We witnessed yesterday the operations of a ten-hone Thresher and Sejmrator, driren by a portable steam engine. The machine worked quietly, and dil it-? work well, keeping a very active man busy to supply its wide mouth with the unthreshed wheat. The straw wat carried some thirty feet by machinery, and deposited on the stack ; the golden grains of wheat, cleaned from every impurity, were delivered into half-bushel measures, keeping one man actively engaged in taking them away and emptying them into sacks. This machine and engine is from the manufactory of Messrs. Owens, Lane k Dyer, of Hamilton, Ohio, and purchased by Mr. Howard, an enterprising former of Knight Township, through the agency of Messrs. Hornbrook k Co., of this city. The machine will tbresle and dean from five to eight hundred bushels per lay, and that, too, at about one-half the old horse-power machines, and the grain ia much better cleaned. To Mr. Howard too much praise cannot le awarded for bis progress. He is really a Ywnj America farmer, keeping up with all the improvements in agriculture. His farm will show this. .Mc3sr. Little a, Krvin, millers of thi-- city, say that the wheat received from this machine U the cleanest they hare ever received in their mill. Wood or coal and water will yet relieve that noble animal, the horse, from much of his drudgery, and man w ill work more with 1 1 is brain and less with the arm, doing only that work on the farm which will give exercise sufficient for health. Cuescent City Tobacco Factoky. We refer our readers to the advertisement of the tobacco factory of A. Gumberts, who has associated with Mr. Jno. S. McOrackon, the best practical manufacturer and jude of tobacco in thfi ricinity. With the capital of Mr. Gumberts, ami the practical knowledge and skill of Mr. McCracken, Ihis establishment is becoming one of importance among the increasing f.u tories of the city. It employs 3i or 40 hands regularly, and expends over $600 weekly in raw material and wages. ItSTcputatiou and business is rapidly extcuding, and its products find ready sales along the Uhio an'1 Mississippi rivers. There are no limits to which the business may not be extended here if duly encouraged. The factory is a good pioneer for a stemmerj and sales warehouseinstitutions -which our growing tobacco receipts will soon force us to establish. PiCKPOCKBTS. The light-fingeretl gentry were at work yesterday during the perfoi tunnce at the Circus. Two persom. were relieved of their pocket-book in the short space of ten minutes after their entrance into the show. Officer Hull arrested an individual who was suspected as oue of the operators, brrt after searching him thoroughly, and not discovering anything that indicated his gnilt, permitted him logo on his way rejoicing.
