TCMDATMOKSINQ JULY li j gjj and Syracus fa SloT There arc many things a city j the State Nominating Convention. The of even the unmetropolitan size of our own, Convention is to be composed of two tklcntttds besides fire companies and street gates from each Assembly district.
-prinklers. Freedom from dust, pure air, and shade are comforts that are absolute necessities, as much as the preservation of our buildinga from fire or flood. Health is a necessity to the enjoyment of life, wherea i the possession of property is not; but even the essential blessintra of health must have means of gratification in order to possess value. Health in a prison would in general hi deemed a choice little above sickness in 1 a palace. Now, a city is a sort of prison, I the surroundine countrv beine the pure air , beyond the walls. One of the chief com. forts of city life is a park a place of public resort, where pure air and shade could be enjoyed by the imprisoned population. W ere there attached to every prison a large al.y parlor, supplied with easy chairs, vases of flowers, cages of singing birds, a foun tain of cool water, music, pictures, and win dows overlooking a pleasant prospect beyond the stone walls and the iron bound gates, nnd were the inmates of the prison allowed e7ery evening to come out of their pent up ells and sit an hour in this parlor with its miniature world of attraction, and be permitted to look out upon the setting sun from the pleasant windows, the most of them would doubtless consider the brief enjoyment of this luxury, a compensation for all the dreary hours of s''tnry confinement Jmk such a prison parlor is a pulbic park to a pent up city. The country cannot be brought to the cityt neither cbb the city be taken out into the oountry for an airing. True, there are a ravorcd few who can afford their carriages r.nd Jnvf into the country, but the majority ,nnot, and this majority ib made up of the working eBMaea, who neM the retreat;on mcst Nf. more hf Stlfial HWl is ever rvsen on ihe Ohio than summer ?uns i at EvamvilU. It is said that, beyoad question, the Citizen Guards, of Louisville, was the best military company present at the Tippecanoe celebration. During the last six years, seventeen railroad disasters have occurred in the United States, by which 400 persons met a terrible death, and over 600 others were more or less maimed. This is indeed a bloody record result from accident-to which it is geu"ally attnrnueu A bill is pending in one of our Wetern Legislatures to empower women to make contracts. A club has been recently established in Petersburg, Va.f the impossible object of which is "to make ugly men respected. The two chief offlrers are said to be the ugliest men in that State. J. T. The Louisville Journal say; that " in accepting the Locofoco nomination for the (Governorship of Vermont, he has done a more comical thing than he ever said. Aristocratic Stables. A reporter of the New York Herald ha3 been devoting
himself lately to the stables of "Uppeitendom in the Fifth avenue, and about that neighborhood. He says: Some of the private stables aud coach bouses in New York are curiosities worthy Of notice. Not half the poor people iu the city are as well fed and cared for as the r . , . , . , -c-cx. I horses ot our rich nabobs. On the rifth avenue, and adjacent streets, are Ftables , btriltof brickand freestone, with miich architectural display, lighted with gas and supplied with Croton water, with large and roomy stalls, and in some rases, the lofts i overhead are occupied as sleeping rooms tor the tamilv servants. A reoorter recent! visited and inspected several of these stables. In one, owned by a wealthy banker, lately a foreign minister, he found about half a , ,bv,, onions ind a.Lll. hnra a I r"i"" wv.. , beautiful Shetland pony, and a cow, besides the groom and coachman, half a dozen dogs, and some Guinea pigs. Two men were fined $100 each in Louisville on Wednesday, for betting upon an elcctiot.. The law in regard to betting is rarely enforced, either in this State or Kentucky.
