At a recent Democratic Convention in Perry countv, one of the M wire pullers in accordance with the scheme ot the Lecompton leaden at Indianapolis, introduced a resolution condemning the call of a Contiintinniil Convention, which niter a warm voted dowu ; too many of j discission, was the sound, iaiiuential Democrats of the e .-, mnty were fonnd to be decided and warm admiln for a revision of the Constitution by a Convention, to pass, it. It were declared tv,at f., ivnn.-.e3 of a Convention was a matter of slight consideration in comparison iu ., n. -,c,.ff.r frcm th inincl.cious ! wiia mc.iv 1 restriction imposed by th present fundamental law that mixing constitutional reform with the ordinary subjects of Legisla tion in the Legislature would result in but partial reforms and new imperfections, and be attended with vexatious delays, which might be worse than a long endurance of the present Constitution. The defeat of (hi niupMjitJtHi as a subject of chagrin to Lta. nic.iient and independent vi'i- r v. uo too resolute for a Convention to suba-'n to any dictation upon the subject. i ho opponents of the Convention att a.pt, everywhere, to misrepresent the popular sentiment on the subject. In this county, as far as we have been able to glean the opinion of the people, there is a most decided majority for a Convention. A large unmber, if not a majority, of the influential and intelligent Democrats are advocates of it. In Spencer and Warrick coanties, not-with-'aniing 1 -sertiona of the BoonviUe MU ve are ussnred by well informed correspondents tbat the people of both parties will vote for a Convention. The following paragraphs, taken from the Rockport Democrat, expose the misrepresentations of he mvilk Democrat in regard to the poi aiar -entiment in Warrick and Spencer. We Lave the testimony of several leading Democrats in Spencer county that corroborates the statements of the Rockport paper. The people in all the counties within the ci cuit of oar correspondence have refuse'! to niake tb call of a Convention n party issu . , at the Indianapolis Junta designed to have it : Spkxcib Cocxty. A friend writing to us on private business from Spencer county, say tnere will be little or no oppposition in that county, to the calll of a Convention ; people geueraily, as they are now advised, are in favor of it. Ecansville Journal. We conversed with an inte'ligent gentleman from Spencer county last week, and he informed us that he had heard many speak of the Constitutional Convention, and not one had he heard express himself in favor of the Convention. He was decidedly opposed to it, on the principle that it was worse thon inrfcsa. It con Id accomplish no gwoU, Out there was a strung probability of its doing much harm. BoonviUe Democrat. To which the Rockport Xfc ' fpttes We have no donU out Iht he pealkan you conversed with was very hit -cnt, as he was from Spencer. Bui u i mst sjbjj, that if he did make the statement to you that you sa. he did, hi is very imek mistrken, indeed. Solar as we have been able to learn, the call lor a Constitutional Convention will meet with very little resistance in thU county. It is not the intention, here, to make that a political matter at all, because we know that Democrats, Republicans, Whigs, and Americans are going to vote for the Convention, and the citizens of Warrick, and especially those who live in BoonviUe, shall have the privilege of voting for, o- against the Convention, just its they plea"!-1. fetjT the Yvlknbote makes an unwarranted assault upon Mr. John W. Foster,--who haa recti appointed Prosecuting Attorney by the court tor his efh.-ient and determined enforcement of the liquor law, by which over thirty offenders have been convicted. The Volksbotr' hrn not the hardihood, quite yet, to declare that the law shall lie wholly disregarded in this community, but it is opposed to any effort bemg made to detect its violators. The Prosecutor must not turn his eyes to observe its daily violation, unless it be under his own nose. It is not opposed to Mr. Foster! prosecuting those violations of Uk : 1 1 rliat obtrude tl-emselvcs upon his si.' . i ml which he can't avoid seeing In Vt ot. It supports the enforcement law, hat it il tembly shocked that Mr. bould make acy inquiries into its viol ' j'. j, or complain of any offence that dooe not come under his own personal observation. To seek for information in regard to the observance of the law, is to institute, in the opinion of the Volktbote, an infamous inquisition into the private affairs of men. Iu asiuuiing the. duties of the office, the prosecutor takes an oath to enforce the law ; the law requires that he should amnion witnesses and inquire into ail cases where he has any suspicious that the law has been disregarded. The law itself, which the Fal Mksts professes to sustain so earnestly, institutes the i'lquision which so offends its conceptions of private rights. Mr. Foster has doue no more than the law made it bis duty to do, and if the Volktbote is incerely a supporter of the law, it must, by its own confession, approve the couri Mr. Foster has pursued. Se apprehend thore is a contest over this law cotniag between thWewbodeair.topre. conventions, thrust into liouorablo and responsible positions the most incapable and dishonorable mou, and we have a distinct 'memory" that there exist at present, in 4. our possession, "some musty oiu uocmruia which will clearly, positively, and inexora" bly prove that Shoemaker is utterly incouapctcul and unfit to fill any position of trust which requires, in the discharge of its duties, a respectable amonnt of intellectual capacity and political trust. Neither rould we be hostile towards him because of his Herculean labors to defeat the Know Nothings in 1P54, for the editor of the Journal opposed that tieket. "We have an indistinct memory ' concerning Air. .Shoemaker's labors to abolish Know Xothingism, and recollect that they consisted in his joining the order, advocating its doctrines, and then leaving it, after failing to secure the nomination for a county office ; and we further know that after his withdrawal from the order, he did not oppose the Know Nothings openly until subsequent to their defeat. His efforts to defeat that party were in keeping with his reputation for small trickery and hypocrisy. We are not desirous of devotir.fr much more space in our columns to show tip the faUe pretensions and unprincipled actions of a mushroom politician, who can't frame an address to the voters of bis District, and yet presumes to represent them in the Senate ; but circumstances may yet compel us to give the honorable gentleman a ventilating that will tend to cool off his feverish ambition, ioften and subdue his new-born Democratic ardor, and promote his moral welfare and political good health generally. The above remarks were written during our absence by an assistant, whose acquaintance with .I r. Shoemaker has been intimate for ten years. The musty documents in Perry county, alluded to by the Kcportcr, are the tax lists of the county. In 1351, Mr. Carl lie s property and that of Shoemaker were assessed above ioir r :l Taiues. The Board of Equalisation reduced the assessinents of both to a lair aiuouut. Subsequently, by some unexplained proceedings of the county oHicers, of which Shoemaker was one, Carlile's property was restored to the original exorbitant valuation, but Shoemaker's assessment was kept at the reduced value. For seven years t'arlile paid taxes on 5i.."U'.i ex-ess ol valuotiuti. while Mioeiimker's pMapsa iy was not taxed tin stssM hair its worth. Some years ago, the County Commissioners, ordered a pari of the unequal kal to U? paid back to Carlile, and passed au order to thut effect. Shoemaker, who was then Auditor, iu ui- zeal to erve the couuty, took an appeal t: the Circuit Court, where it was decided that though the act might be just, the Commissioners h:td not the power to make the restitution. But the point in the case is, that though the value oi balk properties was reduced at the same time and for the same reasons, Carlile s whj put back to the original assessment, under which he has paid more than Sl.noo excess ol taxes, while .Shoemaker s lias Wd rrtained at the reduced figure, paj'iiio hut halt' tntes. Mr. .Shoemaker ofticioul v intervened lo prevent the repayment ot taxes unjustly taken from a citiren, while he managed to relieve himself heiDg at the time a public officer of a good share of his own a?esment. These are the simple facts which the musty records of the county will disclose. The whole proceeding was so perfectly characteristic of the man, and in keeping with his official doings, that uo other course Ml expected of him, and the tran ction did nut disturh our social relations, which have been courteous and ostensibly friendly, for fifteen years; il served to lorn, however, a general estimate of the man's private and official character, though it scarcely came to mind, in all tbat has recently been said of his intellectual capacity. The LouiSTille Journal seems to think the Speakership of the next House lies between the Hon. Thomas Corwin, and tho Ihtn. Erfrson Etheridge of Tennessee. The Journal is not disposed to see the Republicans and Americans unite in the election of a Speaker. Of Mr. Etheridge the Journal says, that ever true to the South, he has done much to recommend himself to the true, conservative, liberal and largeminded patriots of the North. In all Congress there was not a roan, who, five years ago, fought the anti-Kansas and Nebraska bills battle more bravely and more vigorously than he, and in all Tennessee there wa? not a man who, two years ago, fought the antiLecompton battle with more spirit, eaerev ami eiieci. mm m , " We believe tbat the best men m .m mm - . , , . tirnTu 3. knows bin, cat donbt ft he sZ j? .WjBMtfctstkf iuj Uui a Mri sncce.sl.,1 lt)Crtker. in the event ot hi ohv-tinn l. il,..
