What we most lack to make our city an attractive place of reside ace, arc pleasant drives in the vicinity. One-aalf of the year our conmou roads are impassable with mud, and a large portion of the remainder they are enveloped in clouds ot dust. They have all been laid out upon the cheap est utiliurian plan to serve imperious neces- 1 sies, when the population had neither means nor time to think of pleasure and re- ; Times have changed wealth creation. and luxury have increased, and occasional relaxation and amusement are now recognized as essential wants for the health and happinessof all classes, and which men in every

dollars for everv dollar of the original pur- , ehase money. The mistake is now irremediable within the present city limits ; and the public spiritof the present day is as ealen- , culating and selfish as it was among our predecesJrs; and we don't feel like buying and . o ! building a park beyond our present limits ; only for our successors to enjoy. But a beautiful and commodious avenue, extending from the streets of the city into the coun- j , . , try, for a pleasant drive or promenaae, can be e: joyed by the present gencratiou who . u rrat enmo rotnrn f r it4 rxnenil- ! ivii iu.itu SV . . i i ... itures, while it is provioing, wim ptrental care, for its heirs and Baeeenon. A new road has been laid out and ordered by the public authorities to be opened, lead- j ing from Chestnut street to Oak Hill, a diatanre of one and n half miles. It ia proposed to construct it in a manner to make it ' .1 a pleasant avenue for a walk or drive, by giving it width, and planting its sides thick with shade trees. It will be a public work, ia the pleasures and benefits of which every resident and visitor of the city can participate. The road is over very eligible ground, the proprietors of which give the right of way, and the whole expense of the plan will uot exceed, we are told, thc rum of 3,000. So great a public blessing to old and young, rich and poor, cannot be secured in any other way so cheap. Our citizens should insist on the immediate execution of the work. It will shorten the distance to our beautiful cemetery grounds about onethird. It is opposed, because it i3 feared that it may divert a few country wagons from passing the doors of some small grocery stores at the upper end of Main street. It may also disturb a 6ccluded neighborhood enveloped in the stenches of filthy slaughter houses, and cause the removal of their nuisances. The health, pleasure, and interests of the city are to be sacrificed to gratify the selfishness of three or four persons, w ho, having no desire for the decent comforts and innocent amusements of life for themselves, cannot appreciate the want of them in others. The public voice demands that the road should le built, and there is no reason for dc'.ayi-1 tho executiou of the order already on record. A Committee from the A?hlander?' Association of New York, called on the Hon. John Minor Botts a few day3 ago, and requested his consent to become a candidate of the opjiOaition to the Democracy for the Presidency. Mr. Botta replied at some length, stating that he did not think it would be a difficult matter to manage the affairs ol' the flovernra?nt. There was no necessity fur involving the country in difficulties abroad and quarrels at home. He thought there was need t' a change in the Adminiitration, and great need of improvement. He concluded by saying "If it is the pleasure of my countrymen to confer this high and honorable distinction upon me, I will accept it with pride, and I hope with a resolution that could not be shaken, never to be turned by any influences that might be brought to bear upon me, from what I believe to be the honest j.ud faithful discharge of all duties that might devolve upon me." Iftjgy (Jur old Democratic friend, Dr. Geo. B. Graff, formerly of Gibson county, and recently appointed M Receiver at the Land Office at Da.-otah, Nebraska Territory, has become sole proprietor and editor of thc Dacotah Herald. The paper advocates Jo Lane's pretentions to the Presidency. The Doctor arrive ! at his old home last week, aud received a cordial welcome from his former neighbors. He proceeds to Washington on business connected with the Indian affairs of Da.-otah. He thinks Nebraska the finest country in all the world. Phillips, of the well known firm of Phillips, Sampson k Co., booksellers and publishers, iu Boston, died on Saturday evening, at his residence in Brookline. The deceased had been in ill-health for several months. His age Was 4G years. It is stated that the publication of the Wise-Dounelly letter has actually strength ened the Governor in Virginia. He has, of course, mortally offended both Dougla; and Buchanan, but the question still remains whether he will uot be all the stronger for boldly repudiating both, from the outset.
