Two events, which show bow both the antagonistic! paruies in Europe regard this vicinity, that have not attrac ted the at- . i j o.M1i..:..ni oi aurupe to ito, iuu iwcu t . . id the overthrow of the church and its P . ftttU orders, one of the richest motk- cotamunitiea of Europe a brother hood of Benedictines, possessing several millinnq nf nrooertT in one of the Catholic cantons of Switzerland became alarmed for the safely of their property and society, a-d sent out agents to this country to select an asylum to which their wealth, with their members, might be removed for safety. The i agents selected a tract of country on Anderson river, in the counties ot Perry and Dubois, where they purcbasad some 6,000 or 7,000 acres of the broken valley and hill land of that region. A delegation of the order came out, after the purchase, and began extensive improvement-; n on the property. At first there was great zeal in labor, and it was announced that the entire monastic community was preparing 10 emigrate; but as the old order of things was restored in Europe, the idea of emigration seemed to be abandoned. Hat the improvements of the new purchase were continued ; and though reduced in vigor and extent hae gone on constantly. A considerable amount of land has been cleared and cultivated ; extensive and expensive buildings have been erected ; one for a college, designed to accommodate several hundred pupils. Among the monks ..re a number of able aud learned teachers. A school was or ned several years since, but it has not nourished and little or no effort has been ma ie to make it known. The property appears to have been obtained, prepared, and is now held in reserve for some expected event in the revolution of time. A small community of the order still live upon it, and occupy themlelves with the gradual improvement of the land, and laying a foundation for their college by extending the benefits of .heir elementary school. The political reaction of 1849 and 1850 in Europe that brought peace mi safety to the cLurchand its adherents drove thousands of iw assailants into exile. The Red Republicans, who were obliged, on the restoration of the oid dynaysties to llee, sought refuge whre the priests had come to find it. And it is remarkable that the largest and wealthest organizations of Red Republicans were led by a course of events to locate and build their future city of refuge upon a spot within a few milt s of where the Benedictine monks had taken up their abode and erected their asylum. They are not irore than ten or twelve miles apart the boundaries of Perry county inclods nearly all the possessions of botli the Tell City Company and the Anderso.i Monastery, Here is presented a riagalat and interesting spectacle of the jonfidence which both of the hostile political parties in Europe setm to have in the liability, order and peace of the only Democratic government on the earth. The church, the pillar of absolutism seeks for security neither nn ler the undisturbed despotism of the FstfifM autocrat, or in Catholic Mexico, but under the aegis of a Protestant Republic. Here Umm who rt dial all authority in religious beU'f, and those who contend for the infalibility and absolute authority of the PopC in religion, set down, side ly side, and live in friendly intercourse as neighbors: both performing the duties of good citizens to the same jovernment. There can be no stronger testimony to the excellence of a system of human government, than the example of peace and concord produced by it among such antagonistic elements in population. Cibccit Ji DOEsnip. Many upright Democrats of Tcrrj county condemn, in severe terras, the attempt made by the recent convention in that county to make the tion of a Circut Judge a parli.au qrtioa. The caucus nominfltiou of Jtdgi Patretl will be a serious injury to bis prospects. We are sorry to learn, a!-o. that the evidences of ability he gave, and his manner of presiding upon the brem i; did not make a mvorable impre?s:on either in Crawford or Pert. Great allowance was made fur youth and inexperience, but man-sturdy oM Dta ocrats at the Court Houses in those counties hook their beads and said there was none of the right sort of timler in the chair hlled by Parrett for ajadgs on tnat beaeb M We can't vote for such a man in Opposition to old Join Pitcher, if our party iU,c- recommend him," was the observation of a large number of staunch Democrats in both the upper counties, after the adjournment of the court. Judge Pitcher was solicited by many 1 e ; - 1 - iog Democrats to become a can iidat. . He consented to offer bis services to the District with the understanding that the canvass was to be made free from any party affiliation:?. The nomination of Parrett, by a party caucus in Perry, was a disregard of the understanding upon which Judge Pitcher consented to run. By the time Judge Parrett goes through his circuit, the jieople will be able to form a juot opinion of his abilities and character, and will be fully qualified 16 select the best candidate. The stalks are now a green a3 in July, and the ears by aid of the recent copious showers are growing to an unusual length. and filling out to the tips with the finest grain that ever grew. The only possible danger to the crop is a very early frost. There are spots, of a few mile in extent, that base been entirely missed by the showers, where the corn looks wretchedly ; but these places are too limited to affect the genera! result. In Warrick and Spencer, and in Hci. '.er-i n an 1 D.iviesj, opposite to them in Kentucky, the corn crop will be the larMl ever harvested. Farmers are talking ol selling their coming crop at the old price of twenty-five aDd thirty cents per bushel. The Wabash Valley wili probably turu out this year the largest corn crop that ever gfl w upou its fertile surface. The abundant yield of corn must keep the price of wheat low, and have an effect upon the value of pork. The coming year will, ap parently, be one of low prices ; and the farmers who yield first to the altered ciri uMtaacc of the times, will be the wisest and do the best in the end. Let the crops go forward early and pay the Eastern debts, and by enabling the vYea'cm niercliauts to be prompt, Western credit wili be firmly established; our ;,oods wiil be bought on better terms, and we shall get them cheaper ; and by establishing faith in YV astern prosperity, good faith, and promptness, we can draw any amount of Eastern capital into the country that we may need for the development of Western resources. fiiraf The following paragraph from the Slat- SntMMf shows the faith of the sham Democracy in the capacity of the people to alter or improve their institutions. No attempt is to be made to remove present evils, because a convention elected by the people, and whose work is to be revised by the people, would be almost certain to make a bad mat tef M SI sc. The people are so restiess for change have eo little capacity to judge between good and bad projects for their fundamental laws, that it is dangerous to allew them to call a convention. This is in the true spirit of Lecomptonism, that would sJu and impose constitutions upon States by CoB ! I --ioual and Executive dictation If a convention should be assembled to revise the constitution, such is the restless spirit abroad for change that it would not be satisfied without an entire reconstruction of our organic law, which, wheopdone, its framers would vainly think was the perfection of the science of government. Hi Thl Hon. Thomas A. Hendricks, candidate for Governor, in this State, attended the Democratic Convention, in Vigo count v, on Saturday, and made a speech, which was remarkable for its conciliatory tone; he was eloquent in his appeals for union an 1 harmony in the party j he insisted that all past divieisae should be forgotten, and by-gones be permitted to sWeahSa. It is most surprising to see what strenuous advocate? tor citing ail p:ot difficulties into oblivion, these old Lecorapton leaders and Buchanan sdhSfSSJll have become since their defeat. They desire the past to be forgotten, and would be most happy to blot out a 1 share of their own history for the last two years. But will the honest anti-Le-ompton portion of the party be misled by thesc arch old deceivers ? Will they forget the abominable doctrines these men advocated only a year ago, which they have never repudiated nor repented of? It is quite possible that the farmers of the West, who are comparatively independent, may withhold enough grain from the mar ket to create a temporary rise in prices, but the moment they attempt to realize the advance by a sale, it will escape them by a sudden fall. A lew may be benefitted by holding out, but the majority will have their labor and expenses for their pains." The News. Bpj. Senator Harlan has taken to the stump, in IbwSj in earnest. Hft The wholesale clothing business of Cincinnati has nearly two thousand machines operating to keep up nbundant supplies in this market. With the raw materials the product of the needles, now mostly driven by machinery, centering in that city, exceeds in value, fifteen millions of dollars. 8r5u The Buffalo Courier avers that there has been organized in Lockport, a base-ball club, composed wholly of fat men none weighing less than three hundred being admitted. The name of the association is the "Paunchos Pilate B. B. Club." The club resolved to have a turning-table erected, on which the bases are to revolve. 56f At a public meeting held in Boston, as a tribute of respect to the Hon. Horace Mann, it was resolved to erect a monument to his memory, and a coram. ttee, headed by the venerable Josiah Quincy, was appointed to take the mattei in charge. It is stated that a fund of $20,000 had been invested in Massachusetts for the benefit of the children of the deceased. BflSu A new race course has been put Into operation near Cincinnati, called the "Cincinnati Trotting Park." The track of this Park is full a mile; it is in shape an oval having I quarter of a mile to each turn and half a mile to each of the sides. The natural advantages are very superior fbr a race course, and the few inequalities of the surface have been leveled and graded so that tbeentire track can be seen from any stand-point. On the ground are an abundance ot neverfailing springs, ami commodious stables have been erected for the accommodation of horses in training, or which are there for the purposes of trotting a race.
