jpCiTThcnuiuUT ,.f licenses granted in this county !- .4 id jeetfor the consideration of itcitizens, aside from the moral influences ot the measure. All of the license taxes go tuto the aotmnon School Fund of the State, in which all the counties Lhare according to their populaiion. Many of the countie have refused to grant any licence, ami will, . consequently, contribute nothing to the common School Fund from this Sonne of revenue. Others have but two or three aj -plication-, and most of them have restri. led the number to eight or ten. It is BBteRkBokJ that the average number, for each county, will be less than eight or rtid in the entir. State. This number, at $60 pe r license, w'.il give a revenue to the School Fund of a I out $40,000 per annum. In the small county of Vanderburgh, thi Commissioners hare already granted ninety two licenses, and the number w ill probably be increased to one hnndred, on which there will be paid into the State Tiv.iurv fui the use of the State School Fund the sum .,t $5,000. This sum is equal to one-tiithth of the estimated revenue from license.- i" it - whole State. 1 he licenses lor anderbnrph county are, with five or six exception", to citizens of Evooaville. Almost the entire sum of 000 contributed to the State School Fund is to be paid, therefore, by the citizens of this city. Ip the general distribution of the State Fund, it k) estimated that about S"oO of it will come back to this city and county. Vanderburgh will have paid into the State Treasury on licenses $JV,000, and she will receive back as her share $"00, leaving a balance of $4,500, which will be drawn principally from Evansville, by the action of the Hoard of I'onuin - iOROTS, for the npport of the schools in other counties of the State. This sum is equal to half the cost of supporting the admirable school system of thecity. These license houses arc ?itppot ted, in a great measure, by the laboring men of the city, and their industry is to be tnwi! fr the schooling of children in other cum ties, to an amount equal to thai levied by the city for the support of our schools. Under former laws, this county pays into the State School Fund about $3,131 more than is returned to l.er; under the operations of this license act, this difference between her payments and receipts w ill be increased to $7,oo0 or S7,roo, or. in other words, the county will pay into the Treasury i:t,noo and get back about fy'.OO. No argumont can show so conclusively a3 a simple statement of facts the unjurl operations of our laws, and the impolicy and inequity of the Constitution, which declares the School system shall le uniform throughout the State, regardless of the uneipial contributions and varied wants of the different lection. We commend the sul- ! ject to the MTiOM con-ideration of the citie.is of the county, and especially of the the city, from whose labor these taxes ON omunj - -- Fillilitistcrlng I tli lo..r Intitans.
