E V ANSVILLE, II SATURDAY MORN' I NO JULY Tit Age of Lager Bear. " Dos'tthtnkbfttaaMOoMartTirtuoiM, there shal1 las no more cakes and ale ? " Shakspeare puts the above in tbe month of Falstaff, a character, we admit, not in himself a paragon of virtue, bat then he was something of a philosopher for all that ; and according to hia views of regime and moral philosopy, virtue and ale or beer somewhat intensified are not incompatible. We have every reason to believe that if the great delineator of hnmanit y, Shakespeare, who undestood so well the past and present, conld have been allowed to look into the future through the mutations of aom two hundred years, he would have smiled complacently on the Lager Beer saloons of tbe present day. We live on the beeb of ages that have run off before us like frightened deer. What we mean by ages, now, is the duration of prevalent customs. A modern age is not near so long as the ancient ones. Our lives are not as old as Mathuaalah: our glare and lumber houses are not as durable R3 the Pyramids, and onr ages are not as long as tbe historic customs of antiquity. Modern history is composed of patent right periods, warranted to do a great deal in a short time, and each generation now brings forth its peculiar ages. As the school-boy has his distinct ages; as the age of KMaa the age of marbles, the age of hoops, and the age of toot horns, so the children of a larger growth have their ages of revolving customs. We live in an age of Lager Beer. True, we live many ages in one, but lager beer " Is one of em." Tbe age of King Whisky and his court princes, Rum, Ginf and Brandy are passing away, and in his stead comes Queen Lager Beer, attended by her gentle maids,Native Wine, Soda Water, :nd Lemonade. The reign of the Queen of the frothy mug has not yet reached its meridian, but the battle tx'tween the two dynasties is being fought in every town and city in the United States, and wc hope the retreating King as he lias lived will in reality die-nasty. The forces of Queen Lager are increasing magically in city and village. Alcohol, so long vi. torious, wavers in the fight, while Heer, gathering strength as it work, leaps on with prodigious ' "js, foaming and flashing in the Hushed excitement of conscious triumph. J Kriudy has been branded as a counterfeit, a hypocritical cheat, and a drug. Whisky is growing weaker and weaker every day, and betaking himself in his vessels to the water. Ron ifl given to the cooks aud barbers, toh used only in jel.ic. omelets, and hair oil, while O in, a hich was wont to crow lustily in cork-tails, is taken only as a suspiviouf medicine under the name of SchnnpitH; and the Republic of Beer will soou Ik: pcroianentl v established. . r It b not difficult to ssc that the milder ba-verap.es miijt ultimately triumph ovci tin ir more fiery antagonists. They are l-.il . i rawing more and more in favor with iatbibers, while whisky and brandy, robted of their ancient virtue by the viltianotts adulterations to which they are subjected by no si nipulous manufacturers, arc fait losing their hold on the affections of the people. " That s an awful loto whisky drunk yet, it is true, but not near as much us there was few ysatl ago. It is leooiaini as unfit -h-loiiable a: the luodt of it is unhealthy, and id dropping to the lower ranks of drinkers, nhl drinkers, whose habits are formed, aud who experience as UUCb difficulty in accommodating themselves to new ones as the old lawyers do in getting used to tin practice under the revised code of Indiana, still adhere to their Gery friends in spite of their degeuerary ; but young sippers, whose practice at the bar dates since tbe revival oflcv- ( i n c- in the introduction ol lugei beer and i'lttawba, evince :t preference for these nrticlet, which will ultimately establish them in tbe Toiled States as national drinks. In every city breweries are being multiplied to satisfy the increasing demand tin l eer, while the clustering vineyards that annually widen over the undulatihg landscape of Missouri, Indiana, and Ohio, attest our preference for homemade wines ami our lepudiation of foreign drinks. Tbe claims of lager beer are powerfnlly supported by the laws of health, economy and u-lnon. It is not only allowed harmless, hut recommended as :i lieneficial hy genie aid, and grateful tonic to invalids. Its cheapness recommends it to the poorer classes, while the oceuus of it swallowed in first class saloons by respectable men, a id the quantities drank in hotels at dinner, prove that it is far from unfashionable to quench the thirst and sharpen the appetite with homely lager. Indeed, the yonng Americans appear to be Letter customers to beer houses than tbe liertnans themselves; the former toss off glass after glass or the roaming liquid in the nervous and Kourth-of-July style of Doeslicks at Niagara Fairs, while a phlegmatic iMitchtuan will sit downjto bis round table and -lowly drown a multitude of troubles .u a single mug. The amount of lager beer consumed in this city is immense, as is indicated by our numerous breweries, the large shipments abroad by nearly every steamer, and tbe numb r of beer wagons that daily rattle

' 1 " 1 - African Farmers 9000 years Ago. Prof. Flctherof the college at Green cast is. has been translating some of the ancient classic writers on Agriculture, for the lament of the farmers of Putnam county. From some extracts we learn that one of the kings of Carthage, in the northern p-irt of Africa, considered agriculture of so much importance, that he devoted his chief attention to it, and wrote over twenty liookson farmifig. Those works show that the Africans at that day were far in advance of any of the nations inhabiting that country at present . Their territory is described as being coverel with gardens and large plantations, intersected every where by caaals, by which they were watered. The whole country was studded w itli landed estates, adorned with elegant buildings, that betrayed the opulence of the owner'. The lands were planted with vines, palms, and other fruits, while extensive pas tures were'frfled with flock and herds, and beautiful brood mare?. In short, the hole prospect displayed the wealth of the inhabitant" ; the highest ranks of the Carlhageniaas were farmers, ami vied with eaeh other in pomp and liixnry. Tlw kinir we UV Tai ' H MfUV - . rt have spoken of, alludes with much deprecation to the fashionable farmer, or those w ho tries! to le both farmers aud city fitlks ; from which we infer that human proclivities and vanities were just about the sntne two thousand and five hundred years ngo, that they are now, for we have many such at the present day, who are neither bat nor bird ; neither living In tewn or country, but trying to play the lord in both. Theae tbe King advises in the following style : "who should buy a farm, let htm sell his city resilience that he may no longer be encumbered with his town house, but give himself up entirely to that upon his land. He to whom an aliode hi the city lies dose at heart, has no need of a country estate. It isalso stated, what may he new to our futile raiser j, that tbe breeding and raisioi l mules, for liotu being ConaidcicU it j t . I ' :n Afrc-a. was .is common nlraoft n: tbr l -n Kawas liorswi.
