She onnmL EVANSVILLE, INO. THURSDAY MORNING SEPTEMBER Fur Judge of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit. JOHN PITCHER, of Posey. WM. F. PARRETT, of Warrick. Prosecuting Attorney for the same.. JAMES SHANKLIN', of Vanderburgh. It is generally understood that the coup d'etat of Mayor Wood at the recent byracuse Convention was a great mistake. A correspondent of the Philadelphia rress says: "As a matter of mere policy, it was doubtless the most stupid, as certainly as it was the most suicidal and fatal, blunder that could poaaibly have been committed. So badly was it j lanned and so bunglingly executed, that with the exception of that obstinate, opinionated, crotchety person, Mr. Alvord, of Syracuse, and three other sore heads, (each utterly devoid or influence in his own locality,) the whole seven and twenty Hards, marshalled by Mr. Dickinson and Mr. Croswell, became disgusted, and immediately sought the repose as well as the regularity of the Convention proper. Mr. Dickinson evinced his characteristic shrewdness and tact by making it the peg on which to hang a speech and a letter, and afforded a most desirable opportunity of reinstating himself in the good feelings of his historical opponents; they met him cordially and treated him with magnanimity. Indeed, to the custom-house interest and to those who represent the respectability of the Hards, the knocking down of the tempora ry Chairman, Mr. Stryker, was the greatest godsend they could have possibly had." Our District Fair. This Fair commences October 3d, andjlasts till the 7th. inclusive. The new Fair Grounds have, already, without any Fair, and still in an unfinished condition, proved a decided success. The new-fashioned horse course, in form of a figure 8, and one-half a mile around, has already, for several days, been tried by our fast trotters and pacers and is pronounced by the judges to be the finest track in this part of the country. The grounds are beautifully arranged, very pret tily improved, and admirably adapted to n festival of any kind, but especially to an Agricultural and Mechanical Fair. There is abundance of water for all purposes, steam fire engines and band fire engines included. The most delightful forest shade, and new as all the improvements are, there will be free seats for thousands. A neat cottage for the exclusive use of the ladies, is being Constructed, and ample arrangements are making for confections and refreshments of every neceJeary description daring the Fair. The new Ground are reached from almost every point ot the compass by good roads, and from the number of buggies and carnages daily visiting them already prove the principal point of attraction in the neighborhood of the city. There has never been an enterprise for pleasure and instruction in this county, which has attracted halt' the general interest which these Fair Grounds have done, and when the present improvements are completed, all our people will feel more interest in seeing the Grounds alone, than they ever felt in seeing the old Grounds on an exhibition day. Three miles from town, a slow Railroad train takes you there in six or seven minutes, landing yea on a platform at the entrance gate without fatigue or the annoyance of dust, and when during the Fair a train shall run every hour or every half hour, carrying adults there and back for a quarter and children at half price, thousands will go for the ride and to see the green woods and breath the fresh air, who never attended a Fair before. The St. Loois Evening Newt wants to know why the negro traders, who have been buying up negroes in Jackson county, Missouri, have not been tarred and feathered, and driven out of the State? It says they are abolition izing and overthrowing the domestic Institutions of the State. It inquires : ''What right have they, with their gold, to destroy the "soundness" of our people ou the " goose queation, '" to change the slave holders of the Western counties into Abolitionists, and to transport the chief "Institution" of the State, bodily to the South ? Let the Democratic party look to the matter. '' While the Great Eastern wa on exhibition, prior to her departure for this country, the English visitors cut their initials upon the doors, and stole mementos at such a rate that the directors were obliged to order the closing of the saloon. Tho Providence Journal thinks if she barely escaped being whittled to piece before she left, the captain had better beware of those down-east jack-knives, for a dozen smart Maine whittlers could dispatch six hundred feet of whittling in a very short time. The New York Herald says James Guthrie is the favorite of the Albauy New Vork Regency lor the Presidency. It says: "Douglas is dropped because his money is all apent, and Gntbrie is taken up because the spoilsmen believe he can be bled to the tune of a million of dollars. It is believed he is worth two million?: bat this is doubtIan an exaggeration. He has, however, enough to make a good thing for the butchers of the Regency. It is said he cares not so much for money as for honor ; and if that be so, he is just the man to Buit them. It is for him that Wise has been victimized, and Dickinson soon will be. The latter, notwithstanding the treachery of the Regency to Wise, now gives them his confidence. lie will repent when it is too late, and so will Guthrie by the time the Albany harpies have done with him, nnless he is 8hsxier than tbey are. This is the grand object in hurrying np the appointment of delegates to tiit- L'barlestoa Convention. The Regency want to bleed Guthrie iu the jugular vein. They look upon him as a placer.'' BSjfA, Too New Vork Tribune complains that the apple crop is everywhere a failure in til the regions that send fruit to its market.

Tike Ntwi. A murder was committed near Covington, Miami County, Ohio, on Friday morning last, which occasioned great excitement. The victim and murderer bad just returned from California, the former paying all expenses the latter representing that his father was wealthy and would pay back the money. The crime wa3 committed in order to avoid paying back the money, and also fur the purpose of robbing the deceased of what he had left. Great excitement existed at Piqua. arid there was Ftrong talk of lynching the guilty wretch, who acknowledged the commission of the crime. A woman wife cf a gardener named Davis who lived ner Lebanon, Ohio, being deserted by her husband, purchased a quantity of laudanum, gave one-half to her only ehild, and took the remainder herself. The poison did its work, and when her miserable hovel was visited on Sundav morninp; last, v Of by the neighbor, both the mother and child were found dead. The Doonville Democrat hoists the m int of Joseph A. Wright, U.S. Minister to the Court of Berlin, as the Democratic Candidate for Governor, subject, we presume, to the decision of the State Convention. A terrific storm of rain occurred in Indianapolis, on Sunday night, and at Cincinnati on Monday night. In the latter city considerable damage was done by undermining wa"s, and causing them to tumble down. No lives were lost. The proprietors of the coal mimes at Cannelton and Hawsville have entered into an agreement to charge a uniform price for coal . R. T. Dnrrett has sold his interest in the Louisville Courier to W. G. A Miss Rogers, residing at Red Mills, Ky., on Tuesday evening, while in a fit, fell in the fire and was burned to death. Thomas G. Latta, of Cincinnati, telegraphed to John S. Tarkington, Esq., Secretary of the Marion County Agricultural Society on Saturday, that he would be in Indianapolis luriog the present week, ant exhibit one of his Steam Fire Lngines at tin County fair. This is an attraction that ve did not expect to have. Indianapolis Journal. One of the objects of our City Council in expending about $150, for the exhibition of a Steam Fire Engine in our city during the District Fair, was to give additional interest to that occasion, and induce many from a distance to le present, who might otherwise stay away. It seems that Mr. Latta having au axe of his ow n to grind, is exhibitiag the engine at Indianapolis, at the Marion County Fair. Many persons from Terrc Haute and vi cinity, will, doubtless, go to Indianapolis to seethe machine, who would otherwise have visited our city had the engine not been first exhibited at the Capital. Either the good people of Indianapolis are enjoying an unusual sight with them, at our expense, or Mb. Latta is making bis tour more profitable than the one in which he sunk $1500 in one or two weeks. At any rate he has marred what we thought would te a very peculiar feature of our District Fair, utul for which we paid or are to pay our money.
