The party was .It ciuVdly the most agreeable .eocinl gathering of tSe peason, anil we nre glad to arntMinre that it was eminently RMNtoM tor the object for which it whs gotten ii. The receipts exceeded $150, and would have been double hail not the hdte? Iecn toocontioualy scrupulous in their prio r . At a similar party for a like ohject in another city a week ago, !0 cent.-- was c.u ted from us fur what our ladies wouM accept only a dim. That might have been tin vn!ue of the fruit, but the smiles and graces that accompanied its delivery were worth Ibw times the sum, ami ought lo have tVen charged for as a contribution to the tameli iary fund. Things of such priceless value ought not to be throw n away on sin h occasions. "he Lafayette Journal published re cently a nomtter of articles exrt'?ing the 'intensified meanness"' of a late citizen Gf that city, who the .fonrnttl says, has removed to Evansville. These articles have leeii widely copied, ami elicited comments that reflect no credit on the place that shall receive and tolerate the subject of them, without investigating the truth of the allegations. LiurtARY Lkcti res. Our citizens will lie pleaaeil to learn that the Lecture Com mil tee of the Library Association arc eudeavoring to secure the services of Ir. Uainl. the celebrated Kuropcau traveler, lecturer, aud .'diol.ir, for a few itciuics on the state of Kurope, which .will include personal reminimmicM of Louis Mnpoleoii, the Emperor of Austria, and the King of Sardinia, the! condition of the nations engaged in thepres- ; ent war, ami a general view of the continent. At this particular time, no let lures could Ih more attractive or more eagerly listened a If m arrangement can be eifected, we shall have one or two lectures of the course next week. They will Ih? looked for with much interest by our jieoplc. We arc retpieite.l by the ladies of thoOld Presbyterian congregation to return Mr. C. Decker their thanks for the use of one of his pianos, kindly furnished for the us of the strawberry ?npcr and concert on Wednesday evening. W'e a!s, take the liberty of calling the attention .i our readers to the fact that the piano is one ,,. our own Evansville manufacture, made by Mr. I ea ker, ami we are ?nre that all who wi re .resent at the nipper on Thur ilaj night w ill agree with us that it of rich tone and of high polrsb, and relb real credit on our domestic skill and enterprise. iir friend ZmcV. Tavlor has fnrtiishetl us with New Orleans papers, from which we learn that business is extremely dull there, aud that the city is thinning out very perceptibly, thongh the weather is not very hot aa yet. Kery lo;it, every train and steamship, is carrying away its full freight of passengers, and thongh some arrive from day m day, it i- not in such numbers as hitherto. Mo t ot tlie daces of public aiuu-Mment are aUiut cla ing f.r the seasoxi, aud tor the next three tirleans will be a tl nil town. mouths New The General Assembly ot the Cum berland Presbyterian Church, which has lieen in session in our citv for over a week, is drawing to a cloM and the Commissioners are begi tin in tt. take their dfynrhme. Many of these gentlemen resitle in far tlistant parts of the I'nion anil carry w ith them to their homes the impression received w hile here, in regard to Kvansvilb, its inhabitants, and its lutnre mjaammnj, It may not be over-estimatino the Uoosier Crescent City in a spirit of self-prai?c, to anticipate that these impressions will lie quite favorable ami creditable. The following product of a painful effort is given to the world, by particular request. At last accounts, the author w:is suffering from a brain fever the effect of overtasking the feeble organ: if the little Jig Dancer of Kinney k Co. -Juvenile Troupe should attempt to" play his Tiolin and dance with a young lady at the .,ame time, why would he be like the Chamman racket ana nor rrentlemnnlv oiKcere'. PIKE'S PEAK EMIGRANTS.—The returning Pike's Peakers, as they come in communicate deplorable accounts of the destitution, suffering, and cruel disappointments the deluded emigrants had endured. The spring
tide of emigrants were nearly all on their way back. Hundreds had sustained them- selves on their return journey on the carion [sic] of the dead horses and mules scattered along the road, until they reached Fort Kearney where they were arriving in a state of utter destitution and starvation. An exchange says: The officers at the Fort were doing all they could to relieve the distress of the adventurers, but their supplies were wholly inadequate. The tides of emigration were about the first of May meeting at Fort Kearney, and as far as the eye could reach, the encampments extended, looked as if a great portion of the population of the United States had concentrated there for the purpose of holding a mammoth camp-meeting. The indignation of the emigrants against the letter writers from the undiscovered mines, and the newspapers of the border towns which have published fictions of the gold region, was excessive, and their condition of mind was such as to make them exceedingly dangerous. The emigration has been almost countless. No published estimate is high enough. It was not unusual to see camps of hundreds of wagons. There were often a thousand animals grazing about a single emcampment. As far as the eye could reach, the plains were alive with strings of cattle and wagons, huge caravans plodding on, stretching over the trampled grass and sand of the Platte Valley, continuously. No emigrants were passing Fort Kearney who did not propose to press forward to California. At that point those who were going on to the Pacific coast, and those who were turning back, were separating, and there were great times in trading cattle and wagons, sorting provisions and dividing assets of disorganized companies. The Pike's Peakers crowd upon the ferry-boats at the points of crossing the Missouri, and the owners of the ferries are glad to pass them free in order to get rid of them. The steamboatmen on the Missouri are behaving generously toward the indigent emigrants. One captain of a boat called to them: "Pile on boys," and gave six hundred of the way worn fellows a free ride. There are hundreds of incidents of suffering of the most painful description. ----- tin ). II. 8i pbeR .. LOUIS, May 27—P M The mails from the West bring accounts of an affray at Marysville Ferry, on the Big Blue river, in Kansas. A party of returning Pike's Peak emigrants attempted to seize the boat and cross without paying charges. H. D. Williams of Mo., Peter Valliton of St. Joseph, and a Mr. Thompson, who were in the employ of the Ferry Company fired upon the emigrants and killed C. C. Stanley of Kanawha, Va., and William Murray of Hardin county, Iowa, and dangerously wounded J. S. Barnum of the latter place. Williams, who fired the fatal shot, fled with his, party to escape summary punishment from a crowd of emigrants who soon arrived at the scene of affray. Two young men from the plains report that they were asked to sign a paper to which 300 names of returning emigrants were affixed, pledging themselves to destroy St. Joseph. The Gazette professes to fear no violence, and says those who have already arrived have conducted themselves peaceably. ---<>--- BURLINGTON, N.
