THURSDAY MORNING .... SEPTEMBER 1 Local and Miscellaneous. Wanted. - A good boy, to learnt the printing business. Apply at this office immediately. The Cannelton Band. The Band that came down with the excursionists on the Alida, regaled some of our citizens on Tuesday evening with some very sweet music. The highest compliment that could he paid them was the mistake made by many, that their performances were by one of our best bands. TtMhan Assoc rmtloa on tlse Subject at S Can ventton. The Teachers Association was in session at Fort Wayne last week. They discussed this question, " Should the State call a Convention to amend tbe Constitution?" and decided that such a measure was demanded br tbe interests of education in tbe State. Mr. McCulloch , President of the State Bank deUrered a well written address to the Association. He criticised the schools of the present day. He accused tbem of failing to teach patriotism and morals. " Our young men, to be sure, are taught poUtici, but not patriotism. In a masterly manner he alluded to tbe want of integrity among business men, and among public men. He spoke of tbe power of money in every part of our land, nor even excepting the churches. He held teachers accountable, in part, for this deliuquqpcy. He wonld have our children so taught that, when asked " whom they worship, and whom they serve," they should reply promptly to the former question, " The Great God," and to the latter, " Tbe Union." lie congratulated tbe ladies upon the increased facilities for their education, and be would have them improve every facility offered. IIo would hare them receive practical education; one that is iu every respect equal to that ot their brothers, lie bad no fear of intelligbl women getting 'out of their sphere." While be would not have them become politicians or voters be would open to them all the avt mi ot industry for which ueir mental and phy n al powers qualified tbem. Mexico. Tbe New Vork llraH low Mexican accounts which say that the Juarez government is continually gaining strength and efficiency, while the ntrMirent show .increasing disorder and weakness. The former are in possession of art the port:-, an.t zbe whole frontier of the Republic ; and aeventeeu out of the thirty-two States maintain the Constitutional Government. The . nationalizing the Church property everywhere very popular, and had imparbd great strength and energy to the I Gov. fame nt of Juarez. He had taken another step towards the overthrow of Church tyranny, in declaring marriage a civil contraU. Tbe guucnU jajlicy w hu h the Constitutional Government is pursuing demonstrates that a true revolution of Mexico is now going on, and that tbe final struggle ihete between political ideas of the ecclesiastical and military class is rapidly approaching. James Gordon Bennett is proposed as thje Democratic candidate for Mayor of New Vrk. O09 objection urged is, that he is too oM. The Tribune, his warmest pontifical opponent, sajs that this is disposed of bj the tact that Mr. Bennett conducts a "aaoras'ng journal in this city, which circulates ererj day 25,000 or 30,000 copies, it a moderate calculation. Tbe man who can do that might easil j 1 Mayor of New York, Brooklyn, and Jersey City all at once, and still hare time every afternoon to take an excursion to the loveiv shades of Wash- - w " - ing Urn Heights. , 4 aSa," The Lousrille Courier, in speaking of Mr. DaafaW arttcleon squatter sovereignty, recently published in Harper's Weekly says: No more will Harper or the ledger tie rilled with biood-and-ihunder stories. The days of the writers of light literature will be at an tad. Squatter sovereignty witl hereafter usurp tbe place of love sick 3tttr.es and sentimental poetry. Tbe gifted SyWanus Cotib will retire and give place to the thivalric Wise, and the accomplished Edward Bualiine will be superseded by the brilliant Douglas. A German, named Finnessey, re cently caused the death of his wife in Cincinnati by )ong continued brutal violence. The husband and wife were intemperate. They bad two boys of eight and ten years old. When the officer and bis party arrived at Finnessey's room, on Friday siht, they lound Fit nissey drank on tbe floor, with a bottle of whisky near him, his wife's dead aad bruised body on tbe bed, and the two little boys nestled up in a corner of the room. Used as these official gentlemen were, to scenes of misery and horror, this sight was sa revolting as to affect them strongly. SP Dcmocratic Stat Co.vt-eeios. It has been prix laiuied through tl e State that the tiiue bar the meeting of the State Cooveni ion had beea changed from the '.'th to the 1 1 th of January by the State (ieneral i'omuiiUee. Mr. John L. Robinson and Mr. Develia say it is no wen thing. No meeting of the committee has lanen held, aud no change made ; and they intimate that there is little probability that any change will be luade. Chiiitopher C. (iraham, formerly of AVarrick county, who wai appointed Register of a Land Oftice in Minnesota by PresiUeut Pierce, has been noraiuatetl for Congress by tbe Democratic Convention of bis Instrict. Tne Cincinnati 'Enquirer says : We have received a card from this gentleman in reply to the article published yes terday, from the Evausville Enquirer, respecting him. Mr. Dodge declare that it is true that lie was removed from tbe Pension Office because he was friendly to Mr. Doujfhis, no 1 that private reasons had nothing to do with it. . It if probable that Mr. Dodge knows more about the causes of his own removal, than the editor of our Enquirer could learn at Terre Haute. If the true and tried fiiends of Douglas are not tolerated even in the humblest positions at Washington how i it that Thomas A. Hendricks is allowed to spend his official time in traversing the State, making loud professions of deration to Douglasistn ? The reply is. that his friendship fur Douglas will do no harm to Iecomptonism t The Icara&d entleuuti who were appointed to ascertain w hat whs the trouble with the Crolon Water iu New York City, came to the conclusion that the recent oftensive condition of tbe Croton water was owing to a rapid an 1 abundant growth oi a microscopic-like plant, which altounds iu a volatile, odorous prineinlr, soluble to some ' ' I extent .u water. f'roia a MmrrhamW mml Slawai SSrers ' JvmrtuU. The splendid passenger packet John (iault will be down this morning for Cairo and way points. The John Gault is deservedly one of the most popular boats ou the riveritidlier officers among the most polite. The weather, yesterday, was tool and pleasant. The river continues to fall slowly.
