They had to haul the dirt twenty rods to wash it. The completion of the ditches was expected to make all the claims along the creek pay largely. Supplies were beginning to arrive, and there was less apprehension of suffering from famine than previously. Of the returning emigration an intelligent gentleman writes as follows: "It is true there has been a large emigration here within the last month, and also true, nearly all have gone back to the States. Their reports cannot he relied on from this fact, if no other. A large mamority of the emigrants were men who lacked energy and industry, with no means—almost starving—finding no provisions in the country and seeing no gold lying upon the way who would listen to them or their tales."
