers and shippers should hold on for her as she is a safe and reliable boat. Her fare is not surpassed by any boat on the western waters and her officers are superior gentlemen. The <Charley Bowen> left yesterday with a good trip. She goes on the ways at Mound City and we see that her officers were prepared for a hunt. The favorite and reliable packet <Alida> will shove out for Cannelton to-day at 10 o'clock. She is safe and speedy and has superior accommodations for passengers— Her officers are experienced and gentlemanly. The <J. H. Done> from Columbus, will be here to-day and take the place of the <Charley Bowen> in the Cairo trade. She is commanded by Capt. Lew. Davis. The <Key West>, bound up, and <Ohio, No>. 2, bound down, collided at Boone Furnace Landing, Saturday evening. The former was the sufferer, having lost twenty midship outriggers on the larboard side by capsiting the Ohio's bow. The <McLellan> went down yesterday bound for Memphis. She was well lined with passengers and had considerable freight. The <John Gault> went up yesterday with a good trip of freight and passengers. She has been rery unfortunate of late, and was considerably behind time. The <J. A. Fisher> leaves to-day on the arrival of the cars. She is the mail packet and has good accommodations. The trading boat of Sherwood, Oakley & Walker, is progressing rapidly. It will be the first two-story flat-boat we have seen for some time. Her engine is ready and she will probably get under way in a short time. The <New Magnolia> was to have been here yesterday. She will, in all probability, be here to-day. She is in charge of Capt. St. Clair Thomasson, with Clerk Rudolphus Martin, of Louisville. Her engineers are Mr. J. R. Daily and Mr. Frank Jackson of this city, and are known for their prudence and watchfulness while at their posts. The <Magnolia>, like both her predecessors of the same name, is provided with apperattus [sic] for making gas, and fixtures to carry it all over the boat, even up in "Texas" and the Captain's room thus furnishing a convenient, abundant, and safe light, at an expense—including the whole cost of apparatus, &c.,— but little above that of ordinary lamps. The <Fanny Bullitt> on her way from New Orleans passed this point last night, on her way to Louisville, with a big trip of freight and passengers. The <Scioto No>. 2 arrived from Louisville with a big trip of freight and passengers. She returned immediately after going to Henderson. ———<>——— Exports asd Imposts. NEWS BY TELEGRAPH,
EY TBE E. A W. LINK. Xkw.Vobk, Sept. 27 M Tbe steaim-r CVy 0 Baltimore arrived here this morning. Her advices have bees anticipated. The llrrakf.t reporter had an interview t-fenlay with ('apt. t'oliistock, late of the Colltus .-U-anier, Baltic, who mine home as a pas-tenger iu Ihe Yiinderbilt. tie went out in the Uuinti frigate General Admiral, on a voyage from New Vbrk to Coustadt. lie has taken a great interest in the steamer Great Fastern, ami has visited her every low months while in course of const 1 notion, aud, ou invitation of Capt. Harrison, her coiiitnaiidei, and the Hoard of Directors of the (ileal Ship Company, he accoiupauied her on her recent trip, aud happened to be on deck at tbe lime of the fatal steam explosion on the evening of the :t L inslaut. dipt. Comstock is highly plea.sed with the stcdmcr, and pronounces her a perfect success, so far aa navigation is concerued, and is even enthusiastic ou the subject of ber .ci toi mauces. Man v persons have the iuiprcsHou that tbe late trip was a trial trip for 1. but this is an entire mistake; thu trip w as made simply for tbe purpose of removing the ship 'from her position in the Thames to a spot w here she can be coaled and put in projicr trim for a trial trip. The Great Eattern is to be prepared for ber trial trip a soon as tbe repairs necesitatod by the explosion can be completed. Her trial trio will be from Portland to Hollybead, and according to preseut arragetneuta, .-lo- will sail from Hollybead tor Portland on the iuth of October. It ho. been fully determined by the board of Di- j rectory that troni Portland the Great Fattem j shall come 011 an excursion trip to New York I by way of Sandy Hook This is positively settled, and u 1- determined before the ship left the Thames. Capt. Corustot k aid Capt. I Harrison were both examined on the subject ' before the board of Director.-, ami both con- j cur in the opinion that the ship can enter the harbor at Handy Hook drawing 24 and a hall feet of water with perfect safety. The famous Hipper ship Great HrytdUc croted the bar with safety, drawing more inches over '2D feet. It wua theu arranged at Portland, that the Great Eattern shall be lightened to the ic'juired draught aud then proceed on her excursion to this cily, via Sandy Hook. ('apt. Comstock is of opinion that Ihe Great Eaateru cauuot CrOSS the bar salely, except at the evening tides, which occur once a fortnight and that even then she cannot bring much, if any cargo. It vould hardly pay to run her regularly to this point. The Hellgate channel is impracticable, uot for waut of water, but because the channel is too crooked for a vessel of her immense length. I'nder very extraor dinary circumstances the pastjitge through Hellgate might be affected, d'apt. Cornstock thinks that as a )Mtssenger ship the 0ciif fiat-tern might lai run between New York and some Kuropeau port with profit, lecause she would not necessarily draw too much water to enter tbe harbor, if she carried little or no freight, as a depot might be formed for her the other side of Hellgate which after all will be as near New York, as many ships approach to tbe bArbor of Loudon. A large number of the stockholders are directly interested in tbe Cirand Trunk Railroad, and of course would prefer to have the ship run to Portland. The India merchants, desire, if she should prove commercially as well as practically successful, to make ber one of the regular line of packets to India. They contemplate building five more steamers of similar monster proportions for the India trade, but of course that will depend BOM the success of this first great experiment. It combines durability, simplicity, and practicability In a higher degree than any other now iu use. z. In point of strength, elasticity, and endurance, its stitch is not excelled by any machine yet invented. Each stitcb is locked or fastened by the mschiue itself, so that there is no need of drawing the thread through a loop or using a needle to fas tan tbslund of a seam to prevent its raveling or ripping. Such is the nature of the stitch that if every third one he cut, tbe work will neither rip nor ravel. 3. It sews from two common spools without rewinding, and sews in tbe very best manner, coarse and fine goods w ith linea, cotton, or silk thread. 4. It has the best and most reliable feed ever CMUstrncted, aud does not break needles.
