oitnial. EVANS VI LLE, IND. Mjl WEDNESDAY MO V. r Jtahjo of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit. JOHN PITCHER, of Posey. WM. f. PARRETT, of Warrick. Prosecuting Attorney for the same.. JAMES SHANKLIN, of Vanderburgh. 10"Our neighbor of the Enquirer agree ith as in the opinion that Mr. DougUu' ret paper is a conclusive historical argu ment in support of popular sovereignty, and a moat triumphant defense of the doctrines proclaimed by the author. It will do more to settle the question than all that has been written and said on the theme before ; it will add a cubit in the Enquirer' opinion to the intellectual stature of the Little Giant. The inquirer grows eloquent in its praises of the admirable paper and its able author. It views the principles he defends as eternal as the arches of heaven, and as true as me uospcts. To all of which we can heartily say, amen. But, in our anxiety to preserve this pleasant fellowship through the Presidential canvass, we are prompted to inquire what the Enquirer will do in defense of these admirable principles and their author, should Douglas be repudiated by the John L. Robinson convention at Indianapolis, and be rejected by the Charleston political conference ; and in place of popular sovereignty, the ultra Southern creed of Congressional intervention be substituted, as the platform of the party ? Are we in that case to have as we had in the last canvass the whole responsibility of defending the anti-Lecompton doctrines in this District? Will the Enqutrer deny ita present faith, and return to its old heresies, and, instead of working with us, oppose and abuse us ? We wish to know whether its devotion to Douglas and his doctrines is sufficient to induce it to adhere to him through disappointment ar.d defeat ; or if it be only a friend in prosperity and success ; only while there is a fair prospect of bis having the distribution of the emoluments and honors of the Federal Government. Ths Wibe Worker Dkfiatid. The result of the convention in Spencer, last Saturday, affords gratifying proof of the decline of the influence of party managers. The ruling clique of politicians called a meeting of the masses, with the programme of the procedings written out, and the names of their favorites inserted in their respective places, with the expectation of going through the farce of getting them endorsed in the usual way by the multitude without opposition or inquiry. But to the chagrin and mortification of the old wire pullers, a few men were present with independence enough to demand a free discussion and independent expression of the sentiments of the meeting to oppose their cut and dried proceedings, and upon the merits of the candidates. This did not suit the schemes of the managers, and rather than tolerate any freedom of action, they broke up the meeting in a row. It was a signal defeat of King Caucus, and shows that the reign of the caucusites is coming to an end. It afforded most conclusive evidence that the masses of the party are determined not to submit any longer to the gross impositions and tyranny of the party leaders. The candidates in Spencer, this season, will all run as independents, and each one will drpend on his own merits for success. The Post Master General has decided that no frank on mail matter canoe aiioweu to pass through the post office, except such as - .. . . ! 1 shall be in the handwriting of the person entiled to use it. The documents transmitted under a frank written by a clerk or employee of members of Congress, have been returned to the parties mailing them. The RepaWican Central Committee at Washington recently deposited a large quantity of political documents, under the frank of Mr. Covode, M. C, from Pennsylvania, in the post office at Washington, and the Deputy Post Master of that city refused to forward them on the ground that the frank had been written by a clerk. Mr. Covode was present and acknowledged the frank to be hia, but, as it was written by another, the Deputy Post Master persisted in refusing to mail them. An appeal was taken to the Postmaster General, who sustained the Deputy in his decision ; and so the Republican documents were refused a passage through the U. S. mail. WkW" Gen. Young, an eloqueut and influential politician of Cape Girardeau, Mo., has published a letter addressed to Hon. S. A. Douglas in which he earnestly appeals to him to declare himself an independent candidate for the Presidency, regardless of the proceedings at Charleston. Gen. Young tells him, in plain terms, that it is the design of the Lecompton leaders to sacrifice him? and thai there is no hope of his receiving the nomination of the Charleston Junto. He must rely on bis own strength with the people for success, ana commit his cause to bis real friends. Gen. Young tells him the uniform course of this Administration has been so .low, reveiingjand degraded in the vindictive pursuit of its own petty revenges sad personal aggrandizements, that he cum make no calculations of good from it. I From painful circuaestaiK-es, Which I rnubt nnt nvprrulft. I was MYVenU-d from re-w'w--W WW mT plyingto the communication of " On Hand " util the present tiBve. As it is now decided by a majority to relocate tue iair grounu, we must siioum; out
it is just such a submision as we all gave give and sectional dogmas and uucoiistituto Buchanan's misrule (acting by a majority tioual designs which obtain, in a greater or rule) and the infatnons English Kansas bill, less degree, in both the Ieinocratic and the They all fully exemplify the principle and ; Republican parties, and utterly opposed to exercise of ''might over right." Still, iu the party now in power, its aider, abettors, conformity to republican principles, we suh- and supporters. We presume this will he
mit. It is manifest that the change will greatly enhance the interests of the city of KvaasTille and the Railroad Co.; to which, as respects the advantages accruing to either, I would be the first to object ; but there is scarcely a more inaccessible place in the county for those of its citizens who represent the agricultural and horticultural interest, and it will virtually be a city air ground. In my simplicity and honest feelings of conscientiousness, I ventured to hope that the city and county would act reciprocally to wards each others' interests, and that the ! city especially would not forget the source from whence a large proportion of its wealth and prosperity flowed. But ideas of conscientiousness and justice are not very popular at the present day, and if wc have courage enough to advocate fair and honest principles, wo expect to be styled " old fogies.'' Well, be it so. Such were Wash ington, Jefferson, Franklin, and a host of other worthies. The feelings which I have expressed were produced by a retrospective view of those cherished " rights and privileges ' which they defended, and which, in this progressive age, we may prepare ourselves to be sacrificed on the shrine of ambition. It is quite problematical, bowevei, whether such progress will enhance either our interests or our business. I must not neglect to reciprocate favoi with my esteemed friend " On Hand," who very flatteringly compliments me on my gallantry and modesty. From a previous acquaintance, I can fully return the compliment in point of gallantry; but should any accusation be brought against him for modesty, I can bear testimony that he is quite innocent of it ; and if his rationality had kept pace with hia size and pretensions, he would not expect us to give up our rights for his burlesque. Happening, however, to know somewhat of his proclivities, I will overlook his childish freakforold acquaintance sake. Cmzss. Personal auU Political. The Democracy of Louisiana are iu deep trouble, and are not likely to be comforted. A meeting of anti-Slidell Democrats was held on the night of the 24th ult., at New Orleans, for the purpose of taking preliminary ateps to nominate a ticket for State officers, in opposition to the one adopted at the Baton Kouge Convention la?t May, and which is generally kown as the SUdell ticket. At this meeting resolutions recommending the opposition to the Slidell Democracy to organize and appoint delegates to meet at New Orleans on the second Monday in September, to agree upon candidates to be supported upou the Opposition ticket were passed. The Hon. F. K. Zollicoffer, of Tennessee, in a letter to the Baltimore American, denies bing a Jew. He says : " I am not a Jew, aud am not aware that any one bearing my name is of Jewish faith. This error may seem scarcely worth correction, yet I prefer that it should be removed, and beg that you will correct it."' It is pretty generally understood that the American party in the State of New York, instead of throwing away their votes upon an independent ticket, will select candidates from each of the two prominent parties and vote for them. They think, in this way, they may make themselves felt as a " balance of power" party. The following are the names of the Y.nglish cricket players who are to contest 11 against 22 in four matches, to 1 played at Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, aud Hamilton. I he players are : Caffyn, Lockyer, Grundy, Lillywhite, Carpenter, Wisden, Parr, Daft, Jackson, Hay ward, Diver, and Ctesar. The first six are of the United Eleven; the last six of All England Eleven. At the New Jersey Democratic State Convention, about the only thing in which the Democracy appeared unanimous was in recotnmendingthe name of Hon. WsL C. Alexander to the Charleston Convention, as a suitable Democratic candidate for the Vice Presidency in 18G0. The Albany, N. Yn Itegeucy are likely to have some trouble in packing the delegation to Charleston. The country Democracy are not likely to agree that the appointment of delegates shall be made by the State Contion at its session on the seventh of September. The friends of the district system arc bestirring themselves. A New York paper says that Mr. Wood, if he lives, will be the candidate for Mayor next December, and adds that there it no compromise, and no other position, city, State, or national, that could indued him to swerve from this purpose. We call that decidedly emphatic. Superintendent Pilsbury, of New York city, by his vigor io enforcing the Sunday law, has produced the happiest effects. Fori once, in that rendezvous of the lawlesi, the t . , Siibbath baa liecome a day of comparative lUtet. The Sational Intelligencer says : Tho wheat crop of this year must be tha largest ever raised in this country. A letter from Washington dated the 2d says : " Senator Fitch left yesterday for home. The strife in his State, between Dunham and Hendricks, for the nomination for Governor, requires the attention and efforts of all Democrats. The former is a Douglas,- and the latter a Bright man. Gov. Willard wisely keeps out of the way."' There was much excitement in Bow ling Green, Clay county, Indiana, a few days ago, in consequence of the arrest of a wealthy man named Lnther, on a charge of counterfeiting. He gave $1,000 bail for his appearance at the next term of the Circuit Court. Dr. Owen has been instructed by the State Board of Agriculture to begin his ge ological survey in the Southern portion of the State between the 15th of this month and the 1st of October. His compensation was fixed by the Legislature at $5,000. There is a remarkable provision in the Kansas constitution, which requires "all bills to originate in the House of Representatives, and be subject to amendment or rejection by the Senate."' T'-: -ovision is either an error in print, r . out an immediate amendmeu iiuciou. fution after its adoption, or an error in judt nt, which is as injudicious us the change it seeks to make is radical. Naturalized Citizens is Prussia. A letter from Washington says Gov. Wright has just informed the State Deptment " that it is not true, as reported by many of the American newspapers, that there are several American citizens in the Prussian army." Mr. Wright adds that he knows of none. The telegraph adrises us of a fatal shooting affray in Hopkinsville, Ky., in which Mr. W. W. Weston waa shot and instantly killed by Capt. James S. Jackson. It will be remembered that Capt. Jackson waa the late Opposition candidate for Congress in the Second District, and was do feated by Dr. Peyton. Gen. Caas is really a wonderful man. The Washington States thus discribes him: Aa we were passing along under that shady archway of green branches eastward of Lafayette Square, the other evening, we met the venerable chief of the State Department, walking as briskly and erectly as a young soldier just crowned with victory. He was dressed in a loose summer suit, and looked so blithe and happy that we could not forego stopping him in his promenade, and telling him how bale and hearty he was. As usual he was most pleasant. Cien.Cass is always so. We know no man so urbane in his deportment or so ready in speech, lie really appears, when in animated conversation, as a well preserved man of fifty, although he has seen his three-score and ten years. A Lakob Family. The Nashville (Tenn.) Adi ocate, in speaking ot a large camp meeting recently held in that vicinity, says that among the persons present was a church member whose name wits Lynch, a man ot wealth and great liberality M lie bore the burden of feeding and lodging " a large number who were on the camp ground. This Mr. Lynch must be a remarkable man. He has now nineteen children, and hia father had thirty-two, and at one time during the war thirteen of bis bouh were in the army. The State of Virginia, where he then lived, passed an act releasing the patriotic patriarch from all taxation. Tiie Cost or Sctportino a CuracH. The Century says that the average expense per annum to the members of the different denominations thronghout the United States' for the support of their different church services, is estimated to be about as follows: A Baptist and Methodist, 3 40 : a Presbyterian, $6 ; a Congregationalist $10 ; a Roman Catholic, $15 ; a Reformed Dutch, $22, and a Unitarian, $23.
