MoNDAY M0KN1NC SEP I'v MBEi: ( t For dodge of the Fifteenth Judicial 1'ircuit. JOHN PITCHER, of Posey. WM. F. PARRBTT, of Warriek. Prosecuting Attorney for the same.. JAMES SHANKLIN, of Vanderburgh. ' Our neighbor is advocating the nom ination of Matthew L. Brett of Davis county for State Treasurer, on the ground that the Pocket has long deferred claims to a share in the emoluments and honors of the State offices. If we are to have 1 Pocket candidate, let as have one well J jwn in it, and not one upon the edge, that we may lose unless it be kept closely buttoned. Why not take Turner Nelson of Posey for State Treasurer or Wm. H. Walker of Vanderbnrg for State Auditor; or Judge Law for Governor. These gentlemen would run well with the Democracy in the Pocket, and all have peculiar claims upon the party throughout the State for the powerful influence they have exerted in maintaining its ascendancy in this region tor the last ten years. New York Rkpl alicans. There appears to be serious difference between the N. V. State Republican Committee and some of the leading Republican organs in the State. The Committee insist, upon making the " aggressions of the slave power ' the allabsorbiug issue in the canvass of 1800. The roost sagacious and prudent of the newspapers iu the interest of the party, are that this Seward platform would elect Douglas, or an Independent candidate. They think it will be wise to wait the current events, and form no platform for the present at least. They say that 11 it is plain enough that the battle of I860 must be fought as the whigs fought their battle of 1848, without any specific platform at all." The State Committee make a call for the sinews of war. After detailing the measures which thej deem necessary to adopt, to tcure the success of the party, they add that " to give practical effect to the suggestions, an adequate amount of money will be required,'' which timely admonition em bodies a bint of the most important character. A Presidential can ass can no more be successfully carried 011 without the sinews of war '' than can a military cam paign. In both the "spoils " constitute, iudeed, a powerful incentive, but they are a reward never to be reached without adequate preliminary disbursements. Robt. Wirkleff, of Lexington, Ky., whose death was announced on Thursday by telegraph, was the largest liuid and slave holder, and the richest man in the State His age was near ninety, and be bad been resident of the same county since his youth. For three quarters of a century the name of Bob Wickliff has been familiar in the courts of Kentucky. But his repntation, says the Louisville Democrat, w as not based upon any genius that he ever displayed as an advocate, or any peculiar ability as a master of jurisprudence. He devoted his attention chiefly to the litigation of landed estates, and by that means became possessed of his vast property. The early land laws of our Commonwealth were exceedingly deficient, and the first settlers suffered immense privations from speculators and nttorntHundreds of pr:son3 became wealthy by engaging in the not creditable business of dispossessing the pioneers of the homesteads they had won from the savage and the wilderness, through the merest legal quibbles. He was once a member of the State Senate, but was never distinguised in the i litics of the State, except for bis bitter hostility to Mr. Clay. The heirs of his large estate are the wile of llot Wm. Preston. Minister to Spain, the wife of Col. John Preston, of Louisville, and the children of the late Col. A. K. Worley, of Lexington. Robert Wickliffe, Jr., died some years since. The English, French, and American embassies, in China, were preparing to proceed to Pekin, to take up their residence at the Capital. The Ktigluh Ambassador was to take a licet of small vessels and gun-boats to overcome nry opposition to his progress to the Capital, should it be offered. The Chinese Commissioners assured him there would be none. There was entire harmony among the representatives af the three powers. Mr. Harris, our Minister to Japan, U now at Shanghai, but will soon return in the Mississippi, and establish himself at Kanagowa, a few miles out of Jeddo, or in Jeddo itself. Since he has been there a gold snuff box, a present from the Cmeen of England in recognition of his services to the English Embassy, iu negotiating the English treaty, was formally presented to him on board the Mixsisxijpi by Mr. Alcock, the English Consul General tor Japan. Mr. Harris, yielding to the necessities oi American commerce, L.i appointed General Dorr, ot Boston, Consul at Kanagowa, and Mr. Welsh Consul at Nagasaki. It is significant of the future, that a mail strainer will soon run monthly Itetween Shanghai aad Japan. There is a report that the Prussiau Minister li il been Mobbed aud murdered in Pekin, but it wants niitiruiation. K,Hon. Isaac E. Moore, recently a member of Congress from Louisiana, a coo! and sagacious politician, says in a recent letter : Whatever issues may be made np in the North, East, or West, and whatever mottoes may be inscribed on their banner, we, of the South, will have to ntiuotu iMMm fr. ward Abolitionist, with Congressional jurisdiction or slavery and Dowlar, non-intervention by Congress, with the people to decide.

Should this ticket prove to be the one selected on the assembling of the Convention it will only furnish another proof of how little the people have to do in the selection of their State officers. HOU. IloBT. D. OwiSX ON SriBITCALlSM. We are informed that the work which the Hon. Robt. Dale Owen has iu press is de voted to the subject of spiritualism. What his convictions are upon the subject wc have not learnt ; but his talent for investigating abstruse and metaphysical subjects, and his ardor in searching for the cause of mental and physiological phenomena, have led him to a very thorough consideration of the sub ject ; whatever his conclusions are, they will be fearlessly declared. The work will contain tacts and reasoning that will expose the modern spiritual theory as a humbug, or lead sober meu to investigate its phenomena, in order to determine for ther selves if it be something new iu our philosophy of which they had not before dreamed. Its publication will be looked for with some interest iu this part of the State, where the author is so well known. The Fort Smith Times says the Atuerican Board of Foreign Missions have withdrawn their missionaries from the Cherokee and Choctaw Territories, " because the Indians hold slaves and the Territory is a shave Territory." " The churches that were planted by this Board, under pious men, connected with the Board upwards of forty years ago, are to be alwtmlonrd because the Secretary of the lioard, Mr. Treat, is an Abolitionist. " "He has been at war with the old missionaries in the Choctaw Nation for years, on the subject of slavery ; and these men have spent their lives in the mission service faithfully, aud at last this m m Irpht becomes Secretary of the Board, and these old ministers, with their chun diet, are to be abandoned and thrown aside, because of the existence of slavery in the Xation.v One would think if the " poor Indians' were sinking into the " barbarous customs of slaveholders,'' the missionaries should be increased, rather than withdrawn. Where there is the moral sin, there is the most need to preach the Gospel. The Memphis Avalanche says it is an offtMise atninst the laws of that city tor the proprietor of a flrinking siil mn or hoiwe of entertainment to sell, or even give away, liiptor to any person on MM Btfjhatlh The keeper of a saloon was, on the '-5;h in-t., fined ten dollars by the Recorder for giving liipior to some of his friends on the previous S.il.Uuh. Hni . Advices have been receiveil at Washington, from Mexico, which give reason to indulge the most tiatteriny; hopes that the .Juarez Government would oon be recognized by Great Britain. The sales of church property proceeded satisfactory, and promised so to replenish the Liberal excheiiuer as to render loans unnecessary. Six jer ceut. of the purchases are received in Government bonds, which command only ten to twenty per cent., so buyers get projerty at fifty- per cent, of the cash value. It is estimated that the sales ol tins property will wipe out nearly all the present indebtedness of Mexico. ANOTIIKR FOOL. The Bedford InJpendent says that Ebcnezer S. Thompson, late SherifT of Lawrence county, shot himstii while gunning a few days since. When he got Into the wooiis, n short distance from his house, he placed a cap on the guu uud snapjicd it to aacurLain whether the gun was loaded. It did not go off, and notwithstanding the newspapers all over the country are constantly full of acridenta and warnings, he placed his foot upon the hammer and Hew into the muzzle, when the contents of the gun were discharged into the upper part of his mouth and mangling it jn a horrid maimer. He is yet alive, bat there is n Bare possibility of his recovery.
