The rowdy and blackguard who commands the packet Poland came to our office yesterday, with, a gang of bis tinkers, to threaten personal violence, for publishing the (acts, to which twenty respectable citizens can testify, of bis brutal refusal to take a sick family on his boat to Louisville. His Mastering threats only confirmed the character, already given to him, of a ruffian and heartless wretch, unworthy the support and countenance of any community. The fellow, after a fit of impotent bluster, quietly backed out of the office, followed by bis valiant backers. The suffering family rejected by the Poland laid over here till Monday, and was then kindly taken on board of the Kale French, and carried to Louisville without charge, or any fear of being prosecuted there for a borttane and generous act. The contrast in the conduct of the two men and boats is not so great as the contrast in the noble character of one and the infamy of the other. It id duty of very community to mark and remember such men. .We were fully aware of the correctof our strictures upon the couduc t of some of the Louisville boatj w hen we made them. We desire to have nothing to do with Mr. Carter. Many in our city, no doubt, regret having formed his acquaintance, and would be better off, pecuniari! v. . had they never met the man. Laajrtaarace makes up many deficiencies; but impudence will hardly make Mr. Carter.- assert iosss '-e taken in preference to the siateuiehie of some of the oldest and U-.-i business meu in the city. We could give this self-i ontituted gentleman the iinti.uetv to- -0 uon h desires, were the details less naoscatiug to us and disgusting to the public The prosperity of our city has been grwat . 1 Ij increased through the influence of our packets. Tt is the interest of our business men to do all in their power to sustain them ; and tbey should frown upon all underhanded attempts to break tbera down. We are Sure all that our packets desire is fair plav. Tbey do not expect to receive more for carrying freight than it is worth, tiutwben they have consummated an agreement with men to carry their freight, they dislike interlopers to come in and put the prices down for the purpose of taking the freight from them. We believe such efforts wiH be treated with the same contempt that greeted the one recently made by the authorized agent. T lie Attauttc Monthly. The September number ol this choice magazine has come to band, tilled with the huest literature of the day. Its table of contents presents the following attractive bill of fare : "The Life and Works of Ary ScbefHer, ' author unknown ; " A Yisil to Martha s Vineyard,' by Mrs. Austin; "letoler to May' poem by Florence Percy; "The ! These notices arc said to be the ablest that have ever graced the pages of the Atlantic. Mr. Emrich, on Division street, is digging a magnificent Lager Beer Cellar, to be ased in connection with his brewery. He is making arrangements to hrew and preserve a superior quality of beer. A couple of Germans were tried in th.Common Pleas Court, yesterday morning, charged with stealing a gun. One w as acquitted, and a nolle entered iu the ease of the other. In the afternoon, another German, charged with itealing a horse, saddle, and bridle, from Setcbell k Bowles, was tried. He hired the horse to go to Boonrille, but, changing bis mind, weut to Owen:boro ; front there toCloverport, where he swapped him off. He then weut to Louisville, where he was arrested. His attorney tried to make the case one of a breach of trust, only. But the jur) -brought in a verdict of guilty, and he was sentenced to the penitentiary. A Monstfr Mki.os. Our friends, Messrs Z. H. Cook k Son, are determined to wind up the melon campaign in grand style. They peat iif, yesterday, one of the finest we ever saw. It weighed all of M pounds, and, the boys say, was one of the lajst flavored it was ever their good fortune to partake of. Tbey are connoisseur? in the quality of melons, and their taste may b relied on. We presume the .Messrs. Cook have a lew more left of the same kind and quality. They are decidedly the best of the season. The Democracy of Ohio are endeavoring to defeat Judge Gboison for the Supreme Bench, because he formerly owned aluvej in Mississippi. The principal documents exbihited against him are billa of sale of negroes disposed of by the Judge some fifteen yeara ago. This demagoguiain will aa likely to meet with the fate it deserves.
