EVANSVILLE, IND.
THURSDAY MORNING. AUGUST X For Judge of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit. JOHN HITCHER, of Posey. WH. F. PARRETT, of Warritk. fjr The Booarillc Democrat, which was so justly severe, last week, in condemnation ; of the rule of political cliques in our elections, from a constable to a President, seems, this week, to have forgotten its honest doctrines, and defends the nomination of a Circuit Judge by a county caucus, notoriously organized and controlled by a few party leaders. It thinks our real against the nomination of partizan candidates for judicial offices is " new born." It is, however, as old as ourselves, and we have uniformly and persistently denounced the practice ever since we could wield a pen. In the canvass of 18M4we refusedto support either ticket for the Supreme Court, because Iwth were partisan nominations. We condemned theaction of the recent Perry county clique, because the reason they gave for their choice was that their nominee was an undeviating and devoted adherent of their party, and as such they pledged him their gipport. A man whose partisan ardor has led him through all the devious and unscrupulous ways ot modern political partizanship if honest in his devotion must be unfitted, by his mental constitution, for Judge in one of the highest judicial seats in the State. The rettons alkgkl by the caucus for supporting Judge Parrett, are those which would con demn him in the estimation of intelligent and upright men. The nomination, we thought, would, therefore, do him more harm than good. We have not the slightest taint of political prejudice in our choice of the two candidate:. If Mr. Parrett is as " capable and honest as John Pitcher, we shall most sincerely rejoice in his success, and shall be glad to know that the District has two men, so worthy to fity the office, before the people as candidates. Wc condemn all attempts to enlist partizan support for either. We contend for placing the choice solely on the score of qualifications and ability. We know nothing about Judge Pitcher's present political convictions or affiliations. He was, years ago, an Old Line Whig ; he has kept aloof from all modern isms, but has acted of late, wo understand, with the conservative Democrats. He has been elected, without opposition, Common Pleas Judge, in a strong Democratic District. As far, therefore, as honest Democrats allow their choice to be influenced by party attachments, he has been, and is still, acceptable to them. We know that he will be supported by some of the ablest and most influential and long tried Democrats in the lower end of the District. It is the com. mon practice of such sheets as the Boonville Democrat to attribute the course of this paper, in all mutters where it comes in con flict with their partisan interests, to the political prejudices of its editor, though he has acted for ten years more uniformly and consistently with the honest and conservative Democrats, than those who charge him with anti-Dcmocratie prejudices. The Journal is an independent paper, that attempts to speak honestly aud fearlessly according to the measure of its ability on all subjects affecting our State and local iuterests, without any regard to cliques or parties. We give the names of both candidates for Judge a conspicuous place, and, while speaking of their relative qualifications, we shall be unbiassed by political feeling, lxxause we do not know whereiu tbey differ in their own political opinions, or from those we have supported. We are persuaded the people will make a wise selection, and if Judge Parrett shall be elected anil bring to the bench as great a devotion to duty the same candor and as much ability as either of the late incumbents, Smith or burke, displayed, no one will remember or care whether be be a Democrat or Black Republican. There seems to W a discrepancy tlween the Auditor's and Treasurer's retorts, in Warrick County, which has at tracted the attention of MM of the t:xpaying fanner, and tliey are probing the sonin .1 maimer that makes those officers squirai. Mr. Moore, of Booneville, came to their rescue and attempted to divert attention by, calling the person inquiring into the matter an " ignorant farmer. " This 'ignorant firmer" replies in the Boonville Democrat in a style that shows however he may be ignorant in some things he is pretty well ported its to how theaccountsof Auditor and Treasurer should le kept and adjusted, lie suggests the propriety of investigating the transactions of those officers for the lat tour years. The idea of paying couuty taxes to the amount of eight or ten thousand dollars a year, and that, too, when no State tax is assessed, is becoming somewhat disagreeable to the honest yeomanry of that county, and they propose looking into matters to see how it comes. Warrick county is not the only one, we apprehend, its which the Treasurer's and Auditor'sjjbook? fail Bto agree. But until the people learu to select their couuty officers on the score of merit and ability, instead of their devotion to particular parties, they may expect to reap the fruit of those official blunders, whin seem to have occurred in nearly erery county in the Pocket. Whlat TrRMXU to C'utAT. The Cincinnati G izette snye: " Dr. W. B. Thompbou, of Fytteville, Brown county, has shown in a head of wheat, injured by frost, on oue side of which, where it evidently grew, there is a small head of cheat, containing seven well formed seeds. It is a botanirftl curiosity, to say the least, and the fat t of u bent and cheat growiug together 011 the same stalk, in this instance, we can vouch for." The important question is, does wheal ever degenerate into cheat '

It opposed and defeated the passage of a law at the last session of Congress, securing homes to actual settlers on our public lauds. It has, for the purpose of inamiaiug political power, forced upon the couatry the agitations of questions affecting slavery, calculated Lolisturb.the harmony aud to endanger the perpetuity of the Union of tho States. It has attempted to extend and to perpetuate slavery in Kansas by its efforts to force the Lecompton Constitution upon the people of that Territory contrary to their wishes. It has become corrupt and extravagant in the management of the affairs of the State and National Governments. It has failed to give that encoargement to the construction of a Railroad to the Pacific, and to the Improvement of Rivers and Harbors of national character, which the' interests of the country demand. It has, for partizan purposes, permitted persons from Indinna to occupy seats in the 1' ni ted StatesSenate, and to vote as Senators, who were never chosenby the Legislature of this State. The paper is handsomely printed, and has an able corps of editors. If it fulfils the expectations that have been formed of it, the Atlas will have an important influence in the politics of the State. 1 A Store and Nine Barns Btrnt. A villain named Henry Chapman set on fire and destroyed no less than nine barns and one store on Monday night of last week, on the road from Preston City, Conn., to North Stoning ton, and attempted to shoot a young man named Charles Wheeler. He was shot while attempting to fire Wheeler's barn, but succeeded in getting away. He was found dead the next day, with nearly one hundred wounds in his body. The Norwich Bulletin
wiys of the desperado: Henry Chapman is about thirty-two years of age. Some ten years ago he married a daughter of Mr. Eleazer Wheeler. His conduct was such that, five years ago, she wns compelled, for her own safety, to "swear the peace" against him. Duriug the five years alter his marriage, he was very intemperate ; and, when drunk, was ugly and dangerous. His disposition, at all times bad, was toad; worse by liquor. For the past five years, his wife had refused to live with him, and, with her three children, ha.- stayed with her father. He has Imtod altout Preston and Notwich lately. lU Saturday last his wife served a petition for divorce, and Chapman returned from Noauk on Mouday, in a perfect rage against his wife, her family, and every body else. Out of pure revenge he applied the torch to the kirns referred to. The people of that vicinity, when the news of his death became generally known, "drew a long breath, and thanked t;od for their deliverance.' Indiana Polttlce Abroad. The Wellington correspondent of the Philadelphia fYssS says : The contest for the Democratic Gubernatorial nomination iu Indiana, between the Hon. Thomas A. Hendricks, present Commissioner of the Laud Office, and Cyrus L. Dunham, former member of Congress from that State, has Income quite animated. The Presidential question may become involved in the struggle, and as both candidates have been closely identified with the Administration, an interest is felt as to theit position on the question arising out of the election for President next year, when the people of Indiana will also be called npon to vote for Governor. There seems to le a fixed determination on the part of the Democrats to submit to no equivocation in regard to this issue. A good story is told by a well known politician in this city of his meeting with an Administration man who had been very noisy and public in his abuse of Dougltts. Said the former to the latter, "I have just returned from a tour through New York and the Northwest, and I find that, however unpleasant it may be to admit it, the Little Giant is carrying all before him, and there is no use in resisting him. I tell you this as a great secret." The Administration man, fairly caught by the apparently confidential character of the communication, put his mouth to the ear of his informant and said, in a whi?per, " This is exactly my opinion, and I only wish to heavens some one had the pluck to tell Mr, Buchanan the same thing, g A QKBM Dejim rat. The election of General Houston as Governor of Texas is claimed by the organs a a triumph of the so-called National Democracy. Runnels .is the regular nominee of the Convention, M he was at the previous election, when he beat Houston some 10,000 votes. R nunc Is success then was n victory ; Houston's success now, is still a victory for the same party. The Chicago Timet is gratified at Mr. Houston's success, because he is a better Democrat than his opponent. As an evidence of the genuineness Of old San Jacinto 8 Democracy, the Tunes says he opposed the Nebraska-Kansas bill fought General Pierce's Administration approved of faction in the Democratic party favored the Know-Nothings, aud now, has defeated the regular Democratic nominee! Singular claims to Democracy. An extensive fire occurred iu the Government machiue shops, Washington City, last week. Three large frame shops were entirely destroyed, throwing a larie uumber of hands out of employment. The valuable machinery in the auops aud other material destroyed are variously eiti mated at from twenty to fifty thousand dollars. The States says : An enormous lathe, used for turning the marble columns of the Capitol Extensions, aud the original cost of which was $12,UUU, if Brack damaged. A large amount of the beautiful Tenuessee marble, ready cut in slain, and which was to have been removed to-lay, was also much injured. Three derricks, which cost $-',500 each, were so much charred as to be unfit for use. It was regarded us very fortunate that the construction of the sheds was so light that they did not retain the he;u o,T enouch to have , completely ruined the tools and maehinerv. The first premium for wool at the iatc Wool Growers' Meeting at Cleveland, was awarded to Mr. Alexander Black, of Putnam county, in this State. He had to meet iu competition the wool of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, and we believe of New York, yet his enterprise and skill enabled him to show a better product than any of them. The Lafayette Courier says that Jas. O'Brien, ex-Mayor of that city, wasaccidentally shot while hunting on Thursday erenft ,r- Batey. The load of shot struck him on the back part of the head and glanced off above the right ear. He fell at first as if dead, but afterwards recovered. Whether the wound is likely to prove dangerous or otherwise is not stated. The Xjcaraui a Thansit Roi te. Arrangements have been concluded for the opening ot the .Nicaragua trausil route uuder the Vannick charter. Tho first loatswill leave New York and San Francisco on the fdhof October next, when the Johnson mail contiact goes into operation. The first loat will be the Herman. Every effort will be made to render the route the most popular one. Railroad Stocks. The New York stock market this week has been very buoyant in railway slocks. The speculative fever u confined almost entirely to railway shares, which rise in price as rapidly as they sunk a few months ago, in public estimation. The upward movement, as a general remark though stimulated to a great extent by purchases on short interest, is assisted, undoubtedly, by public support. Deafness. By an advertiicment in our columns, it will lc seen that Dr. J. F. Smith, an eminent Aurist, can be consulted for al few days at the Sherwood House. The Doctor brings testimonials of the success of his treatment of diseases of the car, in al, parts of the country. Cases of long standing "and of a most obdurate character have been permanently cured or greatly alleviated by his skill. Prof. Dimitry, of New Orleans, has recently been appointed by Mr. Buchanan Commissioner to Central America, to arrange the various complicated questions pending between the two countric.
