TI KSUAY SUKSlXlJ . Al iil T Local and Miscellaneous, Tttc Steamer Poland. The following is the mendacious attempt j of the fellow who runs the Packet Poland to vindicate his heartless and brutal nm duct. There are a few base, sordid, intevl- l ing wretches specimens of false humanity who utter falsehood by a law of their nature as other men uaturaliy speak the troth: Rlitors Louisville Courier : The Kv insTille Journal publishes a statemef to the effect that the steamer Poland refused passage to a pauper family, brought to that city (ETftMTille) by the J. H. Done from Cairo, and eenaures the officers ot the Poland in no measurable terms. These are the farts I The "family " was made np of three women, one man, and three children (one of which was a mulatto). They applied for passage to Louisville, saying they came from back of Evansville ; that they were destitute, and had no means of making a living. There being no one to vouch for them, and knowing the responsity of public carrier in such matters, I, of course, refused to allow them to come aboard. The municipal laws of Louisville, and of most of the towns along the Ohio, impose heavy penalties on steamboat owners for landing paupers within their precincts. In view of the many acts of Charity in carrying destitute personf from point to point, they should certainly be allowed the privilege of protecting themselves from paying heavy fines where they would perform such acts ot charity. These were my reasons for refusing passage to the ''pauper family" in question, and which, on reflection, I hope will be satisfactory to the editor of the Evansville Journal and all others interested. I was not applied to by a citizen or citizen of Evansville to take this family. R. Ukacky, Card. Steamer Poland, August 25. These are the simple truths told to the heartless signer of the alwve card by the sufferers themselves, and their statement was corrutiorated by circumstances, and their appeal was supported by a humane poliee oflieer and other respectable iti.ens. The family went from Jefferson county, Kentucky, to one of the extreme border counties of Missouri and squatted upon a quarter section of public land. -They labored hard for two tears ami expended all their means in making a clearing and building a home. When the time for the payment of their land came, they had nothing to redeem it with, ami a hearttfss specs later en teied it aud drove them from tfanr toeatio. With very little mean they m icjf u attempt to return to their old home and friends. On the route, the men and women lappa and worked to get means to pay their way. Hut overtaken by .ickness, they were reduced to ulUr destitution and helplessness. Some humane Onpitain took them on Itoard and brought them to Cairo, where Captain Davis found them, and moved by their sad story, took them on his boat, fed and nursed them and brought them to this city, where our citizens and authorities, instead of prosecuting him for bringing paupers to the city, received them gave them shelter and food, and raised a small purse, enough to pay their expenses from Portland to their former home, the residence of the husband's brother, four miles from Louisville. This is a tale that needed no corroboration to any humane eye that beheld the group which was told by the sufferers to the officers of the Poland when they drove the af flicted family from the boat. to excuse their inhumanity, when asked to permit them to remain, they grossly libelled the people of Louisville and ot Kentucky, by declaring that the authorities would inevitably prosecute and tine them for carrying home a family of unfortunate, sick, and destitute citizens of their own county. Will the editor of the Courier, who endorses Gracey's card, endorse the slander, and say the danger of the penalty was a sufficient justification of the act I The mulatto spokeu of was an infant, and might have been a slave to the poor family ; no one here asked the lot it held in the common suffering, nor wished to disturb its relations to the afflicted family. But the men w ho were heartless enough to drive a virtu tuous and suffering family fromcould them as we are credibly informed redeem from heavy charges the baggage of vile prostitutes take them without charge make a brothel of their boat and land the polluted subjects of their lusts, penniless, upon the wharves of Louisville without any fears of fines from the authorities. There is no pleasure nor profit to us in acting thus, as the public censors and instigators of a ift of base men, whose crimes can only be punished by exposure and applying the scorpion whip of the press to their naked backs. We have no feeling or mterest in such affairs but what every citizen has; we often don't know the men, except through the public reports of their acts. It is an unpleasant public duty, in the performance of which, where it is honestly doue, the press should have the support of the community. Capt. Caffrey, of the Katr French, like Capt. Davis, of the Done, received the family on board; fed them.and ministered kindly to the wants of the invalids; aud said that occasions to serve the distressed in running his boat gave him more satisfaction than the profits of the trip. Capt. Caffrey is as courteous and attentive as he is generous and humane. Ladies aud families may be entrusted to his rare, with the full assurance thai they will be safe under his watchful guardianship.
