Thk ILauvkls or Memphis Aralanchr thb Mfjnmaitwai The iu discussing the MB e, t of levees, says: The difference of level lietween high and low water at Cairo is ffty feet. The width and depth of the river from Cairo and Memphis to New Orleans, if not materially in creased, vet immense additions are made to the quantity of the wnter in the channel by large streams from both the eastern and western sides of the Mississippi. The question nalmaMy arises, what Necome of thi-va-t added volume of water? It certainly ret reaches New Orleans, and at certainty does not evaporate ; and of course it is not onfmed to the channel of the river, for it would rise tar above the entire region south of us. If a well is sunk anywhere in tbe Arkansas bottom, water is found as soon as the water-level of the Mississippi is reached. When the Mississippi goes down, the water sinks accordingly in the well. The owner of a saw-mill, some twenty miles from the Mississippi, in Arkansas, dug a well to supply the boilers of his engine, during the late flood. Whcu the waters receded, his well went dowu, till his hose would uo longer reach the water, and finally his well was dry. He dug a ditch to an adjacent lake, tu let water into hi3 well ; tbe lake was iiained, and the weM was dry again, havinz literallv drank ten acres of water in lejs thau a week. The inference ia that the whole valley of the Miaoundppi, from its bank-1 to the highlauds, on either side, rests ou a jorous sul--traium. which absorbs the redundant wgfttHL and thus prevents that degree of accumulation which would long since have swept New Orleans iuto the CktJf but for tins provision of Nature, to which alooe her .afety is attributable. In tact, if the alluvial bottGui: of the Mi&sisaippi were like the shores of the Ohio, the vast plain f rom Cairo tu New Orleans would to-day lie part aud parcel of the Gulf of Mexico, aud the whole a. ley a frcaii water arm ol the sea. Were the geological character of the valley different; the construction ot ievecs, coufmiugthe water of the Mississippi to its, channels, would cause the rise in the river to become so great at the South, that not sufficient : eTf ess could la. built. Tbe current would be stronger, aud accumulation t water treater as the levees are extended north ol US.
