FRIDAY HnUMMi.. AUGUST U If the law against the adulteration of liquors were to be rigidly enforced, it is highly probable that every iiquor establishment in this city would be closed. The greatest difficulty in the execution of this law woold be in detecting the adulterations, and in determining wliAt stiouid be considered adulterations in opposition to what might b set up m d- tenst as necesaary ingredients in m.ii.ui.H ture. We imagine it would ! hp -1 .. I pu at riuuiouoi me iaw ceea. But suppose a smelling and tasting committee should be appointed to go round and nose out the matter, where could suitable men he found? I c jur. t, tb city, county, and court officers i j i uu upon their ufiproprta'euess B to oassrt that the cummiliee w-.jiu te maUe up trom their number . bu'i. on. taking thought of the quahfiiwu rieve&artry in such a committee of intym lint, riu-.r unfitness would I painfully n U v. lieu it M as made known thai not mm .... now in office had ever had the 'eao. exper ence in such examinations, either Ml iMlJf K ffici d.y. Imagine such a cutu:mttee of tue city officers, with the sheriff ccas abies, and a few lawyers thrown in, gai i round Mime niuruing, ipaptttiag the pur rot" liquors sold in Evansville. No one, without having ever previously tasted or idD-it of the article, would be competent to jui.ge the quality, for how on ear-h could a man who had uever in his life tasted a drop of good liquor tell that which was bad ? Upon reading this queatiou over carefully after writing it, we discover mow a wroug inference might be deduced from its construction. We must not be understood as intending to convey the idea that persons never tasted liquor because they always n?ed bad. Not at all ; we mean, of course, that they have no experimental knowledge of any kind, and tbereiore could not distinguish bad from good. How could Um ever tell one from another, who had u ued anyone kind? How could Iter Mil bad trom good unless they had previously tusted both How could they detect the presence of deleterious drugs, unless they hud experienced the effect of such adulterations, or knew the taste of pure fluids ! Besides, the smell and ta:e would make the committee sick before they had examined one block ; and we can imagine them passing a full bottle trom one to another, refusing, each in his turn, to taste a single ''suiidgun,' and taking a vote all round to resign for incapacity. Where then could a good taster or smelt-master be found? The Legislators whu male the law are no better judges of liquor Hi in the othcer who execute the uws. gad even the Governor of Indiana, ,.ui---.i. iio uiictioucd tne law, could no more ten tue dilference between good and bad liquors by hu organs of taste and smell, than a member of the Legislature, or even a Congressman. What will be done iu order to carry out the prov.. ns of the law in this particular we are unable to say. Perh.i? it would le well for the Governor to a, j n it com ui i - lasvraa to oblaiu a sample of a. - i every vendor in the ISiat i a, i. tor a year or two With ii theCiS Opon the stomach, brains, and SMWtlUHioa of a tew criminals condemned to le uuug, or perhaps a tew subjects nr.i. it be .miamed witii no more loss to Soei i ' fe xi General Assembly.
