TUXSDAT MOBNINQ.... RS-UrKMN'i THE Sf.AVE TllADE Tirol of the slave trade with Africa would soon reduce the existing slave property of the South to onettMrd its present cash vol- j tie: and any considerable additions to the i uuumviuuiv. I BPHcrn area ami prooucu or cuuuu, tu6. , rice, and tobaooo, woukl very soon reduce the price of those articles, to the disadvantage of the-pregenTpTtxIttcer. Increase, from new acquisitions of cotton lands, the annuel product of Southern cotton, for example, from three million five hundred thousand bales to ten millions of bales within the next ten years, and the result would be that the money which is now required to purchase one bale would purchase two or three. Limit the cotton area of the South to its present boundaries on one hand, and maintain the present prohibitions against the African slave trade, and while the producers of slaves in Maryland, Virginia and other slave holding States will hold the command of the more Southern markets for slave labor, our existing cotton planters will continue to hold the monopoly of the cotton culture. Thus we find the Virginia slaveholders opposed to the revival of the African slave trade, because it would soon render their slave property comparatively worthless; and thus we find Senator Hammond, of South Carolina, opposing the policy of acquiring Mexico and Central America, and distrustful even of the policy of annexing Cuba, because the results would be such reinforcements of Southern slaves, and such competition in the cotton culture, as would diminish the value of South Carolina slaves, lands, and their products. These views are entertained by the bulk of the great slaveholders and planters of the South, both in regard to'the supply of negroes and the demand for cotton. ———<>——— Evansville Property. There has never been so healthy and steady a demand for town lots in this city at at present; and within six months past many hundred lots have been bought for improvement, and some few on speculation. The demand for building lots is steady and increasing. The erection of dwelling houses did not stop at all during the mild winter, and has gone steadily on during the last three or four years of severe pecuniary pressure; and yet there is more difficulty in getting a dwelling of any character now, than at any previous time in the history of the town. The demand for bricks and lumber, for some months, has been greater than the supply, and is still growing. We have had more new manufacturing establishments and new business houses opened in the past six months, than in the same period at any other time; and, what is still better, they all seem to prosper. The population of the city never increased so fast as at present, and this is a time of trial and depression to many other towns and cities in the Northwest. We only need one good crop and the returns which it will bring, and a restoration of ordinary commercial prosperity, to give this city an impetus in growth, such as no Indiana town has ever yet had. It has been found that our manufacturies can compete successfully with those of any other place, in a long 1ist of articles now manufactured here; and that there is an immense scope of country which can be better and more cheeply [sic] accommodated with both foreign merchandize and domestic manufactures at Evansville, than at any other point. Our taxes have been rather high for two or three years, but we are fast out-growing that objection, as there is no engagement or liability thus far entered into, by the city, which will in the future require more than a moderate taxation. Our town lots are rated lower than in any other place of the same size and prosperity in the country. The best corner lots for business change hands at less than $175 per foot front, whilst not the best inside property at Indianapolis has lately brought $400 per foot.— We sell more merchandize, at wholesale, by two or three fold, and do more manufacturing than any city of the State; and yet our rents are much lower in proportion, than of any other city. Our business men are very generally not only solvent, but very strong, and there is more general prosperity in Evansville now than at any former time. ———<>——— Democbatic Statk Convkstion. Thc Petersburg <Reporter> has the following notice: We understand that the managers of the canal will let the water off in a few days, for the purpose of repairing the banks and putting it in order in time for the coming harvest. To enable the managers to speedily repair the canal as soon as the water is drawn off, it is desirous that they receive the percentage ordered to be assessed on the canal fund subscribed, before they undertake the work, and we have been requested to state that the managers would be pleased to have those who have subscribed to call and pay the amount of their percentage. We learn that the water will not be let off till July 10th. ———<>——— MlSMTtECTKD BENEVOLENT. From the reports of the religious and benevolent societies that celebrated their anniversaries in New York during the present month, it apptMVd that the contributions tor nil the misjionary and distant charitable enterprises amounted to twenty-five millions of dollars, (m which the New York llrrald observes that people arc tiegi lining to get a little tired of this tax, aud do not wisk to be inund:ited with tracts and lecturers, which never do a particle of good, ostensibly to c hrist ianie the inhabitants of the Pacific Island-, and Airicans to . .ty iiolliing Of the Jews while the white heathen among ns commit the most frightful crimes, and live iu deplorable ignorance, perfectly ignored by those home societies for foreign barbarism. A trial that has produced a good deal of excitement iu thc parish of Jefferson, La., was termiuated last week, in a manner .-at-isfactory to public opinion in the parish. A young and quite a pretty brunette girl was found some months ago in a slave yard iu New Orleans, who alleged that she was white and free, and had been kidnapped from her home in Arkansas. She was immediately taken from the po Mental of the slave dca.h r and placed under the protection of the courts. On the trial of the ca-c, last week, tne jury very promptly rendered a verdict in her favor, after hearing the evidence. The - lave dealer had purchased her upon a private bill of sale, without any investigation of the title of the vender. BgThe merchants aud business men of New Orleans, on the 2'2d inst gave a farcwe'll diuuer to Mr. James Robb, thc well J known banker, who has been prominently connected with the business of thc city for ; the last twenty years. She is expected to be ready for her first voyage to Portland by the first of August: The great shaft, weighing upwards of thirty tons, was some time since placed on board. Since that time the fitting of the machinery has progressed rapidly, and one of the masts has been set up. There will be six masts to the ship—three of iron, and three of wood. Those in the neighborhood of the funnels will be of iron, the foremasts of wood. The necessity of having iron masts will be readily understood when it is remembered that the furnaces, burning some 250 tons of coal per day, will send enormous heat through the monster funnels. The shrouds and stays will be secured to ! iron rings, so constructed as readily to open
when required, but on other occasions holding with a firmness which defies any amount of strain which might be brought to bear upon them. The main and topmast yards of the square rigged mast will be of iron, and the length of the main yard, 120 feet, or very nearly forty feet longer, and several times as strong as the main yard of the largest line-of-battle-ship afloat. ———<>—— ——> The Hon John A.
