A fiat-boatman, by the name of Thomas Jarkson. from Memphis, recently an inmate ot the Marine Hospital, in this city, became intimate with a young Irish girl tiring with Mr. Kchoe, the Steward of the Hospital, who was bring ing her up for her services, and formed ;. plan to run off with her, which w.ts iiccomplisll ou Saturday afternoon last. Jackson and the eirl crossed the river in a boat, and alter .. the girl dressed herself' in Jackson , lie then re-crossed for the purpose of l" ttiiie oiuo of his cJfetts. and. while on thii si ie at the river, was seeu by Mr. Kehoe, who suapected him and watched his movement?, lie saw him cross back to the j Kentucky shore and meet the girl. Mr. K. immediately procured the services of the City Marshal, who started in pursuit of the runaways, and arrested them in Henderson. J Tltey were brought back to this place, and Jackson wa- tried yesterday, before Justice j S:iuson. on the charges of seduction and ah- j duction for purposes of prostitution. The ! prosecution was conducted by Judge Baker IM Lewis C. Stinson. Esq.. M. S. Johnson, F.-i., defending the prisoner. The trial took place in the Court House, a large numt . r of spectators being present, who manifested considerable excitement. The prisoner was held to bail in the sum of ?'io0 for his appearance at Court, in default of which he was committed to prison. The girl was . ' iit placed uuder the care of Mr. Kehoe, wlie took her back to tlie Hospital. Her MOM if Marv Docohuc. She (ft quite goodlooking, while .laekson is a rouyh, h tr-I-iMking customer. He acknowledged that he has a wife aud children living in xemphif. The girl seemed perfectly willing to remain with Jackson, and confessed that he had seduced her under the promise of marriage. New Stave Machine. We have had an oppoi I iljp of witnessing the operations of tlie Young America Stave and Ileadiug Machine, invented by Mr. Forbes, and reveiitlv introsiuced into thi3 city by Messr?. A His k Howes, who have purchased the patent right for this vicinity. The machine is remarkable for the simplicity of its constru:Von, and its rapid and efficient operation with a very small amount of power, the torce of the stroke of the knife being printiftMj given by the rly-wheel and tha .v ioht of the cutter. I uring our examination of the machine it made, at slow speed, l."o strokes, an l when well fed, cut about 100 excellent '.r tmrrel stares iu a minute. If kept up at full feed, for an hour, it would turu off 6,M4 staves. It reiuires alxut live men and three ooys to attend it, aud with all its delnvs and interruptions in Fteaming wood and preparing for work, it can easily cut iruiu Ua,fOQ to 20,000 per day, worth, heae, r.bout S8 per 1,000. Jt doe its work as well as it doe3 it -rapidly. The stave is eutial to any made by machines. The same machine, by a change in the cuter, turns out exceHf-nt heading, and hi therefore complete in itself for all the cooper wants, except his jointer. The knife that cut3 the barrel head, also cuts an excellent shingle, and as a shingle machine it is worth it. coat of $300. A large crowd of citizens saw its operations on Monday at Messrs. Heitz k llaney's mill, who were unanimous in the expression of the opinion that it was best adapted for its work of any machine in operation. It is an invention of young mechanic of genius, w ho will find the means from the prolits of this invention, we hope, of bringing out other conceptions that have lung been nestling in bis brain. The advice? by the North Britain are four days later than those furnished by the Africa, and are of a highly important character, both in a political and financial poiut of view. I A treaty of peace between Austria, I'm nee and Sardinia hail been concluded. The provisions of this treaty are briefly j as follows : An Italian Confederation U to be formed j under the honorary presidency of the Pope of Koine. Austria concedes Lombardy to i i- ranee. Napoleon, in turn, grants thoc possessions to Sardinia. Austria retains lior right to rule over Venice. The 1'aris Monikur explains the circum- ! stances attending the armistice. It says that the grttut neutral powers exchanged communications with the belligerents, of fering their mediations, but their offers were unsuccessful until the French fleet was about to commence hostilities agaiust Venice, aud a conflict before Verona w;.g imminent, whe.n Napoleon, anxious to prevent further bloodshed, ascertained the disposition of the Kineror of Austria, anA rinding him willing, an armistice wus concluded. The two Emperors had an interview on the 1 ltU inst., at Villa Franca. A dispatch from Turin says that Napoleon has issued a bulletin from Villa f'ranca, announcing the armistice, congratulating the corps ou their glorious achievements, and aunouueing his immediate departure for Paris, leaving the provisional command of the- army to Marshal Vaillattt. The Loudon Ttrnm says that England brought about the armistice: other authorities oi c the credit to Prussia. The North Briton arrived hefire the effects of the news had time to la- developed. Cyrus V. Field is a paMMgW ot. th North Briton, lie has accomplished the object of his visit. A erona dispatch says the armistice w as i concluded only after Austria had obtained 1 all she had asked. It was reported Kos tuth was to propose a provisional Government for Hungary. Vallkjio, July 11. A treaty of peace has been exchanged between the Emperor of Austria and myself on the following basis: The Italian confederacy is to be under the honorary presidency of the Pojie. The Kmperor of Austria concedes his rights in Lombardy to the Emperor of the French, who transfers them to the King of Sardinia. The Emperor of Austria preserve-; Venice, i ut she will form an integral part of the Italian Confederacy. Signed, NAPOLEO.V. The dispatch of the French Emperor announcing the couclusiun of a treittv of p.ve was bulletined in Paris on the 1 Jth. The French funds immediately rose two and a half per eentr.
