A sad ense of charity is presented to our philanlhrophio citizens this saormnp. in the person of a family sick and guff, tag without Money and clvthing' who re lodging in an outbuilding, belonging to Mr. John TlfMfct on the corner of Walnut and Water streets. The family consists of a widow, her daughter and son-iu-l.-iw, and five small children. They came to this city from Cairo, night liefore last, on the packet J. H. Done. Thcy got aboard the bwat at that place, stating that they wished to go to Louisville, and Capt. Davia kindly brought them this far on their journey, free of charge. The officers of the boat were not aware of the extreme destitution of the family, until they were found on the deck, actually satiny rate potatoes to appease their hunger. Capt. Davis immediately famished them with tood and otherwise provided for their comfort, during the trip to this place. Upon the arrival of the boat here, the family remained on board during the night, und were provided with breakt";u;t yesterday morning, after w hich they proceeded, w ith their scanty effects, to the river bank alove Walnut street, where they remained, during the greater (tortion of the day, exposed in tlj hot suu the nan and women lying upon the ground in an almost helplcsi condition, and the poor, ragged, ami famishedlooking children, grouped listlessly around them. Throughout the day they were waited by ditlerent tersons, who fit wml them food, but permitU'd them to n rii iiti at their inhospitable stopping place. Towards evening, Mr. Trihlde liem-volt nt y look charge of the brlple- creatures, and gave them shelter in the liuildiug, where they can be found this morning. The woman states that the family formerly lived in Laclede county, Missouri, where her hii.siiaiid took sick and died, after which she concluded lo return with her children to her former home iti Jefferson county, Kv. In company with her sii-in-law, she started f.r KeaOafcy, hut on their way down the MiisHppi sickness overtook them, mid they were ( .unpolled to stopforseveral weeks. The) exhausted their means, hut recovered .sufficient! , to get to Cairo, where they took pass:ige lor this city. Tbtte people are evidently unfortunate, and their di-uc-3 call lor assistance at the hands of our citirens. We hope that measured will be taken to-day to forward them to Louisville. BfttU A project fur a monument in Cleveland, Uhio, has been noticed before, wc believe, in the Journal. The City Council of that city have actually contracted for the erection of such a monument in their park, and the work has been placed III the hands of an educated artist, Mr. William Walcutt, of New York. The plan determined on is for a monument altout twenty-live fsct high, consisting of an ornamental pedestal, adorned with appropriate bas reliefs, and crowned with a statue of Perry, the statue to be eight teet and a Mflf in height. Un the tablets, beneath the statue, are to le the arms of the States of Rhode Island and Uhio. The w hole structure is to lie of Italian marble. To-morrow is Sundav. It ia a day for quiet and rest. It is alio a daj for worship. People assemble in the various churclu-3 at the ringing of the liells. Hells moreover answer admirably for this purjiose when they are rung just enough and uo more, but we have heard a few bells rung on the BaMxtll in such a mauner as to !- come a nuisance. It is hard for one in a civilized and christianized community to pronounce a church a nuisance, but churches like till other institniions, are liable to lie abused, and to abase their own privileges. In the case of George Osliorne, the young man whom we mentioned yesterday as Si uing Ucn sentenced to imprison aient for larceny, the verdict was set aside on the ground that the evidence showed that the defemUuit was only guilty of receiving stolen property, whereas, in the indictment he was charged with larceny. The prisoner was consequently discharged, and before Ji new information could be tiled against feuu, he had taken leg bail and has not been seen or heard of since. Phelan, the great billiard player of New York, had recently played several games with a Mr. Tteman of Cincinnati, in which the latter w. is victorious. Phelan, it M said, pronounces Tieuian the ttesl billiard player in the world. During the voyage of the fctarof the West, from Aipinwall to New York, several heavy robberies were effected, in all amounting to $10,000 in gold. We were Tiaitcd with a tine altowc.r of raiu early on Thursday night, which settled the dust in the street, and cooled and punlied the atmospfa m, Walker, tLe Cllibu.st. r, is anuounced as about to make another invasion of Nicaragua. the 1 1th inst , records the election of John ns Chief of the Cherokee : There is but little doubt as to the re-election of John Hobs as Principal Chief of the Cherolcee Nation, there being uo opposition. Here v.e have an instance of the love of power. Ross was elected Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, under their first 'ons-titutton in the tall of 1323, at Jfew Kchota, Georgia, and ha? been the Chief ever since, being re-eiecb-d every four years, lie was the Chief in 1838, when the whole tribe removed West, and after their settlement here, and the .Tdoption of their present ' otistitution, was chosen Chief, and so great is his popularity, that it is deemed useless by those opposed to him, to run any person ugainst him. Although he is now over sixty yeurs of age, he still clings to power with a wonderful teuacity, having exercised the office of Chief over thirty years. Mr. Ross has been a public man aruon the L'herokees all his life, and we believe he was in power as a President of the Cherokee Committee as early as 1810. He is nearly white, being the descendant of Daniel Ross, a Scotchman, who married a daughter of McDonald, a Scotchman, who married a Cherokee woman. The opinion is nlmotit universally entertained that whisky is a safe antidote to the poisor of venomous snakes, and especially ot rattlesnakes an 1 it certaiuly has a very considerable basis to rest upon, but this case seems to disprove its soundness.
