Tho examination of our public schools now in progress is the most brilliant rcr had; and it excites unirersal admiration among the visitors After soch displays of their advantages, there ran be no dissenting voicea on the subject of the value and importance of the excellent system of public Instruction we have secured for the children of Eransviilc We can, with pride and with safety, wc believe, challenge a '-om-parison with the school of Cincinonti or Boston, which are pronounced the bct in the country. Happily for us, oar old charter has tared U3 from the leveling system decreed by our new constitution, as construed by our Supreme Court. Yc;terday morning, Mis BoftiW intermediate school for girls, and Misj Hooker b school of the same grade for boys, undeiwent a most thorough examination by their teachers, Mr. Knight", Superintendent, and by the Trustees, in the presence of a larfie company of visitors. The studies in the&e schools embrace reading, spelling, geography, arithmetic, and grammar ; the scholars range from seven to twelve years of age. A visitor writes us a note saying, 'mo-f rwbly did each class acquit itself. " The perfect accent, the distinct pronunciation, the ready response, and the rapid solution or mental problems, most clearly evinced the careful and emceut training of the classes. As they ascend from grade to grade, the advantages or their early and thorough primary lessons will become more :ind more manifest. The teachers need no higher testimony of their ability and fidelity than these examinations afford. While they arc conferring such invaluable beneiit upon the city, the? are acquiring honored name for themselves. The office of a faithful teacher is a recpon..ib!e and sacred irii-r and though it may afford joor returns .n worldly goods, it will, where duly appreciated, be rewarded with the loveand esteem of the warm, pure heart , and the bright and noble intellects it quickens into iife. The esteem in which good teachers are held is one of the sorest evidences of the civilization and progress of a community. By cur schools and our Machos Wt are. in this respect, willing to be judged. A SURPRISING INVENTION.— We well remember the excitement that was created some years since, by Mr. Paine, of Worces-
ter, who announced that he had discovered the means of producing a light from water. We arc not now, however, called upon to chronicle a water light, but an air light.— And this time we have not to chronicle a mere report of one, but there it is, at 46 Hanover street, in the shoe and leather exchange, exhibited freely and fairly to the scrutinizing examination of sceptical [sic] minds —a veritable reality—an accomplished fact —an achievement in scientific discovery that the age will be proud of—and effected by a contrivance of mechanical skill as wonderfully simple aa it is astonishingly successful. The apparatus is a small affair, occupying about as much room as a lady's work table, and will perform its duty in a room moderately warm, without any attention being paid it. It is a sort of perpetual motion for about ten days, when it has to be wound up again. It takes in atmospheric air much in the way that a pair of forge bellows do. By pressure, this air is decomposed as it combines with hydro-carbon, and is then forced along ordinary gas pipes to any part of the house, when it is lighted just in the same way as gas is—and a brilliant light it is. In addition to this there is an oxygen light provided for summer use— a pure blue light unmixed with carbon, and of such intensity that iron is readily melted over it. What is still more important, all this light and heat can be kept up at a very trifling cost. The apparatus, in point of price, is we understand, intended to be put low enough to be within the means of every house-keeper. We hail it with a hearty welcome.—<Boston Paper>. ———<>——— faiT An American, wiitiu tioin Tunti. says : Vou liud here, too, the North-Italian face aud air, which so nntrked'y distinguishes the people north of the Po :roni the .
