EVAHSV1LLE, IND. M N DA V HORSlMi. .MAY M JT - - - S9 The Southern Pacific Railroad, through Texas, hat, we are led to think, gotten, at last, its quietus. The recent attempts tosettle its al!airs,by compromises nnd new contributions from stockholders, have ended in an explosion that ruins the enterprise, and stops all further proceedings under the present management. The bonafidc stockholders hare been convinced, on investigation, that the late plans for the pretended restoration of the affairs of the company, were oolj an artful scheme to swindle them out of more money. The sums which the stockholders had contributed and placed, tortuuately, in the hands of agents of their own selection, to redeem the road and relieve the company from its difficulties, have been ordered to be restored to those who paid them, and the road is left to its fate. All confidence in Dr. Fowlkes, and others, who have been boasting of their ability if by the stockholders to rescue the from its embarrassments, is declared to have been forfeited. A suit is now pending in Texas to forfeit the charter. The Governor refuses to recognize the company, or, rather, he refuses to execute the acts of the legislature regarding land grants. The State will probably save its extensive grants of land, and this company, which has been a disgrace to the State and country, will be wiped out of existence. The lands proposed to be given to the road being about 20,000 acres per mile would have been sufficient, under good management, to have built and equipped the road without any contributions from stockholders. These lands are still subject to appropriation and one half the quantity granted to a responsible and honest company will secure the completion of the road. The wants of the country through which its line passes in Texas, will not allow the enterprise to be entirely abandoned, and the country may expect to see it soon revived tinder better auspices. Individuals will be heavy sufferers by the swindle, but the country will gain by the failure of the old company. The Charleston, S. C. Savings Institution received in the last four months, upwards of $400,000 on deposit, the principal portion of it, being the deposits of laboring men. These institutions are very numerous and useful in all the Eastern cities, and is a matter of surprise that there are not more of them in the West. If the industrious men and women had a pbu e where they could lay up every surplus ti ft y eenfs or dollar More temptation robs them of it, habits of economy and thrift would be induced, which would be the fouutbttion of a vast deal of prosperity and happiness in niter life, among those who live by their labor. If one half the money spent in 1 1 1 i - city for whisky could be gathered into savings bank, it would soon form an institution that would eontributo mm h to the prosperity of the city. It would give an impetus to business and aid in the formation of an independent aud thrifty class of working men. The savings banks of Massachusetts have, we believe, now on loan, more than $24,000,0(10, and they form nn important element in the prosperity of the State. An association of citizens who could cemmand the entire confidence of nil classes, could in no way confer a greater benefit on the community, than by uniting for the establishment of a savings tank, which would take the management of the RB niheant sums that would be debited l y children and laboring meu and women. The beginning would probably be small and the growth of the institution would at first be slow. But in time it would hs found here as everywhere else, an important and valuable public institution. The Democracy or Ohio. The. Democrats of Ohio held their State Convention, for the nomination ot' State officers, at Coltiiiilui-. on Thursday. The two anti-Leroinpton Adiuiiiistration factions are as much cmf tittered towards each other n.- ever. Mr. Payne waa th favorite canilklnte tor (Jovvruor of the Dough's men, ami Mr. Charles Flood was to be supportad by the lAefMSi of Mr. Buchanan. There were several other sspiraDtg for (tuberuatorial honors, ami it was expected Uiat Judge Unnney wonhl be selected as a compromise camlnlate. If the parties could agree upon a union ticket, it was said there would he no ditliculty in lining together on a eoinmoii plullomi. To see ure the offices was n matter of more importance to the caucus than the platform of professed principles, umlvr which they are to be canvassed for t adore the jeople. The Hon. Humphrey M ir. ?.al l.a declined the nomination of the opposition caudidate for Congress in the Layuisville District of Kentucky. The only reason he otters for his declension is a " desire to leave the agitation of public qtiestions to others in wboae hand? they will be better directed than his. ' Hid withdrawal will create a (food deal of surprise and have a discouraging effect upon the prospects of the opw- - if ion party of the State. (Norths, except two, have been driven out ef Texas. The emigrants who arrived in New York last week, brought with them nearly 1 $16rt,000 in specie. Gkvkral Suakiku. About tiie middle of last month there were earthquakes in Oregon, California, and Peru within a few days of each other. We learn from the Indianapolis Journal that the Penitentiary Commissioners have decided on Lafayette as the location of tho new prison. It is alleged that the secret of Hum phrey Marshall's withdrawal is an unconquerable repugnance to the Slave-Cade platform on which his friends tried to place him. A lady in South Boston, a night or two ago, hearing a burglar down stairs, took her station at the head of the staircase, revolver in hand, and wailed till the fellow appeared, and tired. The shot struck near him, whereupon he made an ignominious retreat. The papers praise the lady 's pluck. She was alone in the house. tfajf The Democratic convention of Ohio, on Thursday nominated Judge Ranney, ef Cuyahoga, as eandidate tor (Joveruor, and W'm. Sutfurd of Koss county, for Lieut. Governor. The proceedings were harmonious, and the candidate for governor was nominated by acclamation on the first announcement of his name. A new song is traveling the rounds of the Democratic papers,in imitation somowhat, of ' God save the Queen." It reads, " God save our President." An exchange allows that such a saving would be a large economy, and that it is lucky that God can save him. A little earnest praying by the party would be better than all the singing they can do. Ilnrgous k Brothers, formerly emi nent bankers in Mexico, and the first grantees of the the Teh uan tepee Route from the Mexican Government, were compelled to suspend payment in New York last week, in consequence of the heavy advances the . had made to open the Teltuantcpec Road.Their liabilities are reported to be over $3,000,000. ———<>——— ——>In Monroe, Indiana, last week, the husband of a lady discovered in his wife's bureau drawers correspondence that had been carried on with young man. Whereupon he was about to chastise her, but her lover hearing of it, interfered, when there was a row and a lawsuit. Two of the parties are bound over to court tor assault, and the beau has escaped to Pike's Peak, and the lady has returned to her husband. ———<>——— Jacob Little.- The e,reiit UeMr stock jl.i r ol Wall ,-tti i t has aj'ain failed and for the tenth or twelfth time. Francis Joseph, who iu the tir-U instance subdued Karon Hess for his cautious plan of the campaign, which wu to remain around FerMSe. and to a ept the battle tindar the cannonof the fortress, has now lost his confidence in the more daring plan of Gulai, and will in a few days set out with Baron Hess to supercede (Jyulai in the command. The continuous rain and retrogade movementhave coiieiilcrahly damped the ardor of the young Austrian officers, who thought tln v might within a few days destroy the Sardinian army and occupy and plunder Turin. The halo which surrounded Hadetsk was artificial from the lirst, and especially manufactured by German papers. Napoleon is hailed by his soldiers with eitliusiasm, and by the Italians with complete madness. If he succeeds in his campaign and makes a generous use of victory iu favor of Italian independence, he secures the throne of his dynasty. ———<>——— A FATAL DUEL.—A New Orleans correspondent of the St. Louis <Republican> gives an account of a fatal duel fought last week, near Mobile: The parties to the affair were H. J. Vick and James Stith, young men of wealthy and respectable families in Vicksburg, and the latter is a cousin of the present Mayor of New Orleans. A misunderstanding or dislike had, it is said, existed between them for some time, and on meeting one evening at the St. Charles billiard room, in this city, a mutual friend, unaware of their acquaintance, offered to introduce them, when Stith whispered his dissent. Vick overheard him and demanded why he refused the introduction. "Because I do not consider you a gentleman, sir," was the reply, to which Vick responded, "You are a liar!" whereupon Stith struck him, and Vick drew a pistol, but was prevented by the bystanders from using it. He then sent Stith a challenge, and they proceeded to Mobile and fought on the Bascom Race Course with rifles, at forty paces. One round did the business. Vick's gun was discharged at the word "fire," and a second after the word "one" Stith fired, sending his ball through his antagonist's head, just below the cheek bone. The unfortunate young man fell, and was apparently dead before his seconds reached him. Mr. Vick was about to marry a young lady of Vicksburg and had come to this city to make preparations for that event.— He had purchased almost $2,000 worth of wedding paraphernalia for his intended bride, and was to return at once to Vicksburg, when this fatal quarrel intervened and cut short his happiness and life together.
