This work is published in serial numbers, by Messrs. Johnson, Fry & Co, of Sew York, whose agent, Mr. Stephens, is now canvassing this city for subscribers. The author is a professor of history in one of the New York Universities, and is known as the author of a work on Egypt and the Holy Land. It will embrace the history of the country, from its discovery to the present time, will be a faithful and authentic compilation of the annals of the country. Its attractions over other histories will be its beautiful letter-press, and its very fine ngraved illustrations, of which there will 'e nearly sixty; among them will be plates t'rom the most celebrated historical paintings, and portraits of the most eminent hislurical characters. The illustrations will he woith the price of the book, and, as it is ' be delivered in parts, the purchase of it is within the means of every one who desires t. hare a good history of the country for the family library. In looking over the stock of Ladies. . lusts, in the city, we do not see anything 'irpass Hughes' stock for Ladies' Misses', mid Cbildrens'. It is a treat to wear a pair ol these inimitable Heeled Bootees,of Web-' -i. i 3 make, which is to be had at his store, Ms stock of Boys' Congress Gaiters, and M aroe Shoes is complete, he sells his stock al Gait price?, just as low as the same quality raa be sold fir in any city in the West. Do not forget the corner of Main and Second -treoLs, in your bunt for good shoes. For a few days longer, well-made I i ments suitable for fall wear, can be bought al Lyons's at a mere nominal advance on Lyons has still a large stock of elegant goods for gentlemen's wear, and as te wishes to reduce his stock before starting cast, is giving his customers good bargains Consistency and Sincerity. A man recently died in Booneville, Missouri, leaving a property of $15,000, one half of which was in six or eight negro slaves, to his four brothers and sisters in Maine, all of whom were violent members of the anti-slavery and Republican parties. After deliberating on what was to be done with the estate of the deceased brother, they concluded to have the slates sold and divide the proceed?. The slaves were sold into bondage, and a few days ago an agent arrived at Bnngor with $7,000 for them, the price of the Mgiw How difficult it is to preserve consistency where principle conflicts so powerfully with self-interest. By our telegraphic dispatches it will !e seen that Piioress failed to get the Goodwood Cup, though she made a galhnt struggle for it coming in only third. Mr. Ten Broek's. horse, Stark, it seems, succeeded in carrying off the stakes. "Gov. Hrtrris, the Democratic candidate lor Governor, is elected in Tennessee by a majority of 0,000. Ui'Y.vLTY in Canada. A private letter from an official source in England to a person in Canada, says : " I have no doubt wr shall see the Duke nf Newcastle in Canada, with the I'rince of Wales, next year. The Government have offered the Governor-Generalship to Mr. Cobden. ' Napoleon asd Newspapers. One of the the first thing the French Emperor did, on hi return to Paris, was to order the seisure of the London Sews, Express, Herald, Globe, Sun, Advertiser and Star, oil account of articles in them denouncing the late treaty of jteace. He also directed his police to have removed from the shop windows the carrieature of his late enemy, but present friend the Kmleror of Austria. e Why have we no pajier mill in Indiana '. National Democrat. Why, neighbor, there are a half do.en such mills in Indiana, at least. One of taa oldest paper mills in the West is at Brookville, which supplies the Methodist Bo. .k Concern at Cincinnati; one at Indianapolis; two at Lafayette ; one at Delphi ; one at Logansport; and one or two others whose localities we do not remember. There is, however, an opening for a good paper mill in Southern Indiana, and New .Albany is the place where it ought to 1m- located. With the Democrat, we think there would he money in the enterprise. Xew Alrani Ledger. Southern Indiana has already a good paper mill, j ust finished in Evansville, which closes the openiug in New Albany for a few years, at leaM. Copper Coin not a Lkual Tender. It has been supposed by many, that cupper coins are a let?al tender, to a certain amount ; but the idea is erroneous. A letter from the Hon. James Ross Snowdeu, Director of the U. S. Mint at Philadelphia, has been elicited by recent hgaiftll upon the subject, in which he says : The new cent is nut a legal tender for any p itied amount. Neither was the copier rent of former years a legal tender for hu v sura. Taey are ' lawful coins,' and authorised to ufim current as money, but they are not expressly made a lajpll tender in payment of debts. The Constitution of the t oiled States prohibit the States from in. thing "anything but gold and silver a kga leader in payment of debts.' This prohibition to the States do. s nut apply expressly U Congress, but the principle jierhapa does. At all events, Congress has nevei made anything but gold and silver legal nder.
