EVANSVILLE, INO. MONDAY MORNING SEPTEMBER 26 For Judge of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit. JOHN PITCHER, of Posey. WM. P. PARRETT, of Warrick. Prosecuting Attorney for the Mm.. JAMES SHAN KLIN, of Vanderburgh. The News. The following was the ticket selected by the American State Convention of New York, made up by selections from both the other tickets: Judge of Appeals, Henry C. Daris, (Rep.) Secretary of State, D. R. F. Jones, (Dem.) ; Comptroller, Robert Dennion, (Rep.) ; Treasurer, Phillip Dorsbc imer, (Rep.); Attorney General, Charles J. Myers, (Rep.); State Engineer, Van R. Richmond, (Dem.); Canal Commissioner, W.J. Skinner, (Dem.); Pnson Inspector, N. S. Elderkin, (Dem.); Clerk of Appeals, Cbas. Hughes (Rep.) County Infirmary, E. L. Muchmorc; for Members of the State Board of Equalizatiooi John F. Torrence, Samuel B. Keys, O. C. Hayes; for Treasurer, Robert Hedger; for State Senators, Ben Eggleston, W. B. Probasco, W. L. Leonard ; for State Representatives, W. G. Cnppen, Wm. B. Davis, GusttT Tafel, Jeptba Garrard, John M.Cocbran, Wm. Floro, Joseph Cllley; for County Commissioner, Uncle Joe Ross; for Justices of the Peace, F. K. Martin, H. H. Schultz. The balloon ascension of Prof. Bannister from the Fair grounds in the vicinity of Indianapolis is reported as a complete success. He was escorted from the gas works where his balloon was inflated, to the Fair grounds, by the Sons of Malta. The weather, which had been disagreeable for several hours, cleared up, as if for his especial benefit, and he made the ascension with great eclat. At the expiration of about 30 minutes the balloon was observed to descend towards the earth. The editor of the New York Mm (Mayor Wood s organ) was violently assaulted by a rowdy named McCabe. The assailant took offense at an editorial, that went to show the responsibility of the disorderly proceedings at the recent Democratic State Convention at Syracuse, rested upon that portion of the Democratic party with which McCabe is identified. A new daily paper called the Ttmc, has been started in Lebanon, Boone County. We apprehend the proprietor of that undertaking, will find it an up bill business. Lebanon is an enterprising village, but hardly enough so to support a daily paper. Two young men were arrested in Cincinnati for breaking into the state room ot a lady, and stealing $300. The following is the ticket selected by the Opposition party of Hamilton county, Ohio: For Judge of Court of Common Plea, Wm. H. Dickson; for Director of Warren Akin, the Democratic candidate for Governor of Georgia, has writren a letter in reply to inquiries, declaring that he will not vote for Douglas even if he receives the Charleston nomination, because he considers bis doctrine of squatter sovereignty worse than the Wilmot proviso. William M. French, editor of the Jeffersonville Republican, has authorized his name to be announced as a candidate for the office of Secretary of State, now usurped by Mr Dunham. A man named Cooper was recently arrested at Mitchell by Mr. Garver, Special Mali Agent, on suspicion of having designs on the mail. Cooper was tukeu to Indian apolis for trial. The Daily Atlas says it is evident that the Democracy have determined to run a candidate for Secretary of State, and that the Sheriff ot" Franklin, a Democrat, has in eluded that office in bis proclamation of of fices to be filled at theOctober election. Dr. George R. Graham, of New Orleans who killed Mr. Lorirg, of California, at the St. Nicholas Hotel, New York, a few years since, was killed in New Orleans a few days ago by a Mr. Toledano. The Lafayette Courier say3 that the hog cholera is prevailing to an alarming extent ill that county. One farmer, a few miles from Lafayette, has within a few days lost fifty of his best hogs, and many others have lost a number by this fatal epidemic. A man by the name of Donaldson, from Mias., recently got into a difficulty with his brother-in-law, S. W. Buyer, of Clarendon, Arkansas and shct him with n gun, killing him instantly. George Hulbert was killed by Henry Bnrgett, about 17 miles belaw Helena, Ark., ooJSaturday last. The origin of the difficulty is nnknown. The Ruselvillo Herald says R. L. Burton, of Todd county, Ky., was fonnd dead in the road, near Elkton, the county seat of Todd, a few mernings since, witb a pistol shot in the breast. His murderer has not been discovered. The Gosbcn Timet, an ultra Repub lican paper, baa concluded that it will be impossible for the Republicans to elect the next Speaker of the House of Representatives. It says tbe Speaker must come from among the an ti-Lecompton Democrats, and it is decidedly for John O. Davis of Indiana. It adds: "He is bold, fearless, and energetic has sufficient capacity for the position, and could be relied on in tbe last emergency. No man is more detested or feard by tbe Pro-slavery Democracy, and no man in the State cad deal them heavier blows iu th hour of battle. A Republican should be elected if possible, but the next tst thing would be to place in tbe Speaker's chair John Q. Davis of Indiana. The Princeton Indianian comes to us in an enlarged form, and -ith an improved appearance. Tbe editor says some tell him he cannot make it pay, but he sees no r-an whv so crood a touutv as Gibuon cannot support a good, respectable and well

Mr. Pugh, who commenced by saying that " he had not come there for the purpose of making a speech, but ho had come for the express purpose of seeing Mr. Hauney tfurath the Black Republican candidate." This insolence was insupportable; and the crowd, a large majority of whom were Republicans, before he could utter another word, completely drowned his voice by cries of "he can t do it," "ihut up, " we don't wan t to hear you," " take in the side show," 44 go into your hole again, and take it in after you," "Ranney! The young Senator took a very singular way of teaching them manners, most certainly : and we think was only paid back in his own coin. Mr. McCormick's reaper and mower has recently achieved a splendid triumph in France. A grand trial of reapers and mowers took place before the Emperor near his palace at St. Cloud, on the the 19th, 20th, and 21st of July last. Forty-eight machines were entered for the trial, of which only twenty-eight appeared on the ground, and finally the contest was narrowed down to a trial between seventeen ot the machines. They were divided into two classes, those of foreign and of French manufacture. To each class three prizes were offered, and a large gold medal was to given to the incontestibly best machine of tbem all. This prize of honor, together with one thousand franca for the best foreign machine, was handed to Mr. McKenzie, a very worthy American, who ran the McCormick reaper, sent over from London bv the manufac turers, Messrs. BurissA Key. Suicide. During the session of the recent Democratic Convention, Charles Snyder, a clerk in the Treasurer's office, and collector of the delinquent taxes, was arresled for forgery and perjury. He gave the required bail for his appearance, and was set at lib erty. On Wednesday afternoon he called at a drug store and purchased a four-ounce phial of laudanum. On returning home, he conversed freely with his wife coucerning his troubles, who advised him to sell off his property and pay the claims ngaiust him. Such a course, he said, would disgrace him, and the gloom y prospect bvfore him caused him to weep bitterly. About three o'clock in the morning his wife wan awakened by his heavy breathing, and attempted to awaken him from his stupor, but in vain. A physician was sent for, who on seeing the phial that was found under the miserable man's pillow sent for a stomach pump, and resorted to all the other remedies uial in such cases. Every effort, however, proved fruitless, and the suicide expired at o'clock. The Cincinnati Timet, which furnishes these facts, says that Mr. S. was formerly a member of the City Council from the Eleventh Ward, a City Commissioneer, a Deputy Sheriff, and at the time of his death, w as clerk in the Treasurer's office collector of the delinquent taxes his accounts have 1 een examined and found to be correct. The deceased was also an elder in a Lutheran church, a member ot the Odd Fellows, and the American Protestant Association. ... . ICommxtticaitit. Steam Fire Knglne. The, Indianapolis Atlas, states that Mr. Lattas' Steam Fire KngineMson exhibition at the Fair, being held in that city, aud that after showing off there, the machine will be Liken to Evansville, which city "will mo. t likely purchase it. That the engine will be brought here, is a fact, but that our Council will buy it, is not so certain. Let us consider the matter. A few weeks since, Mr. Latta came here and agreed to bring this engine to Evansville, provided we would pay expenses both here and back to Cincinnati, in ens we should not conclude to purchase, and to pay expenses to Evansville if we should bny. Thejrioe was to be $5,500. It was understood that the engine was to be here during our Fair, which was an object, as it woald be the first exhibition of the kind in the State, and an attraction likely to draw many who would not otherwise come. It seems that Mr. Latta has availed himself of this agreement, to exhibit his engine at other Fairs ; we, of course, paying all expense of transportation, which for one, I consider a sharp operation. If Mr. Is. chooses to perambulate the country ! h8 exhibition at hia own expense taking us in his route, there can he no oi jection to it. And if we do not buy him out when here, we might perhaps be willing to pay his freight home. More than this, we ought not to do, in view of the course he bag adopted. Then, agaiu. as to buying. I see it stated i that a Philadelphia built Fire Engine, with a power and capacity equal to the one coming here, and probably of a lighter and more easily managed weight, )et of equal strength and durability, was lately tried at Washington City, with the most satisfactory results. As the price of these Philadelphia made machines is only some 3.200, against , Mr. Lattas' pric ot $5,500, it will doubtless i btj well to enquire a lime into tuis Uitur ence, before closing for the engine corning here. The communication is written on tin foil with Tarnish. The foil is placed in the machine, and by the use of some ingenious devices, which come alternately in contact with the nou-conducting v.u nl li and conducting foil, make and break the circuit in a manner corresponding with the form of the letter, which is duly registered at the other end of the iine on chemically prepared paper. Bg. The Superintendent of the West Philadelphia Railroad, says the North American, exhibited to r.s, the other day, ahorse whose hoofs the rats knawed till their teeth had reached the quick. When lying down the rats had also knawed the warts upon the inside of the horse's legs. The rats are so savage in those parts that every morning some of the horses are taken out with feet bleeding from wounds iutlicted by the nocturnal prowlers. MST Many are the stories still related about the late Lord Leymond, and his prowres; among others, that he once put seven policemen, who tried to interfere with his amusements, into a big tub, and set a green grocer s stall, from the Marches des Inno cents, on top of it; and how, another time, be floored a whole regiment of commission aires, who, attracted by his fame, had come expressly to his residence to try " le box." fejy Vesuvius is bursting out into patches of fire in all directions. Prof. Pahnieri, describes the process as follows: "The fire runs along in bidden and naturally formed conduits, the walls of which it bursts thro' when in any great mass, and then overflows. Every spot of fire, therefore, docs not imply that a fresh mouth has been opened, but that a rupture has taken place." flGT" The Portsmouth, Ohio, Journal publishes a passport given by James Madison, when a Minister to England, in 180G to foaeX. Fersando Wood. The Ulica lleraldfucnishes pen portraits of some of the Democratic celebrities at the Syracuse Convention. Of Fernando Wood, it says : Fernando Wood is the Mephistopheles of politicians. He is the 4 mildest mannered man " that ever packed a caucus or got up a row. He i3 what boarding misses would ca!l a 41 a love of a man." His form is slender, but faultlessly proportioned, his tread elastic to airyness, and his carriage graceful to the last degree. His forehead is broad without being massive, and his features regular, vet stronglv marked. The general expression of his face is that of eternal placidity. He might set for the portrait of "Oily Gammon,'' in 44 Ten Thousand a Year ; nd were it not for that pitiless eye and those closely compressed lips, you might mistake him for a moral reformer or a Home Miasiooarj Society Agent. The face of Louis N.'ipjleon is not more sphynx-like iu its expression. Without the apparent dullness of the latter, it has all its iuscrutability . We v. itched it narrowly during that terrible row at Syracuse, and except that it was a shade paler, you could not have known that a human passion had ever stirred it. He has, in an eminent degree, the elements of a successful modern politician. He is cool, intrepid, shrewd, unscrupulous ; a man who, if his character were equal to his brains would stand head and shoulders above his Democratic rivals in the State. The Albany Standard, a Democratic paper, gives the following pleasant account of the gathering at Syracuse to deliberate upon the interests of the party : " A scene, very much like that which many of our citizens remember as being witnessed just before the State Convention of 1853,'was looked upon by many spectators at the Central Railroad depot in tins city, not only yesterday, but this morning. A inrge gang of New York city ruffians and desperadoes the sweeping and scum of the hells, brothels, cock-pits and thieringdens of the great city ticketed through to Syracuse, as a body-guard to the Tammany politicians, in whose pay they are, arrived by the boat from New York, and were carefully re-shipped for the Central City, by the early C. R. R. train. Such a set of scoundrelly fellows we never set eyes on before, and hope never to look upon again." S3, The Chicago Democrat is pitching into both the Democratic and Republican office holders of Illinois, who seem .o have vied with each other in robbing the public treasury with a zeal and energy that is quite commendable. It says: These plunderers are throwing apples of discord among the people upon the slavery question, and are causing a tremendous excitement upon the bred Scott Decision, the Fugitive Slave Law, Kansas and Nebraska Bill, etc., etc., whilst they, themselves, ate filling their pockets from the proceeds of the taxes cruelly wrung from th great mass ot the people." Xt&Xm Somebody speaking of the hurrying propensities of the Yankees, says : " If a big mortar could be constructed, which would throw an immense bomb-shell containing fifteen passengers, from St. Louis to Boston in five minutes, with an absolute certainty that fourteen would be killed by the explosion, tickets for seats by the " Express Bomb-shell Line " would at once be at a premium, each passenger being anxious for the chance to prove himself " the lucky fifteenth. " &dr At a dinner given the 27th ult., by the municipality of Turin, to the Milan deputation, the toast in honor of Count Cavour was worded as follows : To him who, being called to the Ministerial chair in Piedmont, was the first after 1849 to adopt a really Italian policy; to him who, sending the (Italian) tricolor to Taurida, caused it to spread its lustre before the eyes of Luropc ; to him who, at the Congress of Monarch? at Paris, stepped forward the first to uphold the Italian cause ; to him who, in the silence of the Cabinet, prepared all for a third war of LMcrty, concluding a new alliance with the Sovereign of France; to hira who, though be has resigned his powers (for a time ouly it is lobe hoped), lives forever in the hearts of whomsoever loves Italian indeEVANSVILLE TEA STORE.
