.; n-r . - - SEPiKMTIkKU WEDNESDAY WORKING - Local ami Miscellaneous. Oak Hill ITWIMJ Out c4tizenarr deeply indented t tun.good citiwens whoever titer srerr v ho -cured, at an early day, the most love 'y -p -t iu all this region, for a public ittuetcn . Its beauty and loveliness roU the asso miio-is of the tosb of all their rcpulsi venes an 1 terrors. It seems as if it wuuid be tueej to lie down in eternal slumber am:d.-t its quiet shades and lovely prospects; w :tli flic J looming anthem of the turds, and the evening requiem or sighing winds amid its trees. The heart of the mourner is comforted by the gentle and sacred influenc s of the beauty of tne apot. If on earth God has created such external emblems of beauty, goodness, and love, for the comprehension and enjoyment of oar imperfect senses here, what most be the glory of the mansions be has prepared for revealing the perfection of beaty, gootaeaa and truth to the unclouded spiritual perceptions and comprehension of the soul. The inrlnences of nature in such a spot carries a deeper and purer consolation to the broken heart, than all man's eloquence. Aa, one by one, our friends are gathered to its bosom, it will become holier and more sacred to our hearts an.1 eyes, and will lift us up nearer and oftener to the abodes of the blest, than all the efforts of the pnlpit. All should look to it and cherish it as the last home and resting place of each one of us. No expense should be spared to preserve all its natural beauties and to improve and exalt them. The avenues to it should be made to correspond with it and be made inviting, that all might be induced to visit it often and imbibe its ennobling and sacred impressions. They are as potent of good as the formal and stated services of the altar. We owe a hinting debt of gratitude to the men who Secured the spot for the city, and they deserve a monument as public benefactors. We are also indebted for l lie pleasure of our daily visits in uo snmll !- gree to the diligent labors aud KrttpuloUJ care of the Janitor Sexton, Mr. Jno. Smith Gooderv, in presuming the excellent order and perfect neatness of the urounds. His term ol" service is alnnit to expire ; we I:lieve the public voice is almost unanimous for his re-appointment. In a lurge a.-setn-blage, recently gathered by a sad occasion, on the gronnds. there was not one dissenting voice to the general expression that he bad beeti a mint faithful public servant, and was the best man for the place. Nativk (iKU-KS We were preseutel vv.tenlav. bv Judire Law. with a bunch of sr W v W W9 f grapes of his own culture, from a native vine, fcaown as the Herbamont grape. Though ila-y are not quite so large as some species of the foreign grape, the clusters are taore compact, heavier in proportion to size, and more numerous on the vine than the exotir. Bat their excellence is their rich arasaatic flavor, and small pulp; the fruit seems to contain nothing but its juice and seed. It is a most delicious fruit for the table, aad w should suppose it would produce a richly flavored wine. In our admiration for products of foreign origin, we have slighted the claims of our native vines. Tbey have excellencies we have never proven; their fruits might probably in many instance be greatly improved by cultivation. There is no wine to equal the de--luaoos flavor of the sparkling wine made from the Scuppanaug grape in North Caro lina. Those who are familiar with it will pay higher prices for it than for the choicest brands of champagne. We apprehend we shall hare to emancipate ourselves from our yatjadioes in favor of foreign fruit, and also from the rules of European culture ; which man v hsve long believed unsuited to our sxxd and climate, before we can become the aaoat successful wine producers in the world. We must adopt our own native varieties and leave t'uem more to natnre. Our fertile soil doe net .require the close cropping of European niaf dressing. The Agricultural Bureaus of the Home department a Washington, iu 1857, sent an agent throughout all the South-western Sutss to New Mexico, Arizooia, and California, to collect cuttings of the native grape Trees. Upwards of 30,000 cuttings were coliee ted, embracing over a hundred varieties. Thane were planted in the Public Horticultural Qardens, uader the management of the Bureau, and are now growing in a flourishing condition. Next year roots and cuttings from them will lie distributed throughout the country for individual experiments in pronacatina them. From this collection of native vines, it is to be hoped that many varieties may 1 found better suited to our soil and climate than any we now possess. It might be well to give J udge Niblack a hint, that he might secure a share in the distribution of the Pocket, which by the next generation, will produce wine so superior, and in such abundance, as to drive both lager beer and whisky front its borders. tSX Joseph ( 'ham! -rs, son of Mr. Clar. em e Chambers, pay-master on the E k C railroad was killed by a Construction train in the neighborhood of Vineennes, yesterday, about noou. Young Chambers was about fifteen years old. He fell between two cars while the train was in motion and was instautly crushed to death. His body was brought home last evening on the freight train.
