SATURDAY MOBMNO, SKPTEM MER i Local aid Misce llaneons. RKLIGIOl'S NOTICK. The caresnony of laying the corner stone of the new church building how Mug srectes! by the church and congregation of which Mr. Md'itrr ! pastor, will take place to-morrow (Sondny I :tfiernoon at 3 o'clock. Several tiMroMiw will be tleHvcrcd.. Tie- puJ.ll. re cordially invited to atteixl. .Wedooot w ith to excite onmwssary apprehension", but we understand from Prs. Dubruler and Walker that the dog reoru to le mad, and which was at large Thursday niglit and Friday morning biting ev ery thing bf came across, has ererr symptom of hydrophobia, Numbers of dogs have been bitten and the ouly safety to tho citizens is in the death of every dog not muzzled or fastened up. ———<>——— DARING BURGLARY.— Night before last a couple of store rooms those of Ahlering & Bro., and George Sonntag—were broken open in the most reckless manner, and robbed of a portion of their contents; the thieves making their escape, without leaving any trace by which they may be discovered. The front door of the clothing store of Ahlering & Bro., which fronts on the landing, and by which some one is passing at almost every hour of the night, was pryed open with a crow-bar. From the marks on the door, and the mannor in which it was fastened, it must have taken the burglars some time to break it open, and an entrance could not have been effected without creating considerable noise. Why it was that the scoundrels were not detected in their operations is a mystery to us. All the loose change, amounting to a few dollars, that was left in the money drawer was pocketed. Tho amount of clothing stolen cannot as yet be ascertained; the room was left in such confusion it being impossible to tell just what was taken. The hardware store of MR. SONNTAG was broken into from the back way. The same crow bar that effected an entrance into the clothing store was used at his door. It, too, was a strong door, secured by a large lock, and a stout iron bar across, which rested in heavy iron staples. The staple were wrenched from their sockets and the door jam badly splintered. Nothing has yet been missed by Mr. Sonntag except a box of cigars. But we should hardly think it likely that any one would go to the trouble of breaking open so stout a door, and be satisfied with a box of cigars. Mr. SONTAGG will, doubtless, yet miss some of his finest cutlery or shooting implements. Those outrages show the necessity of a night police. ———<>——— SONS OF MALTA.— A destitute family rellf arrived in Indianapolis. The? came fnHH Korth Carolina, and had traveled all tM u on foot from that State to Madison. A miss was obtained t.n thum over the Terro Han to Hoatl to Greene: i ale, and Mr. E. T. Keightly, the Treasurer of the Lodgo at that place, pledg1 1 'he Sons to provide for them when tlioy arrived there, and Bee that they weie safely l anded at the place they started for. Tho Sentinel, in narrating this deed of Itenevolence, gays : " The Sons of Malta may tie a little too noisy iu their lodge room, and we sometimes think they are ; but the next tiree we feci like grumbling as the sound of their drums and horns and gongs lloats into our sanctum, we will think of this distressed family made happy, and tell them to thump away." There will be gold at auction, this morning at 9 o'clock, by II. Nelson & Co., at their auction rooms, a few bottles of fine oils for manufacturing liquors. They arc a gen ujne article, and will be sold without re serve. They will sell at the same time eight Itoxes of tobacco, a lot of groceries, boots, shoes, &c. ———<>——— The patent for McCormick's improvement in reaping machines, patented in 1847, hav ing heretofore been several times re-issued, has again been re-issued during the past week. EDITOR OF JOURNAL.—Please say to our numerous readers to be on their guard, as our city is at present flooded with counterfeit one dollar bills, on some of the Kentucky Banks, and the State Bank of Ohio. A sudden change came ocr the weather yesterday. In tho morning it was cold and rather disagreeable, but in the afternoon, it cleared away, and the sun shone with much brilliancy. In the afternoon, it was warm and sultry. The river wai receding last evening, having fallen about one inch in previous twouty-four hours; we predict that it will commence rising by this evening. The river at Pittsburg is falling, with five f et in the channel. The indications, however, are favorable lor more water, as it has been raining continually at that place since Tuesday. At Cincinnati it was rising, with eight fet in the channel. Between Louis rille and Cincinnati, there is seven feet of water, and rising gradually. There is nothing new to FVort in the l'pir Mississippi, Illinois, or Missouri. We are indebted to our young friend, Alonzo Bush, of P. G. O'Rilev's wharf boat, for river favors. He places us under daily obligations for valuable information, for which he has our sincere thanks. The gentlemanly way he has of doing business prepossesses every ouo in his favor The report put in circulation yesterday, that the Heaven had sunk at Hurricane, islnnd, is without foundation. She struck the log on which the Done'i barge was wrecked, injuring her considerably, yet she soon extricated herself and proceeded on down the river. She was considerably lhimi time, and will probably miss one trip, leaving lu re at her regular time on Tuesday. The renowned and swift packet KmU French takes her departure on Monday for Louisville. No boat was ever more iopular and punctual than the Km -, no set of officer? ever gavo more general satisfaction than here. She will take passengers to ami from the Fair at liberal prices, and thoeo wishing to go can find no conveyance more pleasant. She is light draught, and therefore can be depended on, as she has been running during the low-water season without detention by scarcity of water. We commend her as safe, reliable and speedy . The S. P. Hibherd passed down yesterday. She reports the Pike aground at Anderson; Kate Sarchel at French Island ; the M -. v Mel.elland " lighting " Scullletowa; CaroItnt hard aground at Scntlletown. She reports only 30 inches of water on Svutllelown bar. The Star is to Iks laid up for repairs. The new light draught steamer John A. She has very little ttruble to make her tript. The fleet and elegant Louisville ami Cairo mail and passenger packet Hazel Dell, Capt. lot , will ass this point this uiorninr,, on ier way up. Collins, Consular Agent .it Araoor riv'er, Asiatic Russia, has arrived in this city and expects to oail in the course of a few days on his return thither by way of St. PetersturrRh. It appears from his statement that American commerce M the A moor io steadily increasing, several ships having sailed from the United Mtntes with merchandize, including cotton goods, wines, liquors, ship stores, all kinds of Laid ware, machinery, steam cosine, Ac. There are now in the Amoor waters five steamere. A Russian officer, Capt. Pavandoff, at piouent in New York, is Boperintendinig the construction of ileum enpiues and machinery to place in gmi lioats to lie eoMtrttded in the Amoor, which is navigable fur ste.iniItojits at least SyfiiOO miles. Tie- cUswata ll similar to North-west OtanBBa, nntl the agricultural rotluc3 about the Baaae. The irinciKd value of the country as far as developed, is fur its furs and mint s; but when steam con.mimit-ation shall lo fully i -i i lii.-diod the trade will lie iiutuea uraMy increased in other partii ular.--, atnl Siberia and Taitary wi'l aaVi their treasures to those af the Amoor country. From Moscow to the head of the Amour, a distance of four thousand miles, there are upwards of live hundred cities, lowus and villages, of industrious inhabitants. The Amoor Company, this year, nent to tho Amoor river three or four vessels, with full cargoes, together with iron steamers, to accomplish thcCouijioiiy's project, namely : to unite tho mouth of the Amoor with Siberia by a regular lino of steam packets. The recunt ukatc of the Eiujteror, permitting Siberian exiles to visit the Amour, is with a view of settling the shores ol that river and developing the resources of the country. The construction of railroads i.; contemplated, and also lines of telegraph, connecting with jMoscow and other distant itoints. All these movements of the Russian Government are regarded with great interI est. as thev cannot fail to one:: to American comnieitv valuable markets to many of our manufactures, considering our diversified: interests, including those of whaling on tho North Pacific, and contiguous to Siberia ..nil the Amoor. The oninion tirvvaili that we nhoultl have a Consul Geueral instead of j CoiiJ-ulai officers, of a comparatively insignificant trade, with an insufficient salary. ———<>——— LEAVENWORTH, Sept. 23—P M Proposition for a State organization of the Pike's Peak country defeated.
