FRIDAY MORNING...............MAY 20 ===== Pike's Peak. This humbug has finally exploded. The effect of the explosion is being fully realized by the unfortunate men who were induced to emigrate through the representations of the sharpers in the border towns of the West. Everything that would tend to inflame the minds of our young men was paraded in glowing colors—until, waking or sleeping, they could only revel in vision of gold, and fortunes the result of a few day' digging. The consequence was, thousand; who could barely raise money sufficient to take them to the mines, without a moment's reflection, put off for this imaginary Eldorado. A perfect stampede—exceeding any ever witnessed among the horses of our Western prairies—was created, and thousands upon thousands, in wagons, on horses, in steamboats, on foot, by every possible mode of conveyance, rushed with great eagerness to the anticipated gold regions. Dispatches from St. Louis and Leavenworth announce the grand <finale> of this infatuation. Great numbers of the emigrants are returning— many in a state of starvation. Fifty miles west of Leavenworth, a large body of men are reported to be in a starving condition.— Twenty thousand of the unfortunates are said to be on their way from Cherry Valley to the States. Sufferings, consequent upon a state of destitution, have made them perfect desperadoes, and it is likely they will as completely destroy everything they come across, and their approach be as much dreaded by the citizens of Kansas, Nebraska, and Western Missouri, as were the coming of locusts in Egypt. Large numbers of residents at the mouth of the Platte River are packing up and leaving in advance of the expeeted storm. Threats of burning Omaha, Leavenworth, St Joseph, and several other Western towns, are freely made by the disappointed miners, who attribute all of their misfortunes and sufferings to the mistatements [sic] of specula- tors in those cities. An army of 20,000 half starved men, eager for revenge on the authors of their misfortunes, may well be dreaded, and we are not surprised that great consternation exists amongst the inhabitants of those cities. It cannot be denied that ther did their utmost to stimulate emigration—studiously circulating the flattering, and concealing the darker, shades of the
pictures—and we are not surprised to learn law in relation lo YirftOf. that a cry for vengeance is goiug iu advance kULB 5. Any Btockholder, or rahaerihrr, of the returning BflBt. of the Pike's Peak gold diggings, as they do in the discussion of the nigger question, many, who may now leave their bones to bleach on the western prairies, might still be at home among their friends. The unfortunate termination of this emi- gration teaches another important fact. Our people are becoming too progressive. The old and sure road to wealth is being eniire- [sic] ly abandoned by American youth, who are pursuing every butterfly that chances to catch their attention, let it lead them where it may. Our wives and daughters must dress beyond the resources of ordinary labor, and hence the eagerness with which we grasp at anything promising speedy wealth. For this reason young men beginning business plunge into debt without counting the cost, and oftentimes regardless of the consequences. Our farmers' boys are too fast to patiently wait for the harvest, and rush into the city to fall into some channel promising quicker wealth. Our mechanics are unwilling to earn a competence, by laving up a penny at a time, and put our, without thought or care, for the first gold mines of which they hear any account, however fabulous that account may be. A feverish, restless anxiety to become rich in a day is pervading all classes. A spirit of recklessness invariably fosters a spirit of extravagance, and thus we are hurried on. The end is easily seen. Unless there is some change on the part of our American born youth, in this particular the wealth of the country will soon be in the hands of the few who have been differently trained in other lands—in the hands of those who are taught that wealth is acquired, not so much by making a great deal as by continually saving and laying up a little. ----- E. L. A. Since the last report (February) of the President of the Library Association, the officers and Board of Directors have continued to labor assiduously to relieve the institution of all indebtedness, and to pro- mote its interests in a general way. Their efforts have been crowned with success. A new interest has been awakened in favor of the enterprise; new stockholders have been added to the list, and the majority of the old ones—having the welfare of the enterprise at heart—pay promptly their installments on their stock, and the contribution as soon as called upon. A new accession has has been made to the books, which now altogether number upwards of two thousand volumes of choice books, and additional shelving and cases have been ordered, to receive them. Altogether the affairs of the library are, at least, quite as prosperous as at any time since its founding. In a city like Evansville, it is with the greatest difficulty, and only by the mot careful management, that an institution of this kind can be sustained by its own resources; hence it is very important that all subscriptions and installments on stock should be paid promptly. Every delinquency only serves to embarrass and obstruct the Directors in their work For a while past, some of the penal laws of the Association have not been enforced.
