Listening attentively and (sharply with both ears, the awakened sleeper distinctly heard the stealthy movements of some dreaded intruder, who, perhaps, knowing that the head of the bouse was absent, had chosen this hour for. perpetrating some awful crime; and fearful thoughts of murder and arson quickly sned through the mind of the listener. Springing from her bed, she bounded up-stairs with almost lightning rapidity, and rushing to the room occupied by a young gentleman boarding with the family, commenced an assault upon the door which soon had the effect of bringing him forth to the rescue. After fairly getting awake and comprehending matters, our youhg friend lit a tallow candle, and without even biking time to dress himself, armed with various formidable implements of war, valiantly proceeded down stairs in the direction of the kitchen. By this time the entire house-hold ladies and domestici were in a perfect uproar from fright ; but our hero undismayed, pushed on to the hiding place of the suppose! burglar, and forcing open the door and Striking an attitude of defense, awaited the appearance of the villain. He soon emerged from beneath a table in the shape of an enormous Xortcay rttt, dragging along with him a big bone of meat. Thereupon the feminine portion of the house recovered trora their alarm, and the young gentleman all at once discovered himself in a situation actually similar to that described by Gen. Scott on a memorable oecason. He return- , ed to his room as speedily as possible, and since, like the youngster who stumped his toe, has'nt much to say upon the subject but the affair leaked out, and we give it as an item. T. S. It is well to state that a band of sercnadera were in the vicinity where all the above took place, and were at the time engaged in discoursing one of their highly origioal and affecting pieces. Hearing the uproar they took to their heels, and thus suddenly . insed their concert. a asfj A highly respectable ami wealthy citizen of this place, who is proveibial for a chronic disregard of everything like neatness in his attire, was accosted by a welldr, -;,e.! traveller at the depot the other evening, in the following style: "Come, old fellow, give us a lift on this trunk, you can't make a quart The weaHhy citizen spoiled a good item uj turning on hii heel Indignantly, instead of taking hold and earning the quarter, as Abbott Lawrence ,. paid to have dene on one occasion.
