EVANSVILLE, I ND. s VTl'RPAY MOmNlNO.. AVGUSTat i Future Capital of tu I nitetl States The New York Express contains some spallations in regard to the removal of the capital of the United States at a period, perhaps, not so far in the future as some might conclude. Where and in what State will it be located ! Who can tell ? If capitals axe located according to the geographical centres of countries, as they unquestionably should be, then it seems to bo certain that Washington, being located wide of the geographical centre of the United States, cannot reasonably continue to be the seat cf the Federal Government. But in removing the capital if ever it is removed the name should go with it. There can be no substitute for Washington, a name sacred to every American heart. Although there can be but little doubt that within the next twenty years a movement will be made to change the seat of Government to some point more central than the present one, yet it will be with the keenest regret that the people of the old States shall witness its removal. It will be a difficult task to tear the Government away from a place so intimately blended with the past history of the nation. But the Great West is filling up with its millions, while the old States increase in jopulation slowly, and the Wmt will one day assert the right with wbieh superiority in numbers invests it, and then resistance to its claim will be unavailing.
There are serious obstacles in the way of removal, however, which may not be easy to overcome. First, the almost fabulous sums of money which have been expended in rendering the national capital what it is Ml day. How could the capital itself be disposed of ao as to enable the Government to realize one-fourth of the money which it cost? What mode can be suggested by which the public buildings could be disposed of at a tithe of their value, estimating that value by the amounts actually paid for their construction? Cincinnati or St. Louis, in the ordinary course of events, must soon come to be the eentrc of population, and then we may expect to see those cities vieing with each other in the strife for the posession or loca of the new capital. The great StaWs grow ing up on the Pacific shores will clamor to have the national capital 1 brought down naif way, ' and the welfare of the country may require this to be done much sooner than we we are now aware. a!? The Wellington correspondent of the Philadelphia I'r?st in recounting the trials of the Democracy in its present distracted condition says, upon distinct information, thai orders have bceeu issned to the oliut. -holders of the different State to use every name in every locality that can be used lor the puipose of injuring Judge taMBSjlaa. Whiic the Wtnocratic people see in Stephen A. Douglas the only sign by which they c:in conquer in IttGO, the Administration are re-solved, with the power still remaining in their hands, to cover the Democracy with defeat, rather than that victory should be secured by Stephen A Douglas. Hence, the largest liberty is extended to the office-holders to divide and destroy the Democratic party. They are authorized to seize upon any candidate but Douglas. If they find the name of Seymour useful for New York, then they are directed to use it if Guthrie, then Guthrie if Breckinridge then Brickenridge and in Indiana, the name of General Jo Lane is to be held up as a rallying j oint. And a new series of candidates will also be improvised, and, in or der to make confusion worse confounded, the troops of the Aministration in Illinois are 'commanded to double-set the Illinois delegation to the Charleston Convention, going, as that delegation will go, pledged to Mr. Douglas. The Michigan City Enterprise re ports a shooting affair in Laporte county, in which a Mr. W. Palmer was shot, but not fatally wounded, by his brother-in-law, .Joseph Harding. It is said that some trouble had been created between Palmer and his wife by some misconduct on bis part, and the wite talked of leaving him. Missing his gun a few days since, he went to Harding's wife s brother), to see if it was there. SJ told that it was not, he then inquired if his wife was there, and receiving a nega tive answer, he asked permission to look in the house for her, when Harding drew a pis tol and shot him twice, the first producing a severe contusion of the chest, and the other passing through nis arm above his elbow. . Harding was held to bail in 1,000 for his appearance at Court. A few days ago, two men, named Chaa. Smith and August Ehrman, were ar 1 in Louisville for having a horse in their possession which, it was supposed, had been stolen. Mr. Miller, a livery -stable keeper, of Cloverport, went to Louisville and identified the horse as one he had swapped to Ehruian for another. It appears that Smith, representing himself as a butcher in this city, hired the horse from Mr Howies, to go out into the country to boy stock. He weut to Cloverport, and got Ehrman to swap Bowles' horse for one of Miller s, receiving $20 to boot. The latter horse they took to Louisville, where they fell into the 'iand3 of the police. Ehrman was takn to Cloverjwt and Smith was brought to this city. He was committed to v - - jail on Thur day night to await an exami tion. o 1 . 5 frmpi, published at Wash i!ip(on, in Um Stale, contains a lengthy and eloquent article in Favor of building a

Private letters from Paris state that Madame Ristori is thinking of visiting the United States, for the purpose of giving a series of dramatic matinees. Rev. Win. H. Chandler, of Livcrpool, has accepted the call of the Thirteenth j Congregational Church ol Boston, as suecessor of the Rev. Mr. Coolidge. 98F Two American officers were at Solferino Maj. Kearney, who had a nominal position in the stall' ol a French General, and Lieut. Carr, who had leave to " circulate " in the Piedmontesc camp. t&" About seventy bales of the new crop of cotton had been received at New Orleans on the 11th inst., being about double the quantity received up to the same date last year. UaF" The State of South Carolina is now taking a census, and in seventeen parishes there is a decrease of over 5,000 whites since 1855, while the blacks have largely increased. At this rate, the Palmetto State will soou be Africanized. Wn&" A case of something like sun-stroke oecured at the grave yard, in New Albany, on Wednesday morning. Mr. Wesley Conner, during the funeral services of Mr. Flowers, fell to the ground and seemed to be unconscious, and was taken to his residence in a buggy. (0$rExtravagant dinners at Saratoga are at present the fashionable folly. One lady is reported to have given a dinner to twenty friends which cost S400, and a New York banker paid $750 for twenty-eight persons. A Southerner paid $1,400 lor one dinner the largest private dinner ever given in Saratoga. to;' Some boatmen have introduced a novel craft upon the Genesee river, at Kochester. It consists simply of two long water tight tin tubes, connected at each end by pieces of board, and having in the centre im elevated seat for the oarsman. This looking affair is said to pub with sorprj ease ami swiftness. JtSTThe wife of Sherman Booth, of M il waukee, recently tried there for the seduc tion of a girl of 15, has commenced an action for divorce. The parties are on good terms notwithstanding, and reside in the same house, but not in "full communion " as man and wife. Yet they walk out togl thrr, arm in arm, and excite the caricCCU of the Milwaukeeans. HjrThe London Chronicle says: We can state, on theauthority of a private letter from Iiidia, that the Maharajah of Cashmere is forwarding, as a present to her Majesty, a most costly shawl tent, which will contain moreover a bedstead of solid gold. The value of this regal offering is said to exceed 150,000. B Tho Philadelphia Press thinks the Administration is at the bottom of the publication of the Wise letter, and that the Herald had a private enmity to gratify, because Wise sent away its reporter, who came to take down his speeches in 1S55. "Occasional" writes that Bennett will shortly attack Buchanan, because the correspondents of the Htrald are not allowed the same privilege of obtaining news as heretofore. Oatf" The rowdies appear still to have free course in Baltimore. One evening last week, a party of them entered a house, knocked the proprietor down with a stone, and broke a clock. On the succeeding night a woman was knocked down by a heuvy blow, while standing in her own door, and on another a chap fired three balls of a revolver into a group of young women and children, sitting on their steps one of the balls striking the sleeve of one of the children, another passing through a sign and bow window, and the other striking the base of the house. No arrests were made. I letter in the Pontotoc (Miss.) Ex aminer intimates that one Caleb S. Manly, known as " Dr. Manly," who, a good many years ago, had a plantation on the Buttebatchie, Monroe county, Mississippi; who resided in the upper part of Aberdeen j who had a " great big bell to ring his negroes up before day ; who worked them hard, whipped them well, aud cloth ad a few of them badly ; and who was known to be the worst master in all those parts has sold his ne groes, put the proceeds in his pocket, remov ed to one of the Northwestern .States, and become a rampant abolition lecturer. EFrat-rs or Poisoned Whisky. Tlw Craw fords ville (hid.) Journal reports a case
of poisoning by whisky that ought to be as effective as a dozen temperance lectures. It says that a young man named Lewis, of that county, drank whisky on the 30th of July which burnt bis throat aud made him vomit not unusual occurrences with more Ihiuors than whisky. The next day he drank again, and in the afternoon, an hour or so after swallowing the last (lass, he wa. seized with convulsions which lasted hours, aud contorted his body and limbs terribly. At all events, it must and will be done before long; when that is done, a steam fire engine, properly located, would bo able, at all times, to reach more than half in amount of the taxable property of the city, and a great portion of the j year, without any additional improvements, could be placed anywhere. The question of recovery ol the West from the late shock iu resources has been only a question of time. It is uot possible that a land blessed with such unlimited natural resources, and a pop ulation so awake and energetic should be depressed for any great length of time. The people in tho border States of the West have made mistakes but none are now more sensible of it than themselves. They have indulged too freely in speculation, and have embarked in every legitimate adventure without measuring the extent of their available means.
