EVANSVILLE, IND. Tl ESDAY MORNING SEPTEMBER 1:1 W For JaJg of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit. JOHN P1TCHKR, of Pojey. WM. F. PARRF.TT, of Wttrri.k. Prosecuting Attorney f ir th" same.. JAMES SHAN'KLIN. of Vanderburph A European Congress.--A Berlin iiK.r of the 23d nit. says that there in Banff! a strong feeling iu favor of a Congress not a Congress summoned like that wi Paris, to submit the exigencies of tne French intorot, hut a Congress where the whole situation ot affairs should be fully discussed, and resolutions come to altogether independently of the Conference of the cuief parties in Hie late war, excepting so far as the cession of Lombard)' by Austria is concerned. On this, Prussia and Russia are thought to be agreed, and there can be no doubt but that England will take the same view. The only matter settled as yet, appears to be the Lombard y frontier. The question of the Duchies, of the national debt of Austria, and some other important subjects, arc left for future consideration. Honors to whom Monors ark Dik. It is gratifying to see Hoosiers to whatever portion of the Republic they emigrate doicg honor and credit to their native State. We see by the Muscatine (Iowa) papers, that Thomas Ha una, for many years the esteemed and faithful Clerk of Perry county, who was well known to the members of the bar in this circuit has been nominated for county Judge of Muscatine county. The papers, in announcing his nomination, says: Mr. Hanna is a lawyer who stands high in his profession, and though only about three years a resident of the county, he has acquired a large and lucrative practice. He formerly resided in Perry county, Indiana, and was ft number of years Clerk of the Court in that county, discharging its duties in such an acceptable manner that the office was proffered to him still longer, but he preferred to come further West, and cast his lot with us. lie is no office-seeker. His present nomination was given unsought and unaskad. When it was hrst proposed to him, be declined; but finally, after numerous and repeated solicitations, offered to accept. As he is in every respect well qualified being a man of good souud sense, active business habits, and 'much experience in public affairs, and withal of irreproachable integrity the people may feel assured that in his bands the affairs of the country will be judiciously managed. Mr. Hanna held office in Perry, in the better days of the county, before the present political clique secured their ascendency there, since which there has been a sad change in its affairs. An Rtoprment and Chase. The Cairo (lazetu gives an account of the elopement of the young, beautiful, and fatbitss wife of Capt. Low, a Red river boatman. Having occasion to visit St. Louis, be took his wife with him. On their way up, they formed the acquaintance of a Viekshurg Doctor, who, struck by the leauty and graces of Mrs. Low, became devoted in his attentions to her. The three took lodgings at the aiue hotel iu St. Louis. Mr. Low having occasion to leave the city for a few day9 on business in the country, jerniitted his wile to remain at the hotel. During his absence, the lady and Doctor became intimate, aud an elopement was planned, and arrangements promptly made to carry it into effect. The doctor went to the clerk of the hotel, and told him that Mr. Low, who was detained by business at lllinoistown, had requested bim to settle the bill and assist in the removal of the lady and baggage to that point, preparatory to taking the cars lor Cincinnati. The settlement was unhesitatingly made, and the guilty pair left the city. The next day the husband returned, and not only found that his wife and the Doctor had decamped, but that they bad taken with them the sum of two thousand five hundred dollars, which had been entrusted to his care by a friend, to pay over to an other party! He imiuediately set out in pursuit; he followed his faithless wife and her adventurous paramour to Cairo, where he lost all trace of them. Relieving they had gone down the Mississippi, he started South. A few minutes after be bad left, it was discovered the runaways had gone up the Ohio thirty hours before he readied Cairo. The Captain is going South and the fugitives North, and the space rapidly widening between then. It is probable the S2,.Mu will be gone before the Captain overtake! them. -Aawuiau Mgf Tho early settler.-; are hoMin meet ings all over tbe Stab?, to renew oltl acquaintance?, anJ to revive eurly reminiscences. Tbe meetings prove highly interesting to those who participate, and to those who read their stories of tne past. The Pocket contains a large number of old pioneers, and we should think a meeting among them ai some appointed time and place might be sosde very pleasant to them, and would be highly gratifying to their decndanUaud successors to see. t hem together, and Ut hear their tales of their early ' . ..,, privations and laUir . ill not some ot their number move to accomplish the olject? It would add an attraction to the occasion ta have them assenihle during the District Fair, at some place necr, or tioii tne rair i.rounus We think tbe Ui rectors would prornle iUcommoilatioDS, and appropriate a part at least of one day to tinpleasure of attending to their proceeding.'-. t.'iopu u Feance. - The la;d European advices say the crops in the South of France hare lieen housed, and are reported to exhibit large deficiencies in the average yield. It is estimated that upon the entire crop ol wheat iu that country, there will be omv fourth less thun an average, so that it is considered there will not I much for exportation. There i.-, however, a laroe stWR of old wheat in tbe hands of the tarineis of Xormsndy and Brittany.

The I run Mountain Company recently -oiiiiim iu rl lniriiir for an artesian well at its hSBs?, to Supply their works with water. After panetrailng through '10 feet of limestone and ISO of tinstone, they again struck the iron ore, .1 lHH-eo mto it tor IPQ teet, wiien tney , gave it up as a profitless undertaking. They have since constructed a reservoir to economise the waters of a neighboring spring. The ore differs somewhat from that of Pilot Knob, but the process of mining, roasting, and smelting are identical. There are two furnaces in operation, both owned by the same company, and turniug out daily About twenty-five tons of iron. The company employs MOO workmen. The railroad passes over a portion of the "mountain, ' and within a few rods of it, on the same level, the mines are constantly at work blasting out and breaking up the ore. Shepherd's Mountain, near Pilot Knob, contains rich deposits of iron, but no considerable amount of mining has been done there. The ore of all these mountains is stratified, and they seem to bear evidence of volcanic formation. It is difficult to appreciate their almost inexhaustible resources. Professor Swallow, the State Geologist of of Missouri, asserts that the deposits of ore within a few miles of Pilot Knob and Iron Mountain, above the surface of the valleys, are sufficient to yield one million tons per annum of manufactured iron, for the next two hundred years ! Granite Knob, a few miles from here, is another of nature's freaks, in this region. It is a hill of solid stone, and on the surfiv some fifty acres of iand are covered with boulders of coarse granite,! turown into all sorts of erratic positions, and weighing from ten to a thousand tons. Large quantities ot mica are found in the viciuity. This deposit of granite in the midst of a limestone region is a rare curiosity, and, I think, unparalleled between the Alleghany and the Uocky Mountains. Lead milling has been carried on for the hist forty years at various points along the line of the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railway , but the metal is found only iu " pockets ' ot the roek, and does not exist in large masses, as through the great lead regions ot South-western Missouri I UK OPINION Ol" AMKHIC A, ON A VITA!. The elevation of the tops of the towers would thus le three hundred feet above the surface of the water.
